Intern Choosing what to do with your vacation can have a significant impact on your future. Whether you've finalized your career path or not, participating in a summer internship program will move you forward in many ways towards a viable and meaningful future. Summer internships for high school students are designed to provide valuable on-the-job experience for young people who are just starting to explore
career options. These programs can be a fun and exciting first step toward furthering your education and figuring out what direction you want to take in life.
Applying for, participating in, and completing a summer internship as a high school student will give you the confidence and skills you need to understand the world of the "job search." It will allow you to explore a wide variety of career options including marketing, design, nursing, accounting, or something else. It will propel you into the world of networking. And it will give you an impressive entry for your resume—the same resume that will potentially help you land your first big job after college.
Get involved and donate some of your time to volunteering! Community service is another great way to gain some valuable work and leadership experience. Nonprofits such as soup kitchens and animal shelters are always looking for volunteers, so it should not be difficult to find a volunteer organization near you that could use an extra pair of hands for a few hours a week during the summer. Travel
While this may not be a viable option for everyone, summer travel can be an exciting way to enrich your mind while enhancing your resume. Visiting and exploring foreign places will broaden your horizons, allowing you to expand your awareness of other peoples and cultures. It is also a great chance to develop language skills. Even if you cannot visit foreign
places, take time to explore local sites and museums. Take a unique teen adventure trip with students from all over the world, such as:

Sophomores:

Study for final exams. Keep those grades high.
Start creating a list of colleges that interest you and you may want to attend.

Juniors:
Four-year, college-bound students should plan to take the ACT and/or SAT the end of your junior year. Deadlines for the June college entrance exams are in early May. Don’t forget SAT Subject Tests required by highly selective colleges. Don’t incur late fees...register EARLY!
Take your AP exams and study for finals.
Refine your target list of schools and be sure it covers a range of safety to reach schools.

Athletes, register with the NCAA Eligibility Center at www.eligibilitycenter.org and use Core Course GPA to calculate your GPA and ACT/SAT test scores needed for Division I and II collegiate sports. Complete your senior survey and turn in documentation to make sure you are included in the graduation program. A final transcript will be sent to your selected college. If you are attending a four-year college, a letter of acceptance must be submitted to the Career Center. You also must submit copies of any financial aid you receive (scholarships, awards, grants, etc.) and/or copies of your military commitments.
Withdraw your applications from colleges you are not attending.
Send thank you notes to those who helped you in your college application process.
Most four-year colleges must be notified by May 1 of your intent to accept admissions and enroll. Pay attention to housing and meal plan information.
Study for your finals and APs!
Freshmen, Sophomores, & Juniors – If you are planning to take AP and Honors Classes in the
Fall remember to check for summer reading assignments! These assignments are part of your 1st
quarter grade in the Fall. No slacking!
Juniors - If you are planning to apply to 4-year colleges, you should register to take either the ACT or
the SAT in June/July. Deadlines to register for the June tests are in May!!! ACT also offers a test date
in July. If you miss those dates, the next tests you can register for are August/September!!!
Juniors - If you are planning to go to a 2-year college, trade or technical school you may not need to
take the ACT or SAT. Look for more information in the September Newsletter this Fall!
Seniors – Make sure you are not missing important information from your college! Know when and
where to take your college placement exam! PAY ATTENTION TO DEADLINES!
Ideally, touring the college campuses you are considering is the best way to
find out if a college is for you. However, just because you may want to
attend a school out of state does not mean you have to spring for plane
tickets to every university on your Top 10 list. To help whittle down the
choices, take a virtual tour at www.campustours.com or
www.ecampustours.com to get started. Many of the college websites also
provide a virtual tour of their campus….be sure to check it out!
Students have the opportunity to participate in a virtual college fair by going to
www.collegefairsonline.com. Go to the student link on the website in order to
register for the virtual college fair. During the fair you can log on and search
through all the colleges represented. Each booth will include information about
the school and offer a chat time to talk with school representatives. You can also
chat with college representatives at www.collegeweeklive.com.
This website provides a wealth of information for students. Students are able to take Interest and Skills Assessments, look at Career Profiles, watch Multimedia Interviews, research College and Financial Aid Information, save items to the Electronic Career Portfolio and create a resume using the Resume Builder. REVISED PLACEMENT PROCEDURES FOR UPCOMING SCHOOL YEAR
CSM has revised their placement procedures for incoming students. Since placement testing will not be available throughout the summer, students
can place using any combination of the following:
High School Transcript Review: CSM can use students' transcripts/GPA for placement
even though transcripts are incomplete for their senior year. Students should arrange to have their transcripts sent to [email protected] for evaluation. Upon evaluation, an enrollment coordinator will create a course sequence and contact the student.
SAT/ACT Scores: Students may now send their downloaded PDF score report from
their SAT/ACT exams directly to [email protected]. Enrollment coordinators receive a list of students who submit scores will plan their courses and contact the students.
If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Mary Prather, CSM Enrollment Coordinator, at [email protected] or by calling 301-934-7862. You may also contact the CSM Call Center at [email protected] or by calling 301-934-2251 option 0. The CSM staff are working remotely and can be contacted using the information listed above.

The staff at the College of Southern Maryland is continuing to work remotely and are available to assist students with enrollment and answer questions. JUNIORS: It is time to register for the NCAA Eligibility Center if you plan to participate in Division I or Division II level of play in college. Visit www.eligibilitycenter.org to register with a credit card. If you are a student receiving free or reduced lunch or participate in federal trio programs, ask your counselor about fee waivers.
1. Ask your counselor to send your transcript to the NCAA Eligibility Center at the end of your junior year.
2. Take the ACT or SAT and use the code “9999” to have your official scores sent directly to the NCAA
Eligibility Center.
3. Check with your counselor to make sure you are on track to graduate on time with your class and have

Charles County Government Summer Internships
Charles County Government has internship opportunities available for students through their
Summer Internship Program. There are 16 intern positions posted on their website that are open to

FBI BALTIMORE FIELD OFFICE – BALTIMORE TEEN ACADEMY: FBI Baltimore is currently accepting applications for its 2020 Teen Academy, which is open to high school students ages 16 – 18 (juniors/seniors). This program allows high school students an opportunity to get a comprehensive look into today’s FBI during a six-to-eight-hour block of instruction and demonstrations at the field office. Students are provided with several presentations on topics, including terrorism, cyber, public corruption, polygraph exams, evidence response, SWAT, and the day-to-day operation of a typical FBI office.
The Teen Academy will be held July 15 to July 17, 2020 from 7:45 AM to 4:00 PM. Applications must be received by 5:00 PM on Friday, May 15, 2020.

Coalition for Access, Affordability, and Success:
This is an online college application system which allows high school students, grades 9-12, to set up an
account and begin learning about the application and financial aid processes. The platform provides a single,
centralized toolkit for students to organize, build, and refine their applications. There are three main features:
• Virtual Locker – Students can collect and store information that may be useful when they apply
such as academic documents, essays, written work, extracurricular activities, videos, photos, visual
arts/music, etc.
• Collaboration Platform – The teachers, counselors, employers, and mentors who are
supporting the student’s college search and application can offer feedback.
• Application Portal – Students select the information from their Virtual Locker that they wish to
include with their application to Coalition member universities.
There are over 90 public and private universities across the U.S. that comprise the Coalition for Access,
Affordability, and Success.
The University of Maryland, College Park will use the application provided by the Coalition for Access,
Affordability, and Success beginning in mid-August 2017 for students seeking freshman admission to the
university.

PSAT/NMSQT Practice & Score Report Resources: This is a FREE Career and College Resource from College Board. Students (9th, 10th, 11th grade) have the opportunity to take the PSAT/NMSQT in October. Students can practice for the PSAT/NMSQT by clicking on https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/psat-nmsqt-psat-10/practice. Students who took the test received their PSAT/NMSQT Score Reports from their counselors in December/January. Students who did not receive their score report, should see their counselors. The score reports will contain an access code
that the students will need to enter on the College Board website in order to see their PSAT/NMSQT scores. Once the students receive their score report, they should visit https://studentscores.collegeboard.org to learn more about what their scores mean. If they have an account with College Board, they can sign in with their Username and Password; if they don’t have an account, they will need to create a Student Account at www.collegeboard.org. Using their score report, they will learn how ready they are for college, explore which
AP courses are a good match for them, and get insight into which skills to focus on in order to prepare for the SAT. They can also link their College Board and Khan Academy accounts to access FREE, personalized SAT

GI Transferability Bill Post 9/11 GI Bill family transfer option allows service members to shift their benefits to their families.
