Sorry guys, I didn't mean to stir up a donnybrook. I have had alcoholism in my family for decades and it's always tragic including the death of my baby cousin onChristmas day last year. Chemical dependency is never funny IMHO, and even less so for the user. I doubt Harry would find it "hysterical". Think of all the giantslost to addiction, Bird ,Fats...I should not have brought it up. No harm intended.

Hey valleyhornman. Welcome to the forum. It looks like you're pretty new here. Don't sweat it too much. You don't owe anyone an apology for expressing anhonest opinion, and not everyone finds the same things funny. To be honest, I think it's quite obviously a cigarette in that photo, but I understand why thereputations of certain musicians drive commentary. And, if we dish it out, we should all be ready to take some backwash. Keep on posting.

Hey kmamf, Valley has been around for a few years... just doesn't post much. I very much respect his thoughts. In any case, BM's light-hearted post about HJ's cupwas totally in character for James, whom we all know was a fan of women and alcohol. He even promoted it on this album cover (which I've finally been able toupload). That doesn't make it any less sad, and I do feel for Valley and his family.
Anyway, what the heck is a donnybrook?

Thanks for the cartoon Eric, I had a great laugh. That pic brings back memories of a Buddy Rich concert back in the mid 70's at Rolling Meadows HS in Illinois. My friend and I decided to hang around after the concert to meet some of the musicians,I think Lin Biviano was on the band at that time. I remember helping out and carrying some of the equipment back to the bus.The bus driver had the door open toallow the musicians to board and all of a sudden the sweet smell of pot was flowing out of the band bus, the smoke was so thick you could cut it with a knife.I remember talking to one of Maynard's alumni about Buddy's bus and he told me Maynard had a very strict policy about smoking and drinking at the high schools.

That's the book Mayn69 -- I recommend everyone read it if you haven't. It focuses more on Harry's personal decline than on his actual playing - but it certainly is awindow into his conflicted soul.
Equipment: Greg Black made John Blount Personal model mouthpiece, Callet Jazz 63xx trumpet --- played at a mediocre comeback level for 30 full minutes permonth...Favorite Maynard Tunes: Gospel John, all the other ones

The dates on the Stolen Moments notes on the Harry and Miles pics were inaccurate. It was the 1965 Monterrey Jazz Festival. Red Kelly and Jack Perciful who wereon Harry's band told me stories about it. The book "Trumpet Blues" details the antics of Harry, Dizzy and Miles both on and off stage.

This is from a bootleg of the '65 gig.

are we sure that's a cigarette? :-)
Is it really safe to have an open flame that close to Harry's cup?
Between your comment and Eric M's comment/picture I had to put down my horn for a good, loud laugh. Great way to start my practice day, thanks hahaha.

You should have heard this concert in person. I was 18 at the time and recorded this on a cheap little cassette recorder. Harry played the lead parts from thetrumpet section with no microphone.
