by Mr. P's Bistro of Southport andincluded beef tenderloin, baconwrapped scallops, crab cakes, BeefWellington andshrimp andgrits, alongwith otherdelights.
An ice carvingfive feet talland five feetlong highlight-ed a low coun-try food themefor cold seafood offeringsof crab claws, shrimp
cocktails, ands m o k e dsalmon. A sec-ond ice carv-ing, five feetaround and twotiered, displayed a
variety of deli-cious desserts.
Arriving guests were
greeted with valet parking and awalk on the red carpet as they weregreeted by Gala committee mem-
bers. Rovingwaiters served achoice of winesor cocktails tostart theevening. Tableswere decoratedwith 24" tall sil-ver vases filledwith sprays ofwhite orchids,star of
Bethlehem, fern fronds,and low countrygrasses.

The Oak Island BeachPreservation Society has pur-chased and placed Be a BeachLover signs along the beachaccesses to help promote aware-ness of beach preservation andto aid in eliminating safety haz-ards on our beaches.Refrigerator magnets replicat-ing the signs have been distrib-uted for placement in beachrental properties. The Be aBeach Lover initiative's pur-pose is to encourage beachusers to participate in keepingour dunes intact; to make surethat beach equipment will notimpede sea turtles that comeashore to nest; and also tomake the beach a safe place forall.
The OKI Beach PreservationSociety has many ongoing proj-ects that require expenditures.An annual wine tasting fundraiser is held each April to off-set project costs.
The most recent event washeld on April 16 at Island WayRestaurant; this was the 12thsuch event. The Societydepends on local businessesand the generosity of support-ers to make this event a suc-cess. Local restaurants donate
food for the event. Attendeesenjoyed a beautiful view, won-derful wines, great food andinteresting auction items.Businesses and many privatecitizens donated many items fora silent auction.
Strong community participa-tion resulted in a great success.This year, with ticket sales andsilent auction profits, approxi-mately $8,000 was raised.
This event also includes a veryimportant award. The OKIBeach Preservation Societyrecognizes that there are many,many people in our communitywho go above and beyond tohelp preserve our unique envi-ronment. Each year the honorof Beach Preservationist of theYear is awarded to such a per-son. We were proud to recog-nize Mary Ellen Rogers as our2011 Beach Preservationist ofthe Year. She is the founder ofSea Biscuit Wildlife Rescue,which cares for injured ororphaned birds. Many ofwhich make their home in ornear the ocean. The OKIBeach Preservation Societydonated 10% of this year's auc-tion earnings to the Sea BiscuitWildlife Shelter.

On May 19th the Southport-OakIsland Area Chamber of Commerceand the City of Southport willembark on an exciting new eventcalled "Shop to the Beat". "Shop tothe Beat" starts with entertainmentand unites the natural combinationof shopping and dining. The bi-monthly event will take advantage ofthe traditional downtown environ-ment in Southport positioningmusic or entertainment throughoutthe business district outside andnear participating merchants.Participating merchants and restau-rants will add to the evening by hav-ing specials or merchandising gamesduring "Shop to the Beat".
"Shop to the Beat" will be held inSouthport from 4pm-6pm the firstand third Thursday of every monthbeginning May 19th and endingNovember 17th.
The Southport-Oak Island AreaChamber of Commerce is solicitingindividuals, banks, churches, realestate firms and other non-retailbusinesses to identify and provideentertainment during the 13 eventsnights. In exchange for providingthe entertainment, businesses havethe opportunity to distribute busi-ness cards.
The Chamber is looking for bothtraditional and non-traditionalentertainers such as single instru-mentals (i.e. guitars, accordions,trumpets, flutes, keyboard) vocalgroups, hand bells, magicians, andpuppet shows.

The Special Olympics Cheerleadingteam, The Brunswick Shakers, took homethe silver medal in a recent cheerleadingtournament. The SONC CheerleadingTournament was held on March 12, 2011at Butler High School in Charlotte , NC .The girls were ledby Head Coach,Cindy Neely withthe help of twoassistant coaches,Lindsey Smith andDevan McLachlenand competedagainst a total ofeight teams. Gore Center. Brunswick County Parks andRecreation sponsored the team's travel andcompetition expenses. This is a great pro-gram and partnership between organiza-tions to provide opportunities to SpecialOlympics athletes throughout Brunswick

Each winter a group of strangerscome together in a class of novice gar-deners hoping to become MasterGardeners. Anew dimen-sion has beenadded to thisyear's class, oneof outreachinto the com-munity. Thisyear's class voted to work on the "SecretGarden" at Ocean Trail convalescentCenter in Southport.
The purpose of the project will be toenhance the Ocean Trail facility andcreate awareness of Extension's partner-ship with the greater BrunswickCommunity. Some residents whoreside in Ocean Trail are not ambulato-ry and therefore spend most of the dayin their suites looking out onto the"secret garden". Currently it is not
inviting. It would be a benefit to theresidents as well as staff if this areacould be used for relaxation and renew-
al. Ocean TrailConvalescent Centeroffers opportunities toenhance the quality oflife for its residents andthe Master Gardenerclass would like toextend this out into the
"secret garden". The project proposalincludes clearing the existing area,planting shrubs, perennials and annu-als that thrive in our climate. The classmembers hope to improve the land-
scape to provide visual interest yearround.

Communities In Schools (CIS) ofBrunswick County, Inc. has beenserving the county for the past 16years by providing services to helpchildren succeed in school and in lifeand to help families become moreself sufficient. On February 25th,Communities In Schools Nationalreleased the results of a five-year inde-pendent evaluation of our organiza-tion, conducted by ICFInternational. It concluded that theCIS model resulted in the strongestreduction in dropout rates of anyexisting fully-scaled dropout preven-tion program that has been evaluat-
ed; and that CIS is unique in havingan effect on both reducing dropoutrates and increasing graduation rates.Also, according to an EconomicImpact Study done by UNCW forCIS of Brunswick County, spendingmoney on services for children andfamilies is one of the best investmentsa community can make.Communities In Schools ofBrunswick County, Inc. believeskeeping children in school is aninvestment in their future and ourcommunity.
CIS served over 12,000 childrenand families county-wide last year.We provide over 1,900 volunteers inBrunswick County schools and tosupport our programs - 8 AfterSchool Programs, Teen & PeerCourts, Dropout Prevention/
Success Coaches, Scholarships,Family Resource Centers in Lelandand Waccamaw and ParentingEducation classes. The money to sup-port these programs is raised throughfundraisers like this 50/50 raffle.

Following Thompson's remarks,guests enjoyed a brief six minutevideo reflecting on the uniquequality of advanced health care pro-vided at Dosher Hospital. Since itsfounding on June 2, 1930, it nowprovides personalized care twenty
four hours a day, seven days a week;treats more than15,000 emergencypatients annually; and is in the topsix small community hospitals inNorth Carolina recognized for"Excellence in General Surgery".The video further noted the verylow infection rate documented atDosher.
Lastly the Departments of GeneralSurgery, Diagnostic Imaging,
Physical and Occupational Therapyand Cardiac Rehab are key servicesthat distinguish Dosher from otherfacilities.
Following Mr. Thompson'sremarks and the video, TheAndrew Thieland Big Band playedthroughout the evening as theguests continued to enjoy the ambi-ence of the evening.

Brunswick County 4-H held their Annual 4-H Achievement Banquet on February 21 at theExtension Office. Approximately 80 4-H
members, par-ents, volun-teers, andE x t e n s i o nstaff were inattendance toc e l e b r a t eaccomplish -
ments the youth have made during 2010. Thisyear the 4-H'ers were honored as the shiningstars in 4-H. The room sparkled with twinklinglights and a donated, custom-made starlight"chandelier" hung in the middle of the room.
The groupenjoyed entertain-ment by "stars inthe making",Sammi Lawrenceand Kenan Bridgeswho sang "A WholeNew World" from "Alladin". Also, the 4-
H'ers danced to DJ Fray's "dj" skills..
In the "celestial" body of Brunswick Countystars, there were some special "stars" that werehonored fortheir achieve-ments with acer t i f i ca te ,"clover dol-lars" and astar trophy.Recipients of the Outstanding 4-Her of theYear Award were: 9-10 year old, Lydia Lewis;11-12 year old, a tie with Alexis Apple andAmber Yurgel; 13-15 year old, SamanthaLawrence; and 16-19 year old, Elizabeth Mintz.

It is that time of the year whenboth children and adults are nowoutside enjoying this warmer weath-er. Whether it is day-light, nighttime orduring dampweather condi-tions, it is essentialto remember toalways use safetyprecautions whileriding bicycles.
Always check yourequipment beforeriding, a flat tire or brake problemscan leave you stranded on the sideof the road. Wear your helmet andother equipment such as knee orelbow pads, to provide additionalprotection. Be alert and look forpotholes, objects in the road, bro-ken glass or other dangers thatcould cause hazards.
Wear bright colored clothingwhile riding your bicycle and placereflectors on the bicycle itself to
make sure peopleon the road seeyou. Don't attemptany fancy trickswhile riding, keepyour hands on thehandlebars at alltimes. This is aneasy way for you toloose balance and
get yourself hurt. Usedesignated bike routes wheneveravailable, if not, be sure to followtraffic flow and obey all traffic laws.
Hand signals are vital when ridingbicycles and riders of all ages shouldbe familiar with them. Yield to traf-fic when appropriate and remem-ber, just because you can see a driv-er does not necessarily mean thatthe driver sees you.

Donna Watts has beenemployed with the BrunswickCounty Sheriff's Office sinceOctober 20, 2010.Officer Watts startedwith the Sheriff'soffice as aDetention Officerin our DetentionFacility. She isalso duly sworn asa Deputy with theSheriff's Office. Priorto Officer Watts workingwith the Sheriff's Office, sheworked with the BrunswickCounty Health Department for10 years. She was also in the AirForce from 1991- 1995. Her long
term goal with the Sheriff'sOffice is to work with the Special
Crimes Unit as a Detective.We are very proud to
have her as anemployee at theSheriff's Office.She has alwaysprovided profes-sional services tothe citizens of
Brunswick County.Officer Watts has a
beautiful daughter andher name is Danielle. We
appreciate all of her hard workand dedication to the BrunswickCounty Sheriff's Office.
After Brunswick County wasapproved in January of 2011 for a newpublic safety radio sys-tem, the first stepshave now begun.
Equipment for thenew VIPER system iscurrently beinginstalled in theBrunswick CountySheriff's Office patrolvehicles. The console installments willtake several weeks to be installed prop-
erly into all of the vehicles. The goal isfor the Sheriff's Office to be running
on the new VIPER sys-tem by Memorial Dayweekend.
The Sheriff's Officelooks forward toworking on the newstate-run communica-tions system and pro-viding the county's cit-
izens with the best professional andproficient services available.
