Flowers begin to pop up through the warm soil, nurseries are full of weekend gardeners looking for the perfect vegetable to plant in their gardens, and homes get that annual deep spring cleaning. It is a time to begin putting away those winter jackets and bring out the bright colors and lighter clothing that will take us into the summer months. This magical time of the year is not lost on the residents of Silverado. They enjoy getting back out into the sunshine and digging in the soil as we prepare to put in our vegetable gardens. It is not unusual to see them sitting in the sun, eyes closed and a contented smile on their face. For this fragile population who are often very cold, the sun must feel wonderful. Outside activities are part of our ongoing engagement programs at Silverado. Watering plants by keeping watering cans handy allows our residents to enjoy opportunities to give a plant a good soaking whenever they want. Raised garden boxes allow those who are in a wheelchair or have standing endurance challenges, to participate in planting and caring for herbs and flowers. Once vegetables have matured, residents have the reward of picking the beautiful things they have nurtured. The fresh produce is then taken to one of the Kitchen Bistros where activity staff will assist with wonderful and healthy recipes for everyone. There is nothing like a freshly picked warm tomato, a snappy green bean or a spicy red radish. Since the weather is neither too hot nor too cold, it is also a great time to have lunch outside. One of our Associates will be more than happy to serve our families and residents in an area of their choice. Our residents enjoy being able to choose when they want to go outdoors. Having courtyards that are always accessible to them supports our philosophy of showing people dignity and respect. Nothing can replace the joys of and benefits of natural sunlight. Once they have had their day in the sun they may want to come indoors and do a little spring cleaning of their own. We encourage our residents to continue doing some of the things that they did at home as it gives them sense of purpose and a feeling of accomplishment. A dust rag is always available along with an Associate who will love spending time with them talking about what hard work it is to do all that Spring cleaning. There’s something energizing about the spring season.

Once vegetables have matured, residents have the reward of picking the

beautiful things they have nurtured.

Nothing can replace the joys of and benefits of natural

sunlight.

Starting soon, pools which have been collecting leaves or been neglected in the chilly winter months will soon become the ultimate watering hole and a bustling center of energy, life and fun. At Silverado Senior Living- Calabasas, their annual pool day events bring families, children, associates, caregivers and residents together to enjoy the summer sun.

Starting in mid-May, Yasmeena King, Director of Resident Engagement, will do her best to get everyone involved. Since water aerobics can replace many range of motion exercises which take place at the community weekly, their pool theme is “sporty fun.” On the patio, all typical pool items can be found near by from beach balls and sun screen to brightly colored towels and floating tubes. Yasmeena comments, “The fun thing about this activity is that all of our resident’s spend most of their time outside by the pool swimming and engaging with caregiver’s, their families, and kids. We really aim for family fun and we believe including and involving kids creates a huge positive response from our residents.” During these months caregivers get involved by training in water safety classes and a certified lifeguard is hired for additional safety.

Juicy summer melons, pineapples and strawberries are enjoyed by all. Resident’s who are less aquatic are welcome to enjoy their lunches outside by the pool area. Yasmeena says,

“For our residents who prefer not to swim, inviting them to the patio allows them the opportunity to enjoy the day and see all the action. It’s great visual stimulation and they might even change their mind when they see all the fun.” Whether in or out doors Silverado Senior Living’s creative engagement programs mean living life to its fullest.

The ease of ordering products and gifts online with a few clicks of your mouse has made many businesses like Borders and Blockbuster reconsider how they do business. Since the online shopping craze has swept the globe many of us have become exclusive online shoppers. When purchasing certain products, sometimes it’s simply more convenient to have something shipped. A new feature included in Silverado’s website redesign was an Online Store.

Available at the online store are gifts for Him (slippers, robes, and picture frames) and gifts for Her (cozy blankets, flowers, and balloon bouquets). For special occasions, anniversaries, or just a gift to remind someone that you care can be easily purchased and shipped directly to your loved one. For more simplicity, three package options can also be purchased: a Birthday/Anniversary Package, the Quality of LIFE package, and the Respite Package. Unique to Silverado’s online store is the ability to book time with a geriatric care manager in person or over the phone or even schedule a personal attendant to be with your loved one on a special day. Bringing convenience to care makes it easier than ever to show your love to those you love.

Leave it to a French poet to beautifully summarize the meaning of music. Victor Hugo says, “Music expresses that which cannot be put into words and cannot remain silent.” An unfortunate symptom for many with Alzheimer’s and dementia is loosing the ability to verbally communicate. However, human beings are uniquely programmed and for some reason music seems to be one of those magical tools which seem to break through the communication boundaries and can touch the human spirit. While all Silverado Senior Living communities incorporate music into their engagement programs Silverado- Escondido has created a summer concert series for not only their resident’s enjoyment but the surrounding community as well.

Starting in April through September music will bring people of all ages together. The concerts are free to the public and Pat Thompson, Director of Resident Engagement, says “People from the neighboring areas will often call and ask if they may attend and the answer is always yes!” Music calms the soul and lifts spirits. Taking a respite from the everyday rushing and worrying is good for everyone. The following are the dates and bands playing at the community: April 22 - The Caravan Band, May 20 - The Sundance Band, June 16 - Revelation Band, July 21 - The Billy Harper Band, August 25 - Swingtet, September 22 - Rikacha Band. Come share an evening of music with our caregivers, residents and families!
