While five organizations are honored as finalists for the W. Curtis Strube Small Business Award and the award recipient is announced, the event also serves to recognize the impor- tant role small businesses play in the local economy. Originating in 1992, the award honors Dr. Curtis Strube, the late director of Drury University’s Breech School of Business and an avid Chamber supporter. The award is based on written applications covering company history, management philosophy, response to challenges, innovative products or services, and community-oriented con- tributions. The applications are scored by an independent panel of judges consisting of the previous year’s recipient, two business professionals selected by the Small Busi- ness Council, and two local business assistance providers. Five organizations have been named as finalists for the 2011 W. Curtis Strube Award. The finalists are: Intuitive Web Solutions, LLC, develops and markets web-based software solutions for insurance companies across the United States. With 34 employees, co-owners are Chris Reynolds and Phil Reynolds. The company was founded in 2004 as a side business for websites and e-commerce software, but by 2005 had become full-time employment for the co-owners when the first insurance quoting system was devel- oped for the first client. After marketing at insurance conventions, the company was commissioned in 2008 to develop a comprehensive insurance processing system, BriteCore. The contract allowed the company to hire additional employees and move to a larger office space. After BriteCore’s release in July 2010, sales have doubled and the company currently has 31 clients spread across 14 different states. J. providing service to Missouri State University, eventually expanding to become a fully functioning, federally-recognized transit system that serves over 1 million students each year. After locations in southeast Springfield and the University Plaza Hotel complex, the company moved into its current 20,000 square foot building on eight acres in 2000. Ozarks Food Harvest, Inc., the only food bank in southwest Missouri, serves more than 300 hunger-relief organizations across 28 counties. With 29 employees, president and CEO is Bart Brown. Founded in 1983, the food bank became an inde-pendent 501(c)3 organization in 1989 and by 1991 became an officially certified member of Feeding America, the national network of food banks. From 1997 to 2006 the organization opened its first Kids Café ™ after-school feeding site, participated in the first Hungerthon radio fundraiser, began piloting the Weekend Backpack Program™ and launched the Mobile Food Pantry™ program. After outgrowing its leased facility and securing more than $5.1 million for a new distribution center, the food bank moved into the O’Reilly Center for Hunger Relief in 2009 with an operating space of 46,000 square feet and room for 20 years of expected growth. Pension Consultants, Inc., manages and evaluates all areas of employer-spon-sored retirement plans. With 15 employees, president and founder is Brian D. Allen, CFP, QPA. The firm was founded in 1994, with an additional shareholder coming onboard in 1997. After the departure of an original business partner in 1999, the firm restruc-tured to focus on its core strengths and formalized its business model in 2000 with the introduction of its first QP Review®, a new compliance service for qualified plans. In 2005, the firm had a major turning point when it began doing vendor search and monitoring for its clients, leading to another new service being offered in 2007, the Vendor Selection Database. With con-tinuing education for its clients, the firm weathered the equity market downturn of 2008 and currently serves 60,000 retirement plan participants and has $1.6 billion in assets under management. Pinnacle Sign Group, Inc., is a full service sign manufacturing company

specializing in custom design, fabrication, installation and service. With 26 employees, owner and president is Darren Pearce. Established as Savage Sign Group in the 1870s, the company is one of Springfield’s oldest continually operating businesses, remaining in the same family until the early 1980s. Renamed as Pinnacle Sign Group in 2002, Darren and Lori Pearce purchased the company in 2008 hoping to restore the

company’s finances and reputation. Since 2008, the company has doubled its rev-enues and completely renovated its facility. At the Small Business Award Luncheon on May 4, each of the five finalists will be profiled in a special video, with one being announced as the 2011 award recipient at the conclusion. Association of Administrative Professionals

Springfield Metro Chapter of International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP) can’t emphasize enough the importance of good net-working. The organization focuses on giving its members many opportunities to strengthen their professional skills through meetings and activities. One of the benefits to joining IAAP is that they offer a formal mentoring

program geared for new administrative professionals. In the mentoring program the less-experienced are paired to learn from the experienced,” says Colleen Neill (CPS/CAP, Chartering President of SCM). The organization also encourages members to get involved in the com-munity through mentoring students and attending community events. “Our organization is all about helping our members grow and enhance their skills so that they are more valuable professionals for their companies,” says Neill. If you are interested in enhancing your skills the Springfield Metro Chapter IAAP meets every 4th Thursday of each month at 5:30 p.m. in the Kenneth E. Meyer Alumni Center at Missouri State University. To learn more visit www.iaap-springfieldmetro.org.

Here’s an interesting fact: if employees do not establish relationships outside of their work environment within 3 to 6 months they are more likely to leave. That’s what one research firm based out of Wichita, Kan., found out about the young professionals in their area. But that wasn’t all they discovered: for every young adult exported, the city lost $300,000 in investments. One person really can make a differ-ence. No matter who they are or where they live, young adults crave connection. That’s why the Chamber created a sum-mer internship program: IN.network. It’s designed to help soon-to-be graduates get off campus and out of their internship cubicles so they can form a real connec-tion with the city of Springfield. This is the second year for this program which will take place during the months of June and July, and it will offer a variety of opportunities for interns to build social and professional relationships within the community. Throughout the summer, interns will have the chance to attend professional development lun-cheons, panel discussions, and networking events with other interns and current members of The Network for Springfield’s young professionals. IN.network won’t take away from students’ already valuable internship experiences; in fact, the program is designed to build upon what’s already gained inside the workplace. Not only that, but IN.network has something to

offer local businesses as well: It’s free to participate and it’s a valuable recruiting tool to attract out-of-state interns. Three out of four young people under the age of 28 first choose a place to live and then search for a job, according to Next Generation Consulting. Springfield is full of soon-to-be graduates; let’s help them make the jump

from college to career. Businesses are encouraged to post internship openings on the Chamber website. Registration for IN.network is available on the website, www.spring-fieldchamber.com/IN.network. For more information, contact Kristen Westerman, (417) 862-5567 or email [email protected].

Public AffairsA mutually beneficial relationship: Chamber event highlights U.S. – U.K. Trade and investment opportunities between the United States and United Kingdom were the topic of conversation on March 23 in Springfield. The two countries are, respectively, the largest source of international investment in the other country, with approximately one million jobs in each country dependent on compa-nies based in the other. The Chamber’s International Business Council hosted a luncheon meeting featuring British Consul General Robert Chatterton Dickson. Based in Chicago, Consul General Dickson is responsible for promoting the United Kingdom’s interests and relations with the U.S. in 13 Midwestern states. During his visit to Springfield, Dickson and Emma Briggs, the regional director of U.K. Trade and Investment, toured the Roy Blunt Jordan Valley Innovation Center and met with several local businesses. Dickson’s message to the International Business Council focused on the U.K.’s strategy of fiscal discipline as a means of economic recovery and the positive role of international trade and investment in stimulating economic growth. At the conclusion of the meeting, Chamber Chairman of the Board Jerry Harmison presented Dickson with a “Key to the City” and a proclamation that designated March 23 as “Her Majesty’s Consul General Robert Chatterton Dickson Day” in Springfield. Consul General Dickson visited Springfield at the invitation of Katherine Simon, CEO of Allen Filters, Inc., Missouri’s 2009 Exporter of the Year.

Leadership Springfield www.leadershipspringfield.org

“The mission of Leadership Springfield is to inspire, develop and connect leaders to serve the Springfield community. “ In March, our community lost a leader who lived his life by the Leadership Springfield mission. Alan Bates served as class president of Leadership Spring-field Class One. He spent the next 26 years serving, giving, and growing our community.

Bates served on the board of the Council of Boy Scouts of America, as president of the board of the Devel-opmental Center of the Ozarks, was a supporter of gifted education and President of WINGS. He was a member of the Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce, Baron’s Club, Lotus Club, Springfield Investors Club and MENSA. He supported numerous charities including Lost and Found, Boys & Girls Club and the American Diabetes As-sociation. He also had a long affiliation with University Heights Baptist Church. In his professional capacity as an architect, Bates strived to positively shape our community through projects, including Andy Williams Moon River Theatre, Inspiration Point at Shep-pard of the Hills, Chesterfield Village, University Heights Baptist Church, Ray Steven’s Theatre, MSU Student Union, many projects for Cox Hospital, working with the Jared family and Taylor family on Price Cutter stores, including one of his favorites, the Gallery Bistro, and many others. Bates gave full support to Lead-

ership Springfield within his office, sending his employees through the program. Partner Steve Warlick recalls, “As soon as he took me under his wing and saw I had the ability to become his partner, he mentioned Leadership Springfield. I still recall how busy our firm was then and questioning whether or not I could take that time out of the office. Alan insisted that the time away with Leadership was well worth it and I see that today.” Warlick reflects, “Alan was my mentor, my partner and my friend. He honestly stood for simply doing what was right and giving back to the community by any means possible. He taught me this from day one. It was rare for there to be a time we weren’t working on some sort of charitable project. Alan felt if you gave back and simply did the right things in life combined with good work ethic, things would always find a way of falling into place. And it always has for us.” Photo provided by Springfield Busi-ness Journal.

Alan Bates: A Servant Leader

Impacting the next generation of leaders It was our honor to dedicate the 2011 Leadership Springfield Golf Tournament to Alan Laker Bates. This tournament funds are used for our Leadership Academy. Established in 1990 as a project of Leader-ship Springfield, the Academy is open to juniors from nine Springfield public and private high schools. Thirty-two students are selected each year for a shortened ver-sion of the adult program. Initial funding for the project during the first four classes was provided by the Southeast Rotary, Sunrise Rotary Club and Springfield Rotary Club. The Leadership Springfield Golf Tournament and program day sponsors are now the main funding sources for the Academy.

The program goals of the academy are:

• To provide exposure to community structure and issues.

• To provide interaction between developing leaders and the established leaders of today.

• To develop personal skills needed for future roles as leaders.

• To emphasize the importance of community service.

• To harness the enthusiasm of youth to help solve local problems.

We feel Bates would be honored to impact a group of the next generation of leaders.

Below are the results from this year’s golf tournament. First place: Mike Cherry; Eldon Combs; Leland Burch; John Hail. Second place: Brian Orr; Jarod Michel; Steve Warlick; Kirk Elmquist. Third place: Dusty Emmert; Sean Taylor; Stu Stenger; Greg Hall. Fourth place: David Hamm; Denise LeBolt; Dan Malachowski; John Horton. The winner for the sponsor recognition drawing was Sean Taylor.
