Did You KnowWe now have 5 practitioners at North Valley Health Center to care for your needs. They are: Michelle Woinarowicz NP, Jeremy Houser PA, Karrah Oliver PA, Jill Smith NP, and Dr. Frank LeBlanc. Having five practitioners gives our patients the ability to have a choice in their selection of who they want to be treated by. These are all outstanding practitioners and they all have ties to the region and our service area. This is very uncommon for medicine in rural America. On occasion, we still rely on locum practitioners but that is getting less and less as we increase our staffing.

I would also like to list the majority of our services being provided at North Valley Health Center that perhaps most aren’t aware of. Sometimes when I’m talking with members of the community about the services being provided I often get the response “I didn’t realize we can have that done here in Warren?” So the following list are the highlights of services provided

locally. If you ever have questions as to whether or not we have services that you need please feel free to call us and if we don’t have those services we would assist you in finding those services in the area.

I would also like to update you on the progress of the gifting of the Good Samaritan nursing home and senior apartments to the city of Warren. We’ve been working diligently on getting the licensing and credentialing in place for the change of ownership to happen by December 1 of this year. It takes a considerable amount of time and effort to be able to facilitate the change of ownership so that we can continue providing services without disruption. The gift of the nursing home and senior apartments to the community is an incredible gift seeing that we are receiving this gift without debt. North Valley Health Center will manage the long-term care and WEDA will oversee the assisted living and senior apartments. The new name for the facility will be the North Star Manor, to go along with the name of the assisted living called the North Star Assisted Living. What a wonderful medical campus we now have.Again, I would like to thank everyone for what you do to make healthcare accessible and available in the Warren, Oslo, Alvarado, Argyle, Stephen, Angus, Radium, Viking, and surrounding area. Without you none of this would be possible! Sincerely, Jon Linnell

North Valley Health Center requires our patient care staff to be a jack of all trades and master of most. NVHC staff are energetic, compassionate, and dedicated to the patients and to the staff members who care for the patients. Recently, our medical staff and nursing staff participated in Comprehensive Advanced Life Support (CALS) program together to build their critical care skills. The Comprehensive Advanced Life Support (CALS) Program is an educational program designed specifically for providers in rural communities. The course teaches you how to assess a patient’s condition, resuscitate and stabilize him or her, and determine if his or her needs exceed a facility’s capacity. It also covers how to arrange for a patient’s hospital transfer and assure that optimum care is provided throughout the process. The CALS (Comprehensive Advanced Life Support) Program was founded in 1993 in response to rural health care. The goal was to develop one course that would educate rural providers in all

areas of emergency care while also training the entire medical team, including physicians and nurses. North Valley Health Center has been participating in this course for the past 5 years. The course has been very well received by staff and brings a great knowledge to our team. Sincerely, Sara Kazmierczak

North Valley Health Center held their 20th annual “Fund Driving” on the Range Golf Tournament at the Stephen Riverside Golf Course in Stephen, Minnesota on June 8, 2017. It was a beautiful day and 113 golfers turned out for the event. With the overwhelming response of donors the tournament raised $32,000.

Each year the proceeds from the golf tournament are used for a specifi c project or projects. Your provided support, along with the success of the tournament, has allowed us to put funds toward a Wound Camera, Physical Therapy Treatment Table, a Patient Lift, Ambulance Replacement Fund and an Area EMS Education Fund (which would help support our service area fi rst responders/EMS). Funds will also benefi t Lifeline (a personal response service that summons quick assistance for those at home of any age with medical or physical problems). Any donated funds in excess of the stated projects will be used towards additional equipment needs of NVHC.

$2,000 Raffl e Ticket winner was Nicole Schuler. $1,000 Raffl e Ticket winner was Joe Bienek. $500 Raffl e Ticket winners were Adalynn/Jeremy Linnell and Kim Kostrzewski. $250 Raffl e Ticket winners were David Peyton/Lisa Johnson/Laurie Martine and Jiralyn Miller.

DID YOU KNOW THESE FACTS ABOUT BREAST CANCER?

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Can Physical activity reduce the risk of breast cancer? Exercise boosts the immune system and helps you to keep your weight in check. With as little as three hours of exercise per week, or about 30 minutes a day, a woman can begin to lower her risk of breast cancer. This doesn‛t require going to a gym either. Power walking is more than suffi cient!

What kind of impact does stress have on breast cancer? In 2012, some research studies have shown that factors such as traumatic events and losses can alter immune system functions, and when immune functions are altered cancer cells may have an opportunity to get themselves established within one‛s body. What has been shown is that it is not the fact that a major life crisis has occurred but instead how the individual reacted to this event and coped (or didn‛t cope). Therefore, identifying ways to keep your stress level in check is wise.

Can drinking alcohol increase the risk of breast cancer? Moderation is key. One drink per day has been shown to slightly increase the risk of breast cancer. Having more than one drink per day has shown to be a more signifi cant risk factor, and the alcohol content doesn‛t matter: wine, beer or a mixed drink. Alcohol also increases estrogen in your bloodstream. Although we know that more than one drink per day increases risks, to date there are no studies that demonstrate directly that the more a person drinks, the greater their risk for cancer. And in some cases, drinking one glass of wine a day can offer heart-health benefi t. If you drink alcohol, this is an important topic to discuss with your doctor so that you will know what limits are best for you to observe.

Can a healthy diet help prevent breast cancer? A nutritious, low-fat diet (30 grams or less) with plenty of fruits and green and orange vegetables can help reduce the risk of developing breast cancer. A high-fat diet increases the risk because fat triggers estrogen production that can fuel tumor growth.

In the last three years we have done 653 mammograms for our patients. The DMS mammography truck comes to our facility bi-weekly and offers the most advanced digital mammography and state of the art equipment.

Here at NVHC we offer: • Digital x-ray (24 hours/day) • CT (24 hours/day) • Ultrasound • EKG‛s (24 hours/day) • Holter Monitors (24 hours/day) • Zio patch/zio event card (24 hours/day) DMS Mobile Imaging provides us with top of the line mobile services at NVHC. These services include: • Digital mammography (every other Wednesday) • MRI (every Thursday) • Echocardiogram (every Thursday) • DEXA scan (every 4th Tuesday) • Stress tests (every other Wednesday) • Pain Management (once per month), in conjunction with Dr. Parikh from Altru) • Nuclear Medicine (as needed)

Radiology exams are routed electronically and read by a licensed radiologist from Consulting Radiologists Ltd. With collaboration and quality care at the forefront, radiologists and providers work together to ensure that the appropriate tests are performed and that positive fi ndings are relayed via telephone.

Marcy was involved in many aspects of our facility; she was an ER nurse, a surgery nurse, an OB nurse, she worked with the ambulance service and at the end of her career she was leading the materials management department and in charge of ordering supplies. She truly loved her work as an RN at North Valley Health Center and considered the staff at the hospital her second family. Marcy especially enjoyed volunteering at the annual NVHC Golf Fundraiser.
