How Do We Get There? Spring has arrived and we are all busy working in our yards and anticipating the coming summer. Last year we know it was exceptionally hot and dry. Our lawns took a beating but we were spared a fire outbreak. Many have been fearful of a repeated fire threat for this coming summer. During the Annual Homeowners meeting last July we talked about becoming a “Firewise Community” and requested volunteers to research the steps necessary to achieve this certification. No volunteers stepped forward and as a consequence no progress was made. We have not been able to proceed with some fun events because there was interest but an insufficient number of volunteers resulting in the cancellation of those activities. Your HOA Board remains committed to listening to the community and implementing your wishes as we can. In my last message to you a reference was made to great communities where people want to live and home values are appreciating because the people who live there put their time and talent into making them that way. Once more we are making an appeal for volunteers to represent their street or block. We, the Board, would like to hear back from the community. If you would like to volunteer and to be on the Communications Committee please contact Denise at Southwest Management to let her know of your interest. is will take approximately one hour a month to serve on this team. Also, the terms of two Board members are expiring this July so begin to think about whether this is a place that you are willing to serve. A ‘big thumbs up’ to everyone who came out during our spring clean up. The greenbelts are looking better even if they are not as finished as some of the volunteers wanted to make them. We learned from this experience that we should do this each spring and bring in a specialist to advise homeowners as they clear dead limbs and brush. Some individuals have come to the Board requesting the Board hire a service to clean out the greenbelts. The Board is not willing to do this because not all homeowners live on a greenbelt and their resources would be used in a way that does not benefit them. Second, there are greenbelts that are not owned the HOA and they too would pay without benefiting comparable to those homeowners whose home is on an HOA owned greenbelt. Consequently, there would be uneven treatment of homeowners, which the Board strives not to do. The decision to live on a greenbelt is a little like living on a mountain. You have a great view but during a heavy rain you are at greater risk to have your home sliding down the mountain. We remain sensitive to the concerns about fire during the coming summer. We will work to keep ourselves informed and advise the community of the steps that we should take as we learn more. We encourage all homeowners to abide by the water restrictions in effect and be very careful in the use of fire outdoors during the coming season. The Communications Committee could be extremely useful in this area in helping to identify potential hazards and allowing them to be corrected before they become a problem. All of us must work together to keep our community safe and thriving. Paula Dawning Vice President

Are We Fire Safe? How Do We Get There?Spring has arrived and we are all busy

working in our yards and anticipating the coming summer.

This will

take approximately one hour a month to serve on this team.

Some individuals have come to the Board

requesting the Board hire a service to clean out the greenbelts. The Board is not willing to do this because not all homeowners live on a greenbelt and their resources would be used in a way that does not benefit them.

Second, there are greenbelts that are not owned the HOA and they too would pay without benefiting comparable

to those homeowners whose home is on an HOA owned greenbelt. Consequently, there would be uneven

treatment of homeowners, which the Board strives not to do. The decision to live on a greenbelt is a little like living on a mountain. You have a great view but during a heavy rain you are at greater risk to have your home sliding down the mountain. We remain sensitive to the concerns

about fire during the coming summer. We will work to keep ourselves informed and advise the community of the steps that we should take as we learn more.

We encourage al l homeowners to abide by the water restrictions in effect and be very careful in the use of fire outdoors during the coming season. The Communications Committee could be extremely useful in this area in helping to identify potential hazards and allowing them to be corrected before they become a problem. Rattlesnake Awareness We recently received some reports of snake activity in the

community, primarily in areas adjacent to greenbelts and wooded areas. In an effort to raise awareness in the community we ask that you please review the following information regarding rattlesnakes with your family:

Rattlesnakes may or may not make a rattling noise before striking, so be on the alert when out walking or hiking. Follow these tips if you do encounter a rattlesnake: • Move back slowly and deliberately.• If you can, put at least four to six feet between your body

and the reptile. • Then walk away. Rattlesnakes do not chase people. If you are bitten by a rattlesnake

follow these guidelines: DON’T

• Don’t apply ice to the bitten area. • Don’t make an incision of any kind on the wound. • Don’t try to suction or suck out the poison. -Don’t use a

constriction band or tourniquet. • Don’t administer drugs or alcohol. • Don’t use electric shock treatment.

DO • Do remain calm and move away from the snake. • Do remove all jewelry, watches, etc., from the affected area. • Do drink fluids to help prevent shock. • Do immobilize affected area and keep at level below the heart.• Do decrease total body activity as much as possible. • Do seek medical attention as soon as possible.

Make an impact.

Question of the MonthWhy were there SO many weeds in lawns this year? Was it all the rain we had?

Yes, but that is only a portion of the answer.  As always with Mother Nature, there are several contributing factors.   Here goes!  In 2011, we had a very hot and very dry summer.  This caused our lawns and even native, natural green and grassy areas to become weak.  This weakness in turf creates thin and bare spots.  Nature abhors a vacuum or waste of good open soil so any seeds (weed or otherwise) which are opportunistic grab a place to set up camp.  Along comes the good, nurturing late winter and early spring rains.  Couple that with a warmish winter and BOOM…..you have a bumper crop of Mother Nature’s finest!

Other contributing factors are (1) some folks have chosen NOT to have comprehensive weed treatment programs and (2) those who did had difficulties with windy conditions (you should never apply sprays when it is windy).

Our conditions were perfect this year for weeds.SUSTAINABLE LANDSCAPE TIP

An alternative to mulch (wood) which has to be replaced once a year is decomposed granite (aka DG in the trade).  DG works well to keep weed seeds from germinating, keep soil moisture in and allows some aeration of the soil (in planting beds, but not on roads or paths where it becomes compacted).  It is aesthetically pleasing, especially if it is contrasted in the same planting area with an attractive river gravel or rock.  Be aware that small pieces of DG can collect in the treads of shoes if used in pathways.  The small pieces are not friendly with polished hardwood floors!

LANDSCAPING TIPS FOR APRIL & MAYCool weather is finally over and tender vegetable plants can be

set out now.Prune and trim and fertilize spring blooming trees and shrubs

such as azaleas, bridal wreath, Indian hawthorns, redbuds, flowering peach and Tx mountain laurel.

Fertilize your lawn with an organic or biosolid fertilizer.  NO weed and feed EVER.

Turn your compost in your bin.

Remove the last of the winter damage from trees, shrubs and ground covers.

Replace lawn areas where possible with ground cover (living) or non-living mulches.
