Itrsquos Your Choicersquo apprenticeships project

lsquoItrsquos Your Choicersquo apprenticeships project Chwarae Teg with partners in the Sector Skills Councils has been working on acampaign to promote the value of non-traditional apprenticeships to teenage girlsliving in Wales Why Because Apprenticeships and vocational training are currently the mostgender-segregated areas of the Welsh education system This not simply areflection of the occupational segregation that occurs throughout the economyeven in sectors where women are under-represented the proportion of femaleapprentices can be ten times lower than the proportion of women working in thesector as a whole Where females do enrol onto apprenticeships over half offemale apprentices are clustered into only five of the 156 frameworks available There is also a gender pay gap in apprenticeships of 26 with most of the female-dominated apprenticeship frameworks attracting significantly lower rates of paythan those traditionally chosen by males (Source TUC report lsquo(Still More) BetterPaid Jobs for the Boysrsquo) What have we done

lsquoItrsquos Your Choicersquo is an apprenticeships e-booklet - a bi-lingual digital resourcefeaturing case studies of young Welsh women who have successfully undertakenapprenticeships in non-traditional areas The booklet is designed to specificallyappeal to young women (primarily aged 13-16) at a time when they are beginningto think about the options open to them We aim to promote the benefits ofapprenticeships provide information on the wide variety of apprenticeship

Driving up Skills with the CWU

Driving up Skills The Skills Academy Wales through LRC Training are currently delivering DGV(Delivery Goods Vehicle) Apprenticeships at Royal Mail Enterprise Park SwanseaThe Apprenticeship consists of an NVQ in DGV plus Essential Skills in Maths andEnglish Once these have been completed the Apprentices are given theopportunity to upgrade their HGV licence to the level above their current licence It was evident from the start that some members didnrsquot want to undertake orenvisaged having difficulties with the ESW part of the Apprenticeship but once theywere introduced to Amanda the tutor who was very supportive and they started to

complete the work they sailed through it One member arrived on a Mondaymorning stating that he wouldnrsquot be staying long as he thought the work would betoo arduous ended up staying all day and almost completing the ESW in 9 hoursHe was so engaged with the work that he decided to just have a Kit-Kat and coffeefor lunch to enable him to get on without too much interruption In fact he alsobought Amanda a Kit Kat and coffee for persevering with him This pilot course is going very well and we are now looking to offer this opportunity in the first

instance to the outlying Delivery Offices of South West Wales Amal Branch and later to otherCWU Branches within Wales

James Park Lead ULR said ldquoThis is a great opportunity for our members to gain a recognisedtransferrable qualification They not only have the chance to upgrade their driving licence but also

to update their skills in Maths and Englishrdquo
