THE ALUMNI VOICE FALL/WINTER 2012 VOLUME 33 * ISSUE 1 WILDCATS MAYFIELD Mayfield students not only excel in academics but in activ- ities outside of the classroom as well. Immediately follow- ing the tragedy in Connecticut, the Key Club put together an opportunity for students to make snowflakes for Sandy Hook. Wildcat focus classes dedicated time to make snowflakes as well. It ended up being a great success. Sophomore Michaela Shannon said, “I think doing a craft for the school was a great way to show that we care, es- pecially since so many students got involved!” Earlier in the fall, the annual Homecoming Dance was held. About 300 students spent a wonderful night in Poly- nesian Paradise. During the week, many students partic- ipated in the bonfire, parade, and pep assembly. Junior Austin Crowl said about the dance, “I really enjoyed the music and I was able to have a great night with all of my closest friends.” The Homecoming event crowned Mikki Vance as our 2012 Homecoming Queen. Vance is secre- tary of the senior class, a member of the varsity soccer team, and a student in the Excel TECC early childhood education program. Vance said, ”Being crowned Home- coming Queen made me feel that my friends like me as a person, which is a great feeling. I honestly didn’t think it was going to be me.” Joining Vance on the Homecoming court were Annemarie Paravoles, Teresa Eisler, Laura Lenaeduzzi, and Kylie Tritt. To raise funds for the English Department, the student band Evolution performed a concert in January. Senior Vittorio Valletta and junior Christina DiFranco are lead vocalists in the band, which plays a variety of rock, pop, and folk songs. English teacher Nicholas Somich said, “Vittorio and Christina are so talented. We were fortunate to find out Evolution was so willing to help us with our fundraiser.” The concert – in addition to a concert t-shirt sale – raised funds to help pay for Shakespearean actors to teach some of the 10 th and 12 th grade Shakespeare units. “I love it when the Shakespeare actors come in; it’s very interesting and a great experience!” said junior Nate Shultz. SO, WHAT’S GOING ON AT MY ALMA MATER? On the athletic field, our Wildcats made us proud once again. The football team went 6-4 and advanced to the Division One - Region One playoffs. “We faced almost all the adversity that could have been thrown at a team and we never gave up and finished our season strong without any regrets,” said senior wide receiver Mitch Lon- go. Longo and senior quarterback Drazen Markovic earned All-Conference. Markovic also made the All- District team and was awarded Conference MVP. Al- though the Cats lost to St. Edward, the number one team in the state, Coach Larry Pinto’s team was proud of how hard they played this season. Senior John Pasquale said, “Our season had ups and downs but with the sched- ule we played we didn’t give up and as a result we made the Division One playoffs, which only a small amount of Mayfield football teams have done.” On the soccer field, the varsity boys won the conference and districts once again. Finishing with a record of 11-7- 3, captain Amari Williams was thrilled to see the team overcome the loss of many of starters from last year. Wil- liams said, “This season went way better than expected. Two New Scholarships to Begin with Class of ‘13

Wayne Farinacci Dedication and Commitment Scholarship

Since the inception of the Mayfield High School Alumni Association in 1980, Wayne has served as President for 32 of our 33 years. For the past 15 years, Wayne also has served as the Alumni Coordinator. In that time, he has devoted himself to the positive development of the Alumni Association and service to Mayfield High School and its student body. Wayne has led by example all of these years, and now wishes to establish a scholarship that will be earmarked for a student with similar traits and drive. This $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a stu-dent who demonstrates the qualities of leadership, ser-vice, and commitment to teams, offices, or clubs during the student’s high school career. While this student must be highly involved in student offerings, he/she must also maintain the ability to influence his peers in a positive manner. Down the road, we are hopeful that one of these scholarship recipients will become a future Presi-dent of the Mayfield High School Alumni Association.

“Little Joe” Micale Literary Scholarship

In his book CONFESSIONS…of a Hollywood Hairstylist, Little Joe Micale confessed he was bitten by the writing bug in Grade 4B at Willliam H. Brett Elementary School in Collinwood when he wrote his first play for Mrs. Clark. His interest in writing morphed into passion when he was in his freshman year at Ohio University. In 1960 Joe’s fa-ther, Paul, moved the family to Hollywood to pursue a movie acting career. As a hairstylist in Hollywood, Joe’s first client was Sidney Skolsky who wrote for Photoplay Magazine. Sidney introduced Joe to Clint Eastwood and his hairstyling career took off. Joe had a 22-year friend-ship with Freddie de Cordova and became Johnny Car-son’s “Go-To” guy. Among his clients were his good friend, Casey Kasem, followed by Red Skelton, Frank Sinatra, Alan Alda, Vic Morrow, Carroll O’Connor and Jim Carrey, to name a few. Joe wrote comedy scripts for Hol-lywood Squares and worked on project developments with Tim Conway. Joe and his wife, Ginny, moved to Cape Coral, Florida in 1999. He never imagined himself as a newspaper columnist, but Joe enjoyed writing pro-files for The Islander Newspaper on Sanibel Island, and became well known when he wrote the LITTLE JOE’S HOLLYWOOD column for The News-Press, a Gannett Newspaper. Confessions… contains the cream of the crop of Little Joe’s Award-Winning Newspaper Columns. When Joe died on November 26, 2011, he was the Enter-tainment Writer/Editor for the “Snowbird Journal,” an on-line Southwest Florida Publication. He would have been proud to encourage and help support a student who seeks a writing career. This $500 scholarship will be awarded to a student who has achieved specific literary accomplishments or plans to pursue a literary career. It is designed to encourage and help support a student who seeks a writing career.

Scott Finerman, ‘78 Dr. Steven Troeger, ‘67

2012 Mayfield High School

Dr. Steven Troeger is a successful chiropractic doctor in Denver, Colorado. However, Dr. Troeger also moon-lights as a singer and musician. Professionally, Dr. Troeger runs his own practice which focuses on sports injuries and nutrition. As the official chiropractic doctor for the Colorado Ballet Company, Dr. Troeger volun-teered to treat a great many dance and athletic injuries from the very youngest dancers and athletes to the pro-fessional elite. Before earning his chiropractic degree, Steven Troeger traveled across the country for a year with the music group “Up With People.” As a highlight, Troeger played in front of an audience at New York Met-ropolitan Opera House at Lincoln Center. Following his musical ambition, Troeger toured nightclubs for three years playing rock-and-roll with two fellow Mayfield High grads. Following his music career, Troeger earned his bachelor degree from Northeastern Illinois University, and eventually earned his Doctorate of Chiropractic in 1978. Dr. Troeger is actively involved in his community as a leader in his church and neighborhood. Notably, he has for 20 years volunteered his skills and time with the Salvation Army clinic and the Denver Rescue Mission clinic providing the poor and indigent with much needed health care. In addition to his community service, Dr. Troeger stays active in music as part of an a cappella group. His group has several CDs and performs regular-ly in his hometown. MHS taught Dr. Troeger discipline, which, he concedes, led him to achieve in college. Spe-cifically, Dr. Troeger credits Mr. Sabatino for his kind-ness and Mr. Andrews for his toughness. Mr. Treu taught young Steven Troeger to love music, which has continued throughout his life. Troeger states, “I certainly have always considered MHS a substantial donor to the path of my life’s success.”

Mr. Scott Finerman paved his way to success by earning a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Michigan in 1982. By 1987, Mr. Finerman had earned his Juris Doctor from Cleveland Marshall College of Law. Regional public accounting firm Cohen and Company hired the fledgling CPA where he worked his way to the title of partner in 1990. Crain’s Cleveland Business named Scott Finerman as one of the “Forty under Forty”, and he was also the recipient of the Cleveland State Alumni Emerging Leadership Award. In 1999, Mr. Finerman joined the firm Second Generation, Ltd. as its CFO and Vice President. Scott Finerman’s civic service reflects his deep commitment to his community. Notably, Mr. Finer-man served as Treasurer for Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson’s Campaign Committee. He currently serves as the Treasurer to Cleveland City Council. Additionally, Mr. Finerman can claim the title of youngest person to be-come President of the City Club of Cleveland, an organi-zation to which he still belongs and is actively involved. Known as the “Citadel of Free Speech”, the City Club has fostered many long-standing personal and professional relationships for Mr. Finerman. Dear to his heart is his leadership within the Cleveland Baseball Federation. Mr. Finerman feels greatly rewarded that the CBF provides positive experiences in the lives of children who are often victims of poverty and family challenges. Scott Finerman attended Mayfield Schools from kindergarten through Grade 12. While in school, Mr. Finerman credits his expo-sure to people from all walks of life and various back-grounds for his civic dedication. At Mayfield he also learned that “input equals output.” Mr. Finerman also credits his experiences outside the classroom playing ten-nis and serving on Student Council as a sturdy foundation for his accomplishments.

Alumni Hall of Fame Inductees

As a student, athlete, coach, business leader, and par-ent, Michael Sloe has experienced great success since walking the halls of MHS. Mr. Sloe is currently the own-er of Total ID Solutions, a leader in the identification business. He is an active member in the community and continues to carry on the tradition of Mayfield excel-lence. Mr. Sloe excelled both on the field and in the classroom during his tenure at Mayfield High. He earned an athletic scholarship to attend Youngstown State Uni-versity where he was a three-year starting quarterback, despite suffering a severe knee injury as a freshman. His ability to overcome this typically career-ending injury earned Mr. Sloe the Goodwill Industries’ Guts and Cour-age Award in 1982. Mr. Sloe finished his time at YSU as an assistant football coach and earned a BS in Market-ing Management in 1985. Mr. Sloe credits his time at Mayfield with helping mold him into the successful indi-vidual he is today. Total ID Solutions created and in-stalled a digital ID management system for all 88 county sheriffs’ offices in Ohio. He also helped create an inte-grated system for Child Identification Cards, which was endorsed by the CEO of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Additionally, Total ID Solutions had the great honor and responsibility of managing identification and credentials for the 2004 International Children’s Games in Cleveland. Mr. Sloe also is an ac-tive member in the community and a member of the St. Paschal Baylon Church. Mr. Sloe’s generosity to the community has also allowed Total ID Solutions to spon-sor many charitable endeavors. Organizations such as “The Upside of Downs,” “The Horizon of Hope,” and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children have received contributions to fund their causes.

Kathleen Atlagovich has spent her illustrious career providing medical services as a nurse, as a mentor, and as an Officer in the United States Army. After complet-ing her honorable service for the United States Army Medical Department Regiment, Ms. Atlagovich has been a key employee at several top medical facilities in North-east Ohio. She has worked for University Hospitals, the Cleveland Clinic, the Breen School of Nursing at Ursu-line College, and is currently serving as a Pediatric Acute Care Nurse Practitioner at Akron Children’s Hos-pital. Ms. Atlagovich has earned multiple degrees since graduating from MHS in 1985. After earning a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Ursuline College, Ms. Atlago-vich was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant through John Carroll University’s ROTC Program. She served her country for more than three years as a staff nurse and supervisor at Tripler Army Medical Center in Hono-lulu, Hawaii. Ms. Atlagovich also earned a Masters De-gree in Nursing from the University of Akron, and later completed her Post Masters as a Pediatric Nurse Practi-tioner. Ms. Atlagovich has found great personal suc-cess in the field of nursing. However, her greatest achievement is helping to develop the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Acute Care Program at the University of Akron. This program helps to certify advanced practice nurses. Ms. Atlagovich finds enjoyment through teach-ing aspiring nurses to care for pediatric patients and advance in the field of nursing. Ms. Atlagovich credits Mayfield with helping her to become a well-rounded indi-vidual. Ms. Atlagovich stated, “The entire science de-partment was truly an amazing group that not only taught us science but encouraged a true love of sci-ence.” Ms. Atlagovich proud to maintain friendships to-day that were formed during her time at MHS.

Request for a Multi-Class

Reunion Sent In

The Alumni Association received a request from Steve Gulyas, ‘89 regarding Multi-Class Reunions. Below is Steve’s inquiry and the Association’s response.

Steve asks: I wanted to make a suggestion regarding reunions, but wanted to bounce this off of you first to see if perhaps it might have been previously brought up. Has the idea of a multi-year class reunion ever been consid-ered? My thinking is that since alumni may have had friends that were a year or two behind or ahead of them that they might like to see, they would never get to see them at one of the regular class reunions for their class alone. I have no idea what kind of interest there is for this type of reunion or what kind of planning effort/resources this might require, but would this be an idea you could bounce off of the Executive Board or perhaps some class presidents to gauge their reaction?

Association’s response: Not only is this a good idea, but the Alumni Association has used it. We have had "Multi-Class Reunions" when we used to have our Reverse Raf-fles. We’ve not had Reverse Raffles for the past four years and will probably not have them again because sell-ing tickets was difficult. The Multi-Class Reunions were actual reunions. For example, 1963, 1968, 1973 and 1983 had one. We did this for about seven years with dif-ferent classes. Smaller classes in the 40’s or 50’s have done this also where reunions were grouped in a string, e.g. 1943 - 1950 in 2011, among others. The Association would consider helping classes create such a reunion. I suppose classes, like you just did, would have to let us know they are interested is such an event. We can take it from there. Class reunion committees would share the responsibilities and costs, but the Alumni Association would provide ample assistance to make the job much easier than each class holding it’s own reunion. Having it around the Alumni Golf Outing is an added possibility!

A lifetime membership to the Alumni Association is only $35. It is the surest way to be located by your class reunion com-mittee and stay up-to-date on your alma mater’s activities. Also, it becomes much easier to participate in Association events. Remember, there is no fee for those alumni who are over 65 years old. Also, married Mayfield graduates can join for the same $35 lifetime fee. Please feel free to copy the registration form from this newsletter and give it to a fellow al-um. If you have any questions regarding membership, you may contact us at: [email protected]
