Commodore’s Comments for May Newsletter 2015

Where did the year go? I was having so much fun, it just slipped by. Hope it was that way for the rest of you. The meetings and events that were just words on the pages of a calendar have come alive, been enjoyed and now rest in our memories. Some reflect in photos and some have culminated in treasured trophies. But they were assuredly played out by a fine bunch of unique individuals that make-up this colorful sailing club. But, lo and behold, this is just the first of May and we still have another month to enjoy!

The Officer’s Induction Meeting is coming up on Saturday, May 16th at Sims’ Beach. And I must admit, I amas surprised as the new officers are themselves. It is always a big mystery as to who is going to be filling thosepositions. We have so much talent in this group it‘s most important that we have an all knowing napkin ever-ready to narrow down the elusive victims or should I say champions. This year we are honored by the followingcapable and reluctantly ready officers: Commodore - Herb Moore; Vice Commodore - Ken Renfro, Secretary -Art Twitchell; Treasurer - Jan Cole. I’m sure the torch will burn brightly being passed on to these new champions.

How about that Lake Weir Invitational and 11th Annual Harpoon Nationals Regatta? Wasn’t that the greatest! It was good to be back at the Kiwanis Club especially with the remodeled interior, a reasonable price and theirpouring of more water into the lake. They provided such fine wind that we decided to book them in advance for next year. How could we go wrong. Thanks Charlene Johnson for taking care of that.

Speaking of the regatta and events becoming memories, be sure to check out all of the photos that have beentaken of this event, You can see them on the Websites of The Ocala Star Banner (www.ocala.com), TheVoiceof South Marion (Community Spotlight-April 23rd) and of course, our own website:www.ocalasailingclub.org.The excellent photography was taken by Doug Engle, Pam Guenther and Jan Schumacher, respectively. We alsohad a terrific independent photographer that has been recording many of the intra - lake regattas in the area, hername is Ingrid Zagers and you can find oodles of the recent OSC Regatta photographs by clicking over to face-book at: www.facebook.com/zagers.ephotography/photos. Honestly, this Regatta was blessed by great wind andwonderful professional coverage. Our “Thanks” pours out to everyone who helped make the regatta successful!

Jan Schumacher, our Webmaster, has made our website and in the tradition of our newsletter, when she was secretary,is top notch and getting better all the time. It will be the “digital hub of the club” as we continue into the future. All our reports, newsletters and critical documents are now gradually becoming resident on this site, which is a godsent. It has the general open-to-the-public side and the secure-to-members-only side which is key to it. Most of our new members in the last year have come to us through this venue. We get inquiries monthly. And having our Newsletter and photographs on there allows for a great on-line reference center.

The Rum Races are turning out to be a lot of fun. It helps build a core of active sailors among us. Many of our members are not hard core sailors. The ones that are often get involved in the intra-lack competition that goes on all around us from Jacksonville to Orlando. The Rum Races are informal, local and don’t require a lot of fuss &preparation. So no matter what kind of sailing vessel you can put into the lake, it will be easy, uncomplicated, competitively desirable and most of all fun. And the big prize, the Bottle of Rum, can be won by anyone whoparticipates. So next season, do plan to pull your old rust bucket or new fandangle out to Sim’s Beach and join us.

The cruises are for pleasure and comaraderie with a little adventure thrown in. We hope to do more in the futureas those who have turned out for them have expressed they really enjoyed jumping on the larger boats for fun.

See you at “Latino Y Mas” for our next Buccaneer Dinner on Thursday, May 7th at 6:30 PM.Your short-time Commodore,

A few other things that stand out this year looking back are: the OSC Website, the Rum Races and our Cruises.

It was a great Regatta Weekend !

We have a tradition of taking a group photo in front of the oak tree. This year we had presence of mind to break up into sailing class groups after the the first group shot. However in the jumble of activity going on, the sailors of the Multi-Hulls skipped out or else the photo got lost. But Ingridhad a photo of the Multi-Hulls while they were nicely lined up on the beach, it will just have to do .
