Welcome to the 2014 May Day Fair which has been organised by the Church of England Parish of Christ Church Southgate, with support from other local organisations. The fair is Southgate’s largest one day community fundraising event and offers a fun day out for all ages.
This is our 36th Fair and we are grateful to all those who have worked so tirelessly to make it happen. Thank you to all the local businesses that have supported the Fair through sponsorship and advertising and by donating goods for sale. I would also like to thank Enfield Council who have arranged for part of The Green to be closed to traffic for the duration of the Fair.
As ever, there is an enormous range of stalls and activities to interest and entertain all ages. Proceeds from the Fair will benefit charity. Our main beneficiary this year is The Royal British Legion, Greater London District. Smaller sums will be donated to Christ Church Southgate as well as other charities that have helped us to organise the event.
Our volunteers have delivered thousands of raffle tickets to nearby homes in the weeks leading up to the fair – but some tickets remain and these can be purchased from the foyer of Church House in the Parish Centre. I will be drawing the raffle at the end of the fair, just before 4pm.
Please take some time to visit our beautiful church, which was designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott and boasts some of the finest Pre-Raphaelite stained glass windows in London. There is even a “self portrait” of William Morris in one of them! Tickets for tower-tours can be obtained from inside the church.
Our renowned choir will be singing at a service of Choral Evensong at 3pm, to which all are invited. Music is an important part of Christ Church. We are delighted that David Burrowes MP and the Deputy Mayor of Enfield, Councillor Ingrid Cranfield, will be with us today. But most of all, we are glad to welcome you to our Church and Parish Centre on this special day. We hope you enjoy the Fair.

May Day has long been associated with spring festivals and coincides with the ancient Celtic celebration of Beltane (the name deriving from Belenus, god of light). May 1st is also the feast of St. Walburga, an 18th century English nun who lived and worked as a missionary in Germany. It is exactly six months before Halloween, the pagan night before another Christian holy day, All Saint’s Day.
In medieval times, May Day was often celebrated by young men and women dancing on the village green around a specially-decorated tree called a maypole. The branches of a slender tree were cut off, coloured ribbons tied to the top and the revellers held on to the ends of the ribbons and danced. Before the dancing began there was also a procession led by a young woman appointed May Queen. Sometimes she was accompanied by a May King, who dressed in green to symbolise springtime and fertility. A similar festival
existed in ancient Rome called Floralia, which were dedicated to the Flower Goddess Flora, offerings were made the goddess Maia, after which the month of May is named. May Day had a boost in popularity in the 19th century when the Victorians seized on it as a “rustic delight”. But many of the significant pagan aspects of the day were ignored by our strait-laced ancestors and instead of a fertility rite, dancing around the maypole became a children’s game. For traditionalists other things to do on May Day include getting up before dawn and going outside to wash your face in dew - according to folklore this keeps the complexion beautiful. The Procession of our May Queen will start at Church House at 1.50pm with her Crowning by the Deputy Mayor of Enfield in the Arena at 2.00pm. Maypole Dancing will be at 2.45pm in the Arena.

Christ Church runs a traditional Sunday school for children from 3 years up to School Year 6. It takes place every Sunday during term time and is led by the Youth Worker and with volunteer help from parents and clergy of the church. We offer learning in a practical way with a programme that includes themes from the Old and New Testament, introducing each child to the teachings of Jesus and providing creative activities to support their learning.
We also prepare the children for the Church Service, including prayers and saying the Peace together. We then move from The Walker Hall to Church to receive a blessing. For special religious celebrations, the children stay for the whole service in Church.
Youth GroupThe Youth Group is for young people between the ages 10 and 16. We hope that those who attended Sunday School will join this weeknight group, and that it will allow them to have fun while they continue to explore their faith, discuss current affairs that affect their everyday lives and increase social awareness in a fun and safe environment. We offer a range of activities from Arts and Crafts to films and outdoor games. Youth Group is led by the Youth worker with the help of one or two assistants on a Thursday night between 6:45pm and 8:00pm. If you would like more information about the Sunday School or Youth Group please contact the Parish Office [email protected] 8886 0384

Acorn is an Amateur Dramatic Society based in North London Acorn Theatre Company was set up in 1989 by a group of people who already had a lot of experience in production, choreography, acting and working backstage. This had all been gained from being involved with a number of other groups for many years. The difference was that Acorn's twin aims were to put on pan-tomimes and musical shows, donating the money raised by these to local charities. A wide selection of musicals have been produced in the summer months and we always put on a pantomime towards the end of the Christmas holidays.

Christ Church, Southgate, has a fine peal of ten bells, and during the May Day Fair the ringers welcome visitors to the belfry for tours of the tower. Tickets can be obtained from inside the church. We are keen to hear from anyone interested in finding out more about English full circle tower bell ringing, which has evolved during the last few hundred years and which can give a lifetime of fascination and satisfaction to those who do it.
Anyone who wishes to know more about ringing is welcome to contact the Tower Captain, Martin Sutcliffe. (Tel. 020 8368 1974)

Visit our BBQ run by The Hatters Explorer Scout UnitChrist Church has supported The Hatters Explorer Scout Unit over the past few years with their on going aid project for the San Bush people of Northern Namibia. The San people originally occupied all Northern Namibia up into Angola and across to Botswana and the Kalahari. They have been consistently marginalised and persecuted as a people and more recently, with the creation of National Parks and the demand for farm land, forced into an area of low value with no opportunity for employment or income. The Hatters project has involved the clearance of scrub and fencing to create an orange tree plantation as the first help the community has received to create a local economy. They have installed a diesel pump on a bore hole, irrigated and fertilised an area of the cleared land and planted the first 200 trees. The unit will return in 2014 to increase the area irrigated and plant a further 300 trees. At the same time they hope to initialise a secondary project along the same lines. The Hatters Explorer Scout Unit are supporting the Christ Church Southgate May Day Fair by staffing the Barbecue and will receive some of the proceeds raised today from the Barbecue sales

BRAIN TUMOUR - "THE ORPHAN CANCER"
Brain tumours affect children and adults alike, but research worldwide is under-funded and there is a great need for a better understanding of what causes them, how the brain re-acts to them and how they behave - and an even greater need for better and more effective treatments. In spite of the annual 2% increase in diagnoses, little is known about their cause or effective treatment.
BTRC aims to raise public awareness of the urgent need for brain tumour re-search; to lead a fundraising campaign to support research into and treat-ment of brain tumours and to assist the emergence of the UK's first multi-disciplinary Brain Tumour Research Centre of Excellence, based at Charing Cross Hospital in London. The first steps in this plan were the launch of the John Fulcher Molecular Neuro-oncology Laboratory in 2009, led by a post-doctoral Fellow, which is already yielding interesting results

The Church of England Parish of Christ Church welcomes you….. Welcome to Christ Church’s 2013 May Fair
This is the 35th May Fair that the Church of England Parish of Christ Church, on The Green at Southgate, has organised. I would particularly like to thank all the members of our parish community who have worked so tirelessly to make this a successful and enjoyable day. I would also like to thank the local businesses that have supported the Fair and this programme. You will find an enormous range of stalls and activities to interest and entertain you. The road across The Green is closed, as it has been for the fair for the last five years. This allows us to expand what the fair has to offer and it also makes the fair safer for those visiting. Proceeds from the day will benefit Teenage Cancer Trust , Christ Church Southgate and a number of other charities As well as visiting the Fair, do take some time to visit our beautiful Church which was designed by the famous architect, Sir George Gilbert Scott. Apart from being a beautiful space where it is easy to be still and reflective, it has wonderful pre-Raphaelite stained glass. You will also find exhibitions and the opportunity to climb the bell tower (but go early, as only limited numbers can enter at a time). Please also, try to join us for Choral Evensong at 3pm – we envisage this will last about 40 minutes and includes some beautiful music sung by the choir and enjoyable hymns for us all to sing. We are delighted that Andy Abraham on behalf of the Teenage Cancer Trust, David Burrowes MP, and the Mayor of Enfield, Councillor Kate Anolue, will be with us today. But most of all, we are glad that you are with us for this special day and hope that you enjoy it very much. Yours sincerely,
The Reverend Peter Jackson Vicar of Christ Church, Southgate
