THE CIRCUIT RIDER
Vol. 16, No. 5 May 2016
FROM THE PASTOR
Come Holy Spirit, come.
Come as the fire and burn; come as the wind and cleanse;
Come as the light and reveal Convict, convert, consecrate.
Come, Holy Spirit, come.
Pentecost is the most exuberant of Christian celebrations.
Its earliest celebrants were accused of drinking new wine and early on a working morning at that!! Pentecost celebrates
the coming of God’s Holy Spirit. You may have noticed in the opening prayer that the Spirit is spoken of as wind and
fire. These are two of numerous terms used to describe the Spirit’s activity. We make mistakes when we try to say how
the Spirit must work, but these two pictures of the Spirit have been observed. There is a fiery and dramatic way of
the Spirit. Fire sets on fire. The Spirit is contagious.
The Spirit also comes as wind, as breath, as the breath of life. The Spirit is as natural and gentle as air that gives us
life without our knowing it.
Wherever one acts in mercy and love, the Spirit is there,
though perhaps unnamed. The Good Samaritan was acting in the Spirit though he would never even have called himself
good, just a Samaritan doing his job.

(From the Pastor continued)
When we feel gratitude, it is the work of the Spirit. The artist reaching out after beauty, the scientist after truth, the reformer
after goodness, all are empowered by the Spirit though they may not name the name.
Whenever we feel a space in our own lives, the Spirit is at work
like the gentle wind. A famous pastor, Phillips Brooks, wrote to a young clergyperson, “Less and less grows the consciousness
of seeking God. Greater and greater grows the certainty that God is seeking us and giving himself to us to complete the
measure of our capacities.”
I invite you to have everyday conversations about how you
have encountered God. You are encouraged to be creative in community for the sake of others.
Come as the fire, O Spirit, and burn, come as the wind and
cleanse. Come, Holy Spirit, come. Amen
Together in service,
Pastor Linda

May Senior Connection Meeting Will Feature “Dolley Madison”
The program for May 10th will be “The Life and Times of Dolley Madison,” presented by Dale Sayers. A native Virginian, Dale is a retired elementary teacher. She graduated from James Madison University (then Madison College) with a B. S. in Early Childhood Education. However, history has always been her great academic love. She began researching her family history over 40 years ago, and has written two books (The Haynies of Northumberland and Allied Families and The Tucker Family of Campbell
and Charlotte Counties). She resides with her husband at Hanover Courthouse and has two grown children. Since the colonial/revolutionary period is of special interest to Dale, she became fascinated with “America’s first First Lady,” Dolley Madison. Dolley was poised to witness historic events and personally knew all the movers and shakers of that era. Married to James Madison, an intellectual giant and the Father of the Constitution, she was his partner in both marriage and politics. Come to hear a firsthand account of events that shaped the iconic personality she became.
A covered dish lunch will be enjoyed at noon followed by the program at 1 pm. Bring a generous dish to share and invite a friend to come enjoy this engaging program.

WHY DO WE PAY APPORTIONMENTS AGAIN?
This is a common question in United Methodist churches and was one that was recently discussed at length at our Finance Team and our Church Council goal-setting meeting. It was suggested that we highlight in the newsletter the apportionment system with a goal of better understanding and conversation among our members.
The apportionments are a group of programs approved by the broader church at the Annual, Jurisdictional, and General Church levels and that each local congregation agrees to pay their fair share each year. Currently, Chamberlayne Heights has set a goal of paying 100% of district apportionments, 80% of Conference apportionments and 100% of the clergy benefit apportionment.
Support of the apportionments is one way of participating in mission giving. Our apportionments help to pay the cost for our United Methodist colleges and universities, for camping ministries, for mission initiatives around the world, and help to support the perhaps less attention-getting but the none the less necessary items of providing administrative support to district and conference offices and supporting retired clergy and their spouses.
Over the next several months, we will highlight specific apportioned items so that we are all better equipped to make decisions on this important aspect of mission giving.
Please feel free to direct any questions or comments to me or to a member of the Finance Team.
Together in service,
Pastor Linda
