On Sunday, May 3, 2015, nearly 300 guests packed the ballroom of the Wyndham Boston Andover to celebrate the second annual Massachusetts Education and Law Awards breakfast.

The Commission for Social Justice honored three long-time public servants for their outstanding dedication and service to their communities. The Justice Award was given to The Honorable Robert B. Calagione, First Justice of the Milford District Court since 2004, and Associate Justice of the Westborough District Court since 2001. The Law Enforce-ment Award was awarded to Woburn Police Chief Robert J. Ferullo Jr., a 35-year veteran of the Woburn Police Department, and Chief since 2011. The Pub-lic Service Award was granted to The Honorable Joseph A. Curtatone, Mayor of Somerville since 2003.

Commission for Social Justice Chairman Albert A. DeNapoli, Esq., spoke on the continuing work of the Commission on a state and national level, as there are still many instances of discrimination that affect the Italian-American commu-nity. He noted that the pres-ence of the three distinguished recipients of this year’s awards is proof of the positive impact Italian Americans have on our communities.

seniors pursuing degrees in majors such as engineering, education, journalism, busi-ness, and science. The students come from the tops of their classes and are involved in numerous national honor soci-eties, extracurricular activities, and volunteer organizations.

Scholarship Commission Chairman Donna Giuliani touched on the numerous and varied accomplishments of the scholarship recipients, and noted that they are well poised to become leaders in their cho-sen fi elds and communities as they progress through the next level of their education. Liaison to the Scholarship Commission and State Trustee Mary Ann Bello praised each recipient as they were presented with their awards, noting their individual successes and their college institutions of choice. Chari-table and Educational Trust Chairman Angelo Rossi was on hand to present the awards, 20 of which are given through the Trust directly.

Massachusetts Lieutenant Governor Karyn Polito, who served as Toastmaster for the event, spoke about the positive effects of her upbringing in an Italian-American home, and the values that were instilled in her that inspired her to commit to a life of public service.

In her remarks, State Presi-dent Carmelita Bello acknowl-edged that the two Commissions that are part of the event have long, rich histories of recogniz-ing the talents and accomplish-

ments of Italian-Americans, and of giving back to the community. She noted that over its 101 year history, the Grand Lodge has raised and given over $7 million to various charitable endeav-ors, including 60 years’ worth of scholarships. Additionally, she mentioned the invaluable work of the Commission for

Social Justice over the past 32 years, and their commitment to portraying the “true, positive im-age of Italian-Americans today” as part of the larger mission of honoring and promoting Italian culture and traditions.

All of the Law and Justice Award recipients took the opportunity to offer words of

wisdom and congratulations to the scholarship recipients. They talked about the importance of working hard to achieve their goals, and the role that their Italian-American families and culture played in their successes.

Dear Brothers and Sisters:The winter of 2015 is fi nally

over and we have a sunny, warm day as I write my last message to you as State President of the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts.

It has been a privilege to rep-resent you over the past two years. Going to fi lial lodge meet-ings and events, and talking to you at Grand Lodge functions has been what truly kept me focused and committed to do-ing what I believe is in the best interest of the membership at large. Over the past two years I was intent on understanding the underlying relationship among the four entities that comprise the Grand Lodge and making them as effective and effi cient as possible.

During my tenure, the Coun-cil reviewed the number of events the Grand Lodge ran, and concentrated on those events that demonstrated the best of what we do and high-lighted the positive contribu-tions of the Italian-American community. The events were wonderful successes and did not stress our fi nancial picture. We have added more social media, internet, and email com-munications in order to get our message out while maintaining our commitment to our senior

members with the print news-paper.

One project that will not be completed until after the State Convention is the publication of the book depicting the fi rst 100 years of the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts. I have seen the cover and a draft of the book and it looks fabulous. Every Lodge was asked to submit pictures and Anthony Sammarco has implemented the ones that best represent our Order. Once the book is published and available for sale, I am asking our Filial Lodges to buy several copies to donate to their local libraries. This will allow for a public rela-tions opportunity in your local paper and ensure that future generations will have a resource that depicts Italian-Americans and the Sons of Italy in a fair and equitable manner.

What has become apparent to me as I have spent a large amount of time and effort in working on behalf of the Order is that we need to seriously re-view how we operate, the struc-ture of the Grand Lodge, its of-fi cers, commissioners, and the Benefi t Insurance Commission. If we continue to stay the course we have been on for more than forty years without addressing our current situation, we will

be unable to sustain a viable organization. Some items have been addressed but there is much more to review. Although I will not be the State President, I remain on the State Council as the Immediate Past President and I will continue to bring forth what is in the best interest of the membership.

I ask that as you send your delegates to the State Conven-tion, you talk to them and urge them to read the reports, the budget, and review the fi nan-cials in order to be as informed as possible for a Convention that will affect how we move into the future.

This is your organization. Without you and your support it defaults to only a few to do what is needed. This is your call to action to ensure that the Sons of Italy stays strong and on the right course for future generations. We want people who are honest, focused on what is best for the Order, and willing to work for the good of every member.

I wish you all an enjoyable, healthy summer with your fam-ily and friends.

mente finito e abbiamo ilsole, caldo giorno mentre scrivo il mio ultimo messaggio a voi come presidente dello Stato della Gran Loggia del Massachusetts.

E ‘stato un privilegio che ti rappresenti nel corso degli ultimi due anni . Andando a incontri lodge fi liali ed eventi, e parlare con te a funzioni di Grand Lodge è stato quello che veramente mi ha tenuto concen-trato e impegnato a fare quello che credo è nel migliore inter-esse dei membri in generale. Negli ultimi due anni sono stato intento a comprendere la relazione di fondo tra le quattro entità che compongono la Gran Loggia e rendendoli più effi cace ed effi ciente possibile.

Durante il mio mandato, il Consiglio ha riesaminato il nu-mero di eventi della Gran Loggia corse, e si concentrò su quegli eventi che hanno dimostrato il meglio di ciò che facciamo e evi-denziati i contributi positivi della comunità Italiana-Americana. Gli eventi sono stati meravigliosi successi e non sottolineano il nostro quadro fi nanziario. Abbi-amo aggiunto più social media, internet, e le comunicazioni di posta elettronica al fi ne di ot-tenere il nostro messaggio, pur mantenendo il nostro impegno

per i nostri membri di alto livello con il giornale stampa.

Un progetto che non sarà completato fi no a dopo la Con-venzione di Stato è la pubblica-zione del libro che descrive i pri-mi 100 anni della Gran Loggia del Massachusetts. Ho visto la copertina e un progetto del libro e sembra favoloso. Ogni Lodge è stato chiesto di presentare le immagini e Anthony Sammarco ha implementato quelle che meglio rappresentano il nostro Ordine. Una volta che il libro è pubblicato e disponibile per la vendita, chiedo ai nostri Filial Alberghi a acquistare diverse copie di donare ai loro biblio-teche locali. Ciò consentirà una opportunità di pubbliche re-lazioni nel vostro giornale locale e di garantire che le generazioni future avranno una risorsa che rappresenta gli italo-americani e dei Figli d’Italia in modo giusto ed equo.

Che cosa è diventato chiaro per me come io ho speso una grande quantità di tempo e fatica a lavorare per conto dell’Ordine è che abbiamo bi-sogno di rivedere seriamente come operiamo, la struttura della Gran Loggia, i suoi funzi-onari, commissari, e il benefi cio Commissione Insurance. Se continuiamo a mantenere la rotta siamo stati per più di 40 anni senza affrontare la nostra

situazione attuale, non saremo in grado di sostenere una orga-nizzazione valida. Alcuni oggetti sono stati affrontati, ma c’è molto di più da rivedere. Anche se io non sarò il Presidente della Repubblica, rimango al Consi-glio di Stato come l’Immediato Past Presidente e continuerò a portare avanti ciò che è nel migliore interesse dei soci.

Vi chiedo come si invia i vostri delegati alla Convenzi-one di Stato, si parla con loro e spingerli a leggere le relazioni, il bilancio, e rivedere i dati fi nan-ziari, al fi ne di essere informati come possibile per una Conven-zione che interesseranno come ci muoviamo in il futuro.

Questa è la vostra organiz-zazione. Senza di voi e il vostro sostegno il valore predefi nito è solo pochi di fare ciò che è necessario. Questo è l’invito all’azione per garantire che i Figli d’Italia rimane forte e sulla strada giusta per le generazioni future. Vogliamo che le persone che sono oneste, si è con-centrata su ciò che è meglio per l’Ordine, e la volontà di lavorare per il bene di ogni utente.

Nicholas Piccioli will be at-tending the College of the Holy Cross with a major in Biol-ogy/Health Sciences. He is a member of the National Honor Society, Jazz Band, Student Council, the wrestling team for four years, the football and unified track teams for two years, and the cross country

team for one year. Nicholas is the recipient of academic awards for Spanish, English, and Physical Education. He organized the Stow Gobbler Road Race for two years, which raised $33,000 for two chari-ties, and spent two weeks in Malawi assisting doctors treat-ing patients with malaria, HIV/AIDS, and traumatic injuries, observed surgeries, and set up three clinics. He works as a life-guard and camp leader at YMCA Camp Belknap, volunteers at the Cor Unum Food Center, and plays the guitar, trumpet, and completing multiple Crossfit competitions and the Spartan Race at Fenway.

JOHN SAPORITO -LUIGI FIATO AWARD

Kassandra Varney plans to attend the University of New Hampshire with a major in Oc-cupational Therapy and a minor in Deaf Studies. She is the Na-tional Honor Society Secretary, is a member of the Spanish Honor Society and Drama Club, and loves to dance. She is the recipient of the 2014 Saint Michael’s College Book Award, and the AP Scholar Award with Honors. Kassandra volunteers with the Centerville Public Li-brary Shell-vers and Our Lady of Victory Parish, and works for Katie’s Homemade Ice Cream and Mass Bay Co.

JOSEPH T. ZOTTOLI - VINCENT BROGNA AWARDNicholas Guerini will be

attending Wentworth Institute of Technology to major in Con-struction Management and mi-nor in Business. He is a member of the National Honor Society,

Peer Leadership, Landscape Club, Agricultural Mechan-ics Club, Future Farmers of America, and participated in Tractor Driving and Hardscape Career Development Events. He is the recipient of the Golf “Fore Award” and the Leader-ship Award, and was the MVP, Mayfl ower League All-Star, and Mayfl ower Athletic Conference All Star as a member of the golf team. Nicholas volunteers at the Magical Moon Foundation and Brockton VA Hospital, and works at Guerini Landscape and Design, Alumni Sports Café, and Black Rock Country Club.

FELIX FORTE -MICHAEL A. FREDO AWARD

Caitlin Nicole O. Bugash will attend UMass Amherst to major in Physics. She is a fl ut-ist in the concert and marching bands, a cellist in the Rhode Island Philharmonic Youth Or-chestra String Orchestra, and participates in the fl ute choir. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Key Club, and Academic Decathlon. Caitlin is the recipient of an AP Scholar Award, an Honorable Mention at the MA Region III Science Fair, Gold Medal for Music in Academic Decathlon competi-tion, and Maxima cum Laude on the National Latin Exam. She volunteers for the Walk for Literacy, Relay for Life, the Help the Homeless Drive, Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF, Men with Taste, makes Thanksgiving baskets, collects toys for Toy Drives, and plays the fl ute at nursing homes.

JOSEPH GORRASI -ANTHONY JULIAN AWARDAdriana McDevitt will at-

tend the College of William and Mary to major in Linguistics/Languages. She is a member of the National Honor Society and the French National Honor So-ciety. She plays varsity soccer, winter track, and spring track, JV soccer, and was captain of the varsity soccer and winter track teams her senior year. Adriana volunteers as a youth soccer coach, and for the New England Student Leadership Conference, Braintree Little League Baseball, Kick and Treat BYS, Paralympics, St. Claire’s Church, Relay for Life, and the Don Orione and North End Nursing Homes. She works for Bertucci’s, Braintree Youth Soc-cer as the Head Girl’s Referee, as a camp counselor, snack bar attendant, and babysitter. Adriana sings with a concert choir and sang with the Atlantic Symphony Orchestra.

JOSEPH B. SILVERIO - JOHN GUARINO AWARDJoseph Tramontozzi plans

to attend Tufts University to major in Environmental Sci-ences and minor in Italian. He is President of the World Science

Club and Model United Nations, and received excellence awards in biology, chemistry, Span-ish, and pre-calculus. He is a member of the National Honor Society, Math League, Red Cross Club, and Academic De-cathlon, and the JV track and fi eld, soccer, and tennis teams. He is the captain of the WGBH High School Quiz Show, State Tournament Science Olympiad Team, and Lifesmarts Team. Joseph volunteers as a tutor, soccer referee, and for the North Reading Dollars for Schol-ars Phone-a-thon, Relay for Life, and St. Theresa Religious Education Summer Camp. He volunteered 108 hours with an environmental engineering student doing research at Tufts University regarding pharma-ceuticals in wastewater.

Andrew Longo is planning to attend Saint Anselm College to major in Business and minor in Sports Studies. He participated in AP Computer Science and earned a spot on the Honor Roll. He has been a member of the lacrosse and golf teams for three years, as well as the rugby team and ski club, and was the recipient of the La-crosse Unsung Hero Award for two years. Andrew volunteers for Christmas in the City, the Fourth of July Parade Com-mittee, and the Deutsche Bank Golf Championship. He works as a caddie at the Black Rock Country Club, waiter at Linden Ponds Living Community, and in outdoor service at the Boston Golf Club.

Patrick Marum will attend UMass Amherst to major in Humanities and Fine Arts Ex-ploratory Track and minor in Education. He plays trumpet and is a member of the Palmer High School Marching, Jazz and Concert Bands. He is a recipi-ent of the Sandy Burns Music Award, District Student of the Month, Grandma B Award, and was the Big Y Student of the Month. Patrick plays baseball and golf, and volunteers for the Palmer Music Department Citrus Sale, the Quabbin Valley Music Festival, and the Ameri-can Red Cross Blood Drive. LOUIS W. SALVATORE AWARD

Stephanie Riendeau plans to attend UMass Amherst to major in Sports Management. She is a member of the Na-tional Honor Society and the 2014 Basketball Inter-High All-Tournament Team. She is a varsity soccer, basketball, and softball player, and served as the captain on the soccer and basketball teams her senior year. She volunteers for school community events, Smiles for Sophia, and Dodgeball for Bro-dy. Stephanie plays guitar and violin for her school’s music magnet.

Heat oil in a skillet. Add chopped onion and celery. Simmer until onion is opaque. Remove onion and celery from skillet and place in a bowl. Add eye roast of beef to the skillet and sear all sides to retain juices in the meat. Cut a wide piece of aluminum foil in which to bake the roast. Place foil in roasting pan. Place seared roast in center of aluminum foil, or in a roasting bag. Gently add the oil from skillet. Place chopped onion and celery over the roast. Salt to taste. Cover roasting pan with aluminum foil to fully seal roast and contents (or place in a roasting bag). Bake in 350°F preheated oven for thirty minutes.

Meanwhile, add a beef bouillon to one cup of water and bring to a boil. Stir and turn off burner. Check roast after thirty minutes. Add a small amount of beef bouillon liquid and baste the roast. Cover and continue baking, basting every 15 minutes. Bake to tenderness of beef desired. (Approx. baking time — about 90 minutes.)

He has been married to his wife Sandra for 58 years, and they have three children, fi ve grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Stephen was a teacher for 13 years, vice principal for 22 years, and principal for 3 years. He joined the G. Marconi Lodge #1620 in 1981, and in 1986 attended a conference in Italy, representing the Grand Lodge alongside Past Presidents Charles Perenick and Joseph Giuffrida. He has been active at the Filial, Grand, and Supreme Lodge levels. Stephen has served on the Massachusetts Association of School Committees and the Lee School Committee, and is currently the Chairman of the Lee Council on Aging, a Lee Town Representative (since 1971), and a 20-year board member of the Lee Public Access Station.

On Sunday, April 12, 2015 the Tewksbury Lodge #2872 held a Fundraising Breakfast at the VFW in Tewksbury. Members served a full breakfast, which included pancakes, waffl es, bacon, eggs, sausages, juice, fruit, milk, and coffee,

to approximately 130 people. The event was open to members, their families, and the general public. The breakfast was held to raise funds to support our charitable works and to promote our organization.

Elegant Brunch at the Brain-tree Sons of Italy. Bradbury’s Boutique of Braintree provided the latest in spring fashions and accessories modeled by club members Dorothy and Ruth-ann Berlandi, Andrea Daiute Sweet, Carol Czech, Rosemarie Lauria, Arianna Miller, Linda Kelley-Hayes, and Angela Geso,

as well as State Orator Denise Furnari and Braintree’s first woman Town Council member Shannon Hume, our “Celebrity Model”. Each table had distinc-tive hats from President Marta Googins’ own collection as the centerpiece and the Ele-gant Brunch from Fasano’s Catering featured quiche, Bel-gian waffl es and other tradi-tional breakfast fare. A raffl e table with over 30 prizes com-pleted the afternoon. Profes-sional photographer and former Junior Lodge member Lisa Czech took lots of great photos of models and guests. Proceeds from the event will benefi t club charities.

Tewksbury Lodge #2872 Taste of the Town

On April 1, 2015, Members of the Tewksbury Sons of Italy Lodge #2872 attended a “Taste of the Town” fundraiser event sponsored by the Tewksbury Rotary

Club and held at the Tewksbury Country Club. At the event attendees were able to sample foods from a variety of local restaurants and cast their votes for

their favorites. Like our organization, the Rotary Club, through its fundraising efforts provides support to many charitable programs.

A fundraiser for Windows of Hope was held at the Marina at the Wharf in Revere on April 19, 2015. The Tewksbury Lodge #2872 donated $500 to the cancer support orga-nization, which is located at Beth Israel Deaconess Medi-cal Center. Windows of Hope provides for the needs of those battling any form of cancer, regardless of insurance cov-erage. Patients can obtain wigs, hats, prostheses, books, tapes, skin care items, and clothing, as well as counsel-ing and any other services or items needed.

Two of our lodge members, Paula and Charles Coppola, generously donated their time to serve on the fundrais-ing committee. Overall, more than $12,000 was raised for Windows of Hope.

Members from the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts actively participated in the Installation of Officers at the Winthrop Mixed Lodge #2057 meeting on April 28, 2015. State Past President Kevin Caira and John Saladino acted as Assistant Heralds and State Deputy Matt Ezekiel acted as Herald. State Immediate Past President and Nat iona l Record ing Secretary James DiStefano gave a resounding keynote speech about OSIA founder Dr. Vincenzo Sellaro’s “I have a dream ...” speech of June 22, 1905, as well as OSIA history. The Lodge certainly appreciated Grand Lodge’s presence and excellent assistance.

After serving for 6 years as President of the Lodge, Joseph Boncore is turning the Pres-ident’s gavel over to Kathi Young. Kathi has been a Lodge member since 2007, serving fi rst as Recording Secretary and then as Vice President. Joseph Boncore explained that his work on the Winthrop Housing Authority is his passion, and he also serves as Chairman of the Winthrop Ordinance Review Committee. At the state

On May 6, 2015, the Law-rence Ladies Lodge #2026 held its Installation of Offi cers, as well as a Scholarship Recep-tion, at an impressive ceremony which took place at DiBurro’s Function Hall in Bradford.

State Recording Secretary Ma-rie Jackson conducted the installation with State Deputy Lucinda Nolet who served as Herald. The Lodge was ap-plauded for its enthusiasm and involvement. Returning Presi-

dent Adeline Lavigne thanked outgoing Recording Secretary Rose Paolino for her 12 years of dedicated service to the Lodge, and presented her with fl owers.

The Lodge, through its chari-table trust, the Service Center

of Greater Lawrence, presented three Josephine I. Rizzo Schol-arships, named after one of the founders of the Lodge. Jose-phine Paolino, who serves as Chairperson of the scholarship committee, thanked members

Ruth Giordano, Rose Paolino, and Theresa Petralia for their effort and assistance.

The recipients of these $1,500 scholarships attend local high schools and have excellent academic records, compete and show leadership in sports, and demonstrate a high level of com-munity involvement. This year, the recipients were Kayleigh Forgetta, Abbey Myers, and Kyle Whittaker.

Kay le igh , who a t tends Methuen High School, is the daughter of Anthony Forgetta. She will be attending the Uni-versity of Massachusetts - Lowell in the fall majoring in Criminal Justice. Abbey, who attends Pre-sentation of Mary Academy, lives in Methuen with her mother, Deborah Myers. She will be at-tending Emmanuel College ma-joring in Biology. Kyle, the son of John and Joanne Whittaker, attends Methuen High School. He will be attending Worcester Polytechnic Institute majoring in Electrical Engineering.

funds for the many charities they support at the local, state, and national level. They thank everyone who came out to support them.

For over 11 years, Richard Honan, founder of Winthrop’s “Support the Troops” project, has been preparing and sending wonderful care packages to our military men and women who serve and defend our freedoms. The Winthrop Ladies Lodge #2071 was honored to participate by donating items and funds to support this worthwhile project, which offers soldiers a loving touch from home.

The Lodge is also in the process of planning their Scholarship Awards Luncheon, as well as a fundraiser at the Winthrop Farmers Market to fund their annual Thanksgiving dinner baskets.
