A LETTER FROM OUR EDITORAnother month, another issue! We are so excited about this issue. We have got our wonderful Graphic Designer Renee to put it together and it is looking fresher than ever. The team have been very busy with some of us wandering overseas, while some of us attended Groovin the Moo, Arctic Monkeys and Jake Bugg performances and and my-self and Imogen, our sub-editor, lost our heads at the vintage suitcase markets.

I hope you enjoy reading it as much as we like writing it. Happy May, Love the WOTS Team!

Nestled amongst the cacti and bare earth of the &RORPELDQ PRXQWDLQVLGH OLHV D WRZQ WKDW WHVWLƓHVthe best things in life are taken slowly, and with cake.

I am talking about the place I have been for the past few days, a small town called Villa de Leyva in Columbia.

Restaurants and cafés line cobblestone streets, peaking out from white buildings of stunning Spanish Colonial design.

$ ZRUOG DZD\ IURP WKH WUDIƓF DQG FKDRV RIBogota (where I began my trip), Villa de Leyva has become a sanctuary for the hard working and well-off.

We are told that the surrounding area boasts fossils and lakes, but it has been hard to drag ourselves away from the welcoming streets and the temptation of coffee and cakes at every corner.

The Lonely Planet travel guide recently named Brisbane “Australia’s hippest city”, and it’s not hard to see why.

7KH ƓUVW WLPH , FDPH DFURVV WKH VWRUHwas a total accident but a happy one. I was completely taken aback by everything from the amazing interior, the stylish clothing and the beyond-love-ly proprietor. The owner of The Happy Cabin, Leah-Jane Musch opened the cozy, log-cabin inspired clothing store in the winter of 2012, drawing constant inspiration from her childhood mem-ories of camping, with the vibe of West End adding quirky character to the shop. If you’re looking for a cozy and yet upbeat bar, look no further than Scratch. Their specialty - locally brewed beer - is what makes this bar the coolest hide-away for the winter, not to mention the friendly staff who make every visit feel OLNH\RXUƓUVW0\ROGHUEURWKHULQWURGXFHGPHWRWKHJORU\RIUHOD[HG7KXUVGD\nights and buzzing weekends that Scratch has to offer. What you see if what you get and that’s what gives The Scratch its unique character. Not to mention the charming painting on one of the walls of two men with mouse and octopus heads… pop on over to scrtachbar.com to view the current beers on taps

(they change EVERY DAY).

So if it’s not obvious by now, West End is THE bar hub of Brisbane. When visiting Jungle I felt I had been transported somewhere in the tropics as I sipped on a pina colada that was served from a REAL pineapple! All their drinks are served in nifty things from a monkey to a tribal tiki stick. The decor was inspiring and after sitting on my tree stump, gazing into the photos of islands and sipping on tropical drinks I was almost shocked when I walked outside and found I was not in the tropics at all. The tropical vacation illusion is what makes Jungle the perfect winter hideaway. And for only the price of a cocktail!

The crowd was anticipating “Punching In A Dream” and they performed it right at the end, leaving everyone buzzing for the next act.

The Jungle Giants, famously known as “Jungies” made a sleepy entrance into Groovin’ the Moo. With an early set time of 12.30pm, when the crowds were still piling in, the JG still managed to quickly gather up an audience. Their upbeat, catchy songs such as “Skin and Bone” got everyone bopping around but I’m not sure if this was out of enjoyment or simply trying to warm up in the chilly morning breeze. With a limited set they could only do so much, but I know from previously seeing the band, they never fail to disappoint.

3. what so not

1. architecture in helsinki

2. loon lake

!e last time I saw Architecture in Helsinki perform was at Big Day Out in 2012 and oh how I’ve missed them. Architecture in Helsinki are the kind of band you secretly listen to alone in your room and they’re the kind of band you create secret dance routines to because their music feels so good. And despite the corniness of their songs, they got the crowd dancing around like complete fools - and having a ball doing so. !e band dress up and have choreographed danced moves, making you feel slightly less ridiculous for getting your groove on with the stranger next to you. I really enjoyed the mix between old and new songs and they blended them together quite cleverly. “Con-tact High” is the famous song that everyone knows and loves and of course they le" it to the end, building great anticipation. De#nitely a band to see to li" your spirits – they feel almost like a super-fun Pilates class.

I had never heard of What So Not and only went on recommendation of a few people I had spoken to on the day - I did not regret my decision. Anyone who wanted to have a groove was under the Moulin Rogue tent at 8.30pm where the DJ mixed familiar grooves, with a hell RIDORWRI)OXPHZKLFK,DPGHƓQLWHO\QRWFRPSODLQLQJabout. The absolute best moment of the set was ‘Tennis Court” by Lorde (the Flume remix). Coincidently, I had been listening to that remix non-stop for days before the concert, so when it came on I may or may not have fan-girled a little. There was a whole lot of feel-good and smooth dance music that had everyone in a trance.

Some bands show their personality simply with the music they play and how they perform… and this is absolutely what Loon Lake is all about. This Aussie band have crafted an upbeat indie-rock sound that attracted everyone from the die-hard ravers all the way to the fussy hipsters. They just seemed to bring everyone together with their bright and colourful set,. They beamed lazers and interacted with the crowd in a display that was more than just music – it was a true performance. When you see crowds of people not MXVWŴRFNLQJEXWUXQQLQJWRWKH0RXOLQ5RXJHWHQWWRVHHLoon Lake, you know they must be doing something right.

Our talented photographer/writer Julia Sansone had a chat with futuristic shoe

label, MONSTER shoes and snapped some of their unique designs.

We love this shoot and the best bit is all of there shoes can be customised to

different sizes and colours. They take catering to the consumer to the next

level.

When you mention the word ‘Winter’ to somebody, it is usually followed by a shudder or a moan. I am the opposite of those people, I just love it. Summer is nice too, but by June I am well over sweating it out and dripping in salty water.

Winter is the perfect excuse to nanna-out and let yourself go. You will most days in Winter see me sporting a giant over-sized knit jumper with tights to hide un-kept legs and a beanie to mask the raggedy hair underneath. &RPIRUWFRPHVƓUVWLQZLQWHUWKDWLVWKHQXPEHURQHUXOH

What other time of the year can you eat creamy pasta dishes and drink hot chocolate all night long? Summer would not be so forgiving of behaviors like this.

Okay maybe I don’t love ALL things about Winter, I don’t like the part when you get out of the shower and it’s really freezing or when your lips and skin get all dry.

But nothing can beat the feeling of being snuggled under the covers with the heater or ƓUHSODFHJRLQJZKLOH\RXZDWFKDZKROHVHDVRQRI*,5/6(let’s be honest) and eat a half a block of chocolate.

I know I sound like Bridget Jones saying this stuff, but I think Winter is the same for everyone. Suddenly the nights out become rarer and everyone is suddenly ‘so busy.’ This is just code for being a sloth.

Well looks like my secret is out. It is just under a month until I go into hibernation for the Winter, I should probably make the most of it!

Loving these addictive beats this month. The new Black Keys song, ‘Fever’ is a fresh twist on their old sound and I am loving the old school vibe. Oliver Tank and Ta-ku have released a super chill new tune which I am also loving.

Currently a massive fan of Brisbane based ‘Triple J Unearthed’ band, Vancouver Sleep Clinic. Their song ‘Collapse’ is incredible, as well as the track called ‘Vapour’. Make sure you check them out, the singer sounds a bit like a young Bon Iver.

Also in music news, check out the cover that the Arctic Monkeys did of Tame Impala’s, ‘Feels like we only go backwards’ on Like a Version, it is great! They have been touring the country this week and I have heard only the best reviews.

Other FRESH albums to check out is Chet Faker’s new one and the Horrors also released one this week too, which is amazing! The track list for Lana Del Rey’s second album have also been released, we cannot wait for that, plus the Black Key’s full album is set for release soon. Exciting times!
