EDITORIAL

Benwick’s Jubilee Celebrations are nearing ever closer and it looks the the committee has

set out to spoil us! There is a host of events planned, just see page 4 for the schedule. I would like as many people to submit photographs of the celebra-tions for use on the village website - see page 5 for details.

There’s the usual range of updates from our village groups and an update from the Parish Council too.

And I know it has been a while, but the new Benwick Bugle website is nearly ready and should be launched prior to the next edition!

Glass Bottle Banks

Did you know that you can recycle your old glass bottles at the Chapel Gardens bottle

banks? They are in the car park behind the Bus Shelter.

There are two major benefits to using these bottle banks, firstly it saves you plenty of space in your blue bins, but the Parish Council also get a small amount of money based on how much is recycled through them. The more people use the banks, the more they get.

Friends of Benwick Church

As most of us can see the build-ing work continues at pace with the work on the

internals to the village hall now also in full swing. It is still anticipated that the new build will be completed early June and the Village hall by end of May.

There have been no fund raising events since the last bugle but as already reported we have now passed over the running of the Burns Night to the Village Hall committee, however we have also decided that the Christ-mas Bazaar going forward would also be better organised by this group and have formally informed them of this.

We will continue with a few low key fund raising events like Quiz nights etc.

We are also considering the future of the Friends of Benwick which was set up to raise the funds to build our new home, this during this year will be completed and we think the best route forward is the establish a ben-wick Church Committee. Here we will invite Anglicans and Methodists to at-tend with the sole purpose of running services and the day to day church business of Benwick. If possible we would like this set up as a subcommit-

tee of Doddington with Benwick PCC as this would save us much red tape, and we are answerable to the PCC rather than Ely. Once we understand this a little more we can advise accord-ingly.

In the meantime the next Quiz is pro-posed for July 7th so please do try to make that as the current champions are from Doddington and we really need this honour back in Benwick.

The evenings are getting lighter and the weather is getting warmer. For the Beavers, Cubs

and Scouts this means one thing – we can get outside again, and that means more adventurous stuff.

The Beavers have had their first eve-ning hike of the year (with the Cubs as well) up to Keyworth House Farm. On arriving they found a camp fire over which they cooked marshmallows followed by the traditional Scout sing-a-long.

The colony will also be attending a

Benwick Scout GroupCounty Activity Day at Mepal Outdoor Centre in July, where the activities include snorkelling, orienteering, rafting, climbing, backwoods cooking and trampolining.

The Cubs have been at Mepal Outdoor Centre, doing rock climbing and archery, and have started designing their go-kart for the Jubilee kart race.In June we will be taking the Cubs to Mepal to learn open water canoeing, and in July we will be doing a joint camp with the Ramsey Cub Pack at the Rural Life Museum. Among other activities they will be helping set up

Page 17: May/June 2012 Benwick Bugle

17www.benwickbugle.co.uk

for the Ramsey 1940s weekend. This will count toward their Community Challenge badge, Outdoor Challenge badge and Environment Partnership badge.

During the winter the Scouts have been learning map-reading and how prepare for a hike. By the time this is published they will have done their first hike without close supervision by the leaders. They are being offered an incentive of a supply of Mrs Glen’s shortbread for successfully completing this. In June they are going white wa-ter canoeing near Bedford. This will be the fourth time we have attended this event. I predict the scouts will come home very wet, very tired, very happy and very hungry.

The Scouts have started designing a go-kart for the Jubilee kart race. The designs so far show an outstand-ing amount of both imagination and practicality. The Scouts have also been invited to join the Cubs for their canoeing event at Mepal.

In future we intend to work more closely with the 1st Doddington Scout and the Ramsey Scout Groups. This will allow sharing expertise among leaders, joining in joint activities and camps

Thank you to everyone who took part in the recent patient sur-vey. We were very pleased to

discover that there is an overwhelm-ing appreciation of the services and the level of dedication and care the teams within our surgeries provide. A summary of the survey’s findings can be viewed at the surgeries.

From some responses, it became

clear from that certain facts are not as widely known as we would hope, consequently we have put together this ‘did you know’ list. Our next open meeting is on Thursday 3rd May at 6.30 at the Doddington Medical Cen-tre. All patients registered with the practice are welcome to attend!

Grant BarlowDid you Know?

Same day appointments can be made by phone from 8am, or online from 00:01 hrs. Just ask for details at the surgery. All medical professionals that you see at the surgery have access to your full medical history. You can make ap-pointments in advance with the doctor of your choice. Each patient is allowed 10mins with the doctor, many other surgeries only allow 5!

If all missed appointments were cancelled in advance, there would be far more appointments avaliable - please cancel your appointment if you no longer need it. If you need to speak to doctor, but do not need a consultation you can ar-range for a doctor to phone you.

Our Doctors are highly egarded by their peers and consequently are often involved in making national and regional decisions within the NHS. This some-times takes them away from the surgery but means they can ensure the greater needs of their patients are not overlooked or forgotten at policy level.

The surgery is currently undergoing refurbishments and there is now a wider selection of seating styles in the waiting room to suit patient needs. The new treatment room means more minor procedures are able to be per-formed at the surgery.

Improving privacy at the reception desk is being investigated. Meanwhile, if you wish to speak to any member of staff in confidence with more privacy, just ask and it can be arranged.

Parish Council Report

It has again been a busy year and in addition to the general business of the Council we have been involved

in a wide range of projects and initia-tives, from supporting the Fox’s Christ-mas Tree & biscuit event, to selecting a design for the new footbridge that will be replaced later this year by CCC.

Unfortunately we have recently lost Gill Thomas from the Council, we thank her for her work and time as a councillor. In her place we have co-opted Richard Emmitt and welcome his involvement.

I also recognise recent complaints regarding the standards of cemetery maintenance and we continue to work with the contractor to improve the service delivered. Finances remain strong, with a balance of £6,900 for the year retained as reserves.

Other key Highlights include:- Introduction of the FACT Community Transport Service.

Engagement with FDC & CCC Youth Services to deliver DJ workshop ses-sions for the youth of Benwick.

Creation of a new Cremation plot area in the cemetery.

Supporting the Scouts in their discus-sions with the District Commissioner following the closure of the Explorers section and their efforts to get them re-instated. Moving forward we continue to work with various bodies on the following initiatives:

Play Park Repairs FDC are due to repaint the equipment in the very near future.

Public Open Space Redevelopment of the POS at the ends of Heron Way & Fields View to pos-sibly include a new skate park, by the Parish Council.

Minor Highways Improvements Application to CCC for a 20mph speed limit outside the school as requested by the Governors.

Engagement with Middle Level In relation to the planned flood de-fences along Nene Parade, due later this year.

Finally, I would like to update you on our plans to commemorate the Queens Diamond Jubilee in June. A sub-committee involving volunteer members from almost all of Ben-wicks community groups, have come

Page 21: May/June 2012 Benwick Bugle

21www.benwickbugle.co.uk

together to organise an extensive programme of events, competitions and celebrations across the four day holiday, for all residents of Benwick (details will be delivered to every household in the village, this week-end). Originally we received a £1,000 grant from CCC to help support these celebrations but have recently had a ‘conditional offer’ of a further £1,050 following an application to ‘Awards for All’ (The Big Lottery fund). I hope you will all get involved and enjoy the events!

‘Ritings from the Rectory

Bishop Stephen Conway has been the Bishop of Ely for almost a year and is encouraging church-

es across the diocese to have a con-versation together which he is calling ‘Imagining the future’. It is something that the church is not very good at thinking about. A vision of a future that is different represents change and many of us find that living in such a fast paced rapidly changing world is quite unsettling. Many look to the church as a kind of oasis of stability where some former and more unchanging reality still prevails. When Jesus died on Good Friday his band of enthusiastic followers were shattered all their hopes and dreams seemed to have imploded. Their teacher was gone; his amazing enterprise of peace and love, of new starts for all who wanted his message of fullness of life here and into eternity seemed like just a dream that had come to a shuddering halt. They were demoralised and depressed, that is until Jesus began appearing to them again very much alive, but it took time for them to readjust their mind set.

On the first Easter Day two of Jesus followers were walking from Jerusalem to their home seven miles away in Emmaus they were downcast and emotionally drained. Jesus came and walked along with them but they didn’t recognise him. He engaged them in conversation asked what they were talking about. They poured out about their master and all that happened and they said ‘and we had hoped’ that he was the one to set Israel free. Jesus we are told opened up their minds to understand all that was written about him in the word of God, that the Saviour must suffer and die for the sins of the world and three days later rise to life again. When they got to their house Jesus broke some bread at table and they knew it was him, they knew all would be well and they rushed off to tell their friends.

The Bishop says it is a bit like that for the Church of England today, we had hoped we could keep things the same, we had hoped the church would con-tinue in its current shape, but he says this cannot be. Many churches are now being grouped together and we are beginning to learn to function in new and different ways. So as churches we will be seeking God

Page 23: May/June 2012 Benwick Bugle

23www.benwickbugle.co.uk

to find his plans and purposes for us as we journey with him into a future that is unknown to us but not to him. We shall be seeking to rekindle hopes and dreams to sustain us along the way. We shall learn to be Pilgrims once again who launch off on a journey that leads to something that really is worth having the hopes and dreams of the Kingdom of God.

What’s true of the church is true for all of us as well we all need to learn to travel full of hope and imagine a future full of peace and love and righteousness the only place to find hopes and dreams that will never let us down is to link our life journey to the Lord Jesus Christ who is the

resurrection and the life who IS the same yesterday, today and forever. Only he can offer us hope, meaning and purpose in a mixed up world and that’s what we all need.

In The Garden

Ithe is coming to one of the busiest months in the garden as you make the most of the warmer weather

and drying ground conditions.

Ornamental grasses are ready to be tidied up. This is best done by combing through the grass with a gloved hand to remove the dead grass that has been protecting the crown over the Winter months.

Rose should now be pruned back before they put on too much growth. This will stimulate new shoot produc-tion and result in a better show of flowers.

Prune late flowering deciduous shrubs before they flower in the sum-mer. Some examples are Buddleja, Caryopteris, Hydrangea, Lavatera, fuchsia, and Ceanothus.

Cornus and willows with coloured stems can be cut back removing a third of the old stems back to 200 mm above ground. This will encourage new growth. This new growth will have better colour than the old stems which will turn grey with age.

Beds can be dug over and any avail-able mulch should be spread around the base of plants to reduce competi-

tion from weeds, provide nutrients and importantly for 2012, retain pre-cious soil moisture.

Pests such as slugs will be appearing shortly and controls need to be put in place now to protect the tender new growths of your herbaceous perenni-als. Early morning and evening checks will reveal the extent of any slug prob-lem. As slugs have homing tendencies throwing them over the fence will not help. Instead put them in a bucket of salt water.

Tidy up the beds and remove any re-maining debris.

This is the ideal time divide perennial plants to produce more stock.

Apply a base dressing of fertiliser to the whole of the garden. Follow the instructions on the packaging of which ever fertiliser you are using. Over use of fertiliser can be VERY counter pro-ductive.

Clear the garden of all new weed growth and be prepared to keep up a strict regime for the next few weeks as the weeds will be very persistent at this time of year.
