Issue : 92 17 August, 2019

Efficiency should be the hall markThe state of public transport system is a barometer indicating

extent of development of a city. If one goes by this definition, theimage of Navi Mumbai that emerges out is extremely dishearten-

ing considering the deplorable state of NMMT, the public trans-port service provider in Navi Mumbai. The quantity of service is

hugely deficient and the quality is abysmally poor. Not only this, tariffs have also become unaffordable. Still they are being patron-

ized by local people, not out of choice but out of compulsion, asdemand is disproportionately more than the supply.

The public transport modes in Navi Mumbai- whether NMMT,

BEST, ST or local trains- none have expanded proportionately tothe increase in demand on account of large scale development in

Navi Mumbai during the last decade. A major fallout of this lack ofvision is increased number of personalized and hired modes of

transportation, which itself has its adverse effects. The traffic den-sity and traffic volumes have increased tremendously without cor-

responding increase in arterial infrastructure and therefore thetransport system is literally creaking under pressure. There is an

increase in traffic jams and more recently, the availability of park-ing spaces has reduced drastically especially during peak hours.

The environment is also victim as huge amount of exhaust is be-ing released by the increased volumes of vehicles. Another major

impact of increased volume and density of vehicles is increase intraffic indiscipline and consequent accidents.

Unfortunately NMMT has not fared well on the expectations ofthe residents of Navi Mumbai. This is particularly unfortunate as agood public transport system contributes a lot by way of providing

cheaper transport, reduction in vehicle population and consequentreduction in traffic congestion and accidents and last but not the

least in preserving the environment. It can also solve the problemof parking space. Because of its poor vision and improper man-

agement, NMMT is grossly deficient in quality and quantity ofservice. Many of the nodes of Navi Mumbai are not being catered

to and frequency is erratic and the service is absolutely unreli-able. To set the things right, there are intermittent talks of priva-

tizing the organisation, but unfortunately in most of the cities andcountries, the public transport is the responsibility of the State.

More investment needs to be made by the State in this sector, ifthese services have to be made efficient with an aim to cater the

increased demand. Also, improved NMMT shall not only compli-ment the services being provided by railways, BEST and ST, but

shall also become the indicator of development of the city of NaviMumbai.

Let us respect the dignityof our National Flag

By Vinod

Chandrashekhar Dixit

In India, duringIndependence Day &Republic day there is anew trend of sellingflags made of paperand plastic. Ahead ofIndependence Day, theCentre has urged allcitizens not to usenational flag made upof plastic and askedstates and UnionTerritories to ensurestrict compliance ofthe flag code.

It is seen thatpeople enthusiasticallybuy National flags injust Rs 5 but the verynext day, we find it onthe road sides steppingand stamping. OurPM Narendra Modihas already called forwide publicity andsensitisation of Centraland state departmentsas well as the public tostrictly use “paperflags” instead of plasticflags and ensure thatnational flags aredisposed in ways thatare consistent with the“dignity of the flag”.

Millions of patriotshave laid their lives toachieve freedom andour National Flag is asymbol of their greatsacrifice. Every trueIndian knows theimportance of this flagand would make surethat it continues tosway freely always. Our national flag iscourage and inspira-tion for us. It makesus remember aboutthe sacrifices of ourgreat Indian freedomfighters. It makes usremember that howtough that momentwas for them. Gettingfreedom was not soeasy. We shouldalways respect our flagand never let it godown for our mother-land. Many sacrificedtheir life to save thehonour of the Flag bynot allowing it to falldown on the ground.Unfortunately peoplehave forgotten tomaintain the honour ofthe Nation. Abuse ofnational flags takesplace on Independence

Day and Republic Day,due to use of plasticflags. National flag isused by people inevery corner, everycrossroad, every shop, and every vehicle. Some proudly place bypinning up on theclothes. But it ispainful to see ournational flag in gar-bage the very nextday. The feelings ofpatriotism and loyaltyto a country areentrenched in theminds of individualsright from the timethey start going toschool. While eachchild enjoys carrying apaper flag onthe independence andrepublic day, parentsmust be very watchfulin ensuring that theflag is treated withrespect.

The plastic or paperFlags that are held inthe hand on the‘Independence Day’ and‘Republic Day’ withgreat honour and loveduring the flag hoist-ing ceremony, are seenlying on the streets, drains, filthy places inthe afternoon of thesame Day itself. Is thisnot an insult to thebold patriots whosuffered bullets of theBritish and the Portu-guese on their chest tosave the honour of theFlag? According toSection 2 of ‘ThePrevention of insults toNational Honour Act,1971’ – Whoever in anypublic place or in anyother place withinpublic view burns, mutilates, defaces, defiles, disfigures, destroys, tramplesupon or otherwiseshows disrespect to orbrings into contempt(whether by words, either spoken orwritten, or by acts) theIndian National Flagor any part thereof, shall be punished withimprisonment for aterm which mayextend to three years,or with fine, or withboth. There have beencomplaints that afterRepublic Day and

Independence Day,flags made of plasticare often found lying onroads and gutters. It isobserved that paperand plastic nationalflags are found strewnall over roads and evenin gutters right from26th January and ittakes time to dispose ofplastic flags.

Our national flag isused in festoons. Afterall the celebrations, people just leave themthere. The flags fall tothe ground and arestepped on. Plasticflags are preferred bymany political partiesfor the election cam-paign. The Model Codeof Conduct bans thedisplay of any bannersor flags in publicplaces.

We must uphold itsdignity even if it is atthe cost of ourlives. Showing respectfor National Flag is asymbol for the moralvalues of the citizens ofthe country. Don’t wethink like the nationalanthem and pledge areprinted in schooltextbooks, a messageabout national flagscan also be printed,Our national flagshould not be used as afestoon, rosette orbunting or in anymanner for decoration. It should be hoisted onimportant national, cultural and sportsevents. We shouldabstain from buying apaper or plastic flag.

The paper flagsshould not be thrownon the ground ordiscarded after theevent and should bedisposed of in privacywith the dignity of theflag. Efforts should bemade to educate, andspread awareness tothe people of thecountry throughadvertising, in printand electronic media,so that the properusage and dignity ofnational flag shouldnot suffer in anymanner,

Fast forward measuresby PM Modi

PM Modi means business and he revealed whatis in his mind on 73rd Independence day from RedFort. It is notable that a Chief of Defence staff isto be posted keeping the security of the country as first and foremost ofin present day political unrest in the world. Moreover, PM gives an indi-cation of things to come in better shape in the next couple of years. Inall, the Prime Minister is having a vision for development on all fieldsand it is a good sign of what lies ahead in his agenda in NDA 2.0 term.Fast forward measures are by far the best.

Narendra Modi - most popularand valuable PM: Survey

The popularity of Narendra Modi stands unrivalled, the latest Moodof the Nation survey shows. Working round the clock and working forthe people’s welfare scheme all-round the year made Modi the most pop-ular and valuable Prime Minister since independence. He came, sawand conquered the people of the country with his dynamic way of func-tioning and made his ministry also work wonders in the first five yearsof NDA rule. His cabinet of ministers had high regards for him andduring his absence on foreign tours, the second line of ministers tookcontrol and made the matter more easy for Modi.

The Mood of the Nation is pretty clear: Narendra Modi is miles aheadof his contemporaries and stands on the cusp of going down in history asone of India’s strongest political leaders. PM Modi’s approval ratingscurrently stand at 71 per cent, a sharp rise compared to the 54 per centapproval he enjoyed in the January 2019 edition of the Mood of the Na-tion. If elections were held today, Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya JanataParty would once again emerge victorious. The findings of the Mood ofthe Nation poll show that the BJP would win 308 seats — five morethan what the party won in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls — while the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) would win 357.

The country is firmly behind Narendra Modi whose popularity as aleader stands unrivalled in recent times. In fact, Narendra Modi’s ‘strongleader’ image was the primary driving force behind the Bharatiya Jan-ata Party’s staggering victory in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. And, if elec-tions were to be held again today, the BJP would not only win but wouldimprove on the tally it registered in the Lok Sabha polls, the results ofwhich were declared in May. All this, according to the August edition ofthe Mood of the Nation poll. The bi-annual survey was conducted across97 parliamentary constituencies and 194 assembly constituencies in 19states. A total of 12,126 interviews were conducted between July 22,2019 and July 30, 2019 to gauge the nation’s mood.

In academic discussions, PM Modi has often been compared to Mrs.Indira Gandhi and the debate is often inconclusive. But the Mood of theNation leaves no room for doubt. Modi is far ahead with 37% of theinterviewers and that is great. Indira Gandhi follows in the second spotwith 14% of the interviewers prefer her followed by Atal Behari Vajpayeewith 11%. Manmohan Singh is a straggler in the seventh position. IfModi is most popular among the Prime Ministers, Yogi Adityanath hasunceremoniously removed Mamata Banerjee as the best Chief Minister. It was notable that Mamata, who was ranked No.1 in the January edi-tion of the Mood of the Nation has lost steam and been relegated to theseventh spot.

If the mood of the nation poll conducted recently is to be taken at facevalue PM Narendra Modi, by far the best and is way ahead of his prede-cessors. Modi means business and he revealed in better terms by theinterviewers. For more than 20% felt that a corruption free regime hasbeen the single biggest achievement of the Modi government. This fol-lowed by a crackdown on black money, demonetisation and improvedinfrastructure all added to the plus point in addition. A tough stand onterror and the roll out of the Goods and Services Tax regime also rankhigh on the list of the Modi government’s achievements. PM Modi is agem of the nation and we can proudly hold our head high in the world inthe days to come.

In this article, Iwould like to talk aboutwhat a Homeopathneeds to know to be ableto help the patient inthe best manner possi-ble. When a person fallsill, whether it is anacute or a chronic con-dition, the homeopathunderstands that it isprimarily the defencemechanism that haslost its balance, to alesser or greater extent. The role of the homeo-path is to restore thisbalance with the help ofsuitable energies of ho-meopathic remedies.Homeopathy being aform of energy medi-cine, the frequency ofthe homeopathic medi-cine has to be matchedwith the frequency ofthe patient. For thismatching, some detailsare required. Many pa-tients come to a Homeo-path with a ready diag-nosis of the disease ob-tained from an earlierdoctor and expect thatonce they have giventhe diagnosis to theHomeopath, the Ho-meopathic doctorshould be able to pre-scribe the requiredmedicine.

For Homeopaths, adiagnosis is importantonly from the point ofview of differentiatingpeculiar symptomscharacteristic to theindividual patient, fromgeneral symptoms, which belong to the dis-ease diagnosis. It is ofno use if you tell thehomeopath that youhave a cold/diarrhoea/headache, if you don’tgive details of those is-sues. For treatment ofan acute problem –something that hascome up suddenly andhas existed only a shorttime, eg., most infec-

What a Homeopath needs to knowtions, diarrhoea, foodpoisoning, etc., the ho-meopath will not needto take a detailed histo-ry. Only the details ofthe problem the patientis suffering from, areneeded. Yes, those elab-orations are needed, butnothing much else. Thehomeopath does notneed the backgroundemotional, mental andphysical characteristicsthat would be needed inthe treatment of achronic condition. Ingeneral, people go to ahomeopath for chronicissues - they are puzzledwhen a homeopathtakes a detailed histo-ry and asks questionsthat the patient feelshas nothing to do withthe problem he hascome with.

The proper historytaking that a classicalhomeopath does wouldlast about 1 or 1.5hours. This history tak-ing would involve ques-tions about the person’spersonal and familymedical history (toknow disease patternsand predispositionswithin the family),questions about the per-son’s mental (thinkingprocesses, memory, comprehension, etc.),emotional (feelings andemotional states) andphysical characteristics(sleep, appetite, thirst, bowel movements, re-sponses to weather, etc.) Possible causativefactors are inquiredinto, as they play animportant role in un-derstanding why theperson’s defence mech-anism has shifted out ofbalance to cause theproblem in the firstplace. It is importantfor patients to realize, esp. in the treatment ofa chronic condition thatthe Homeopathic pre-scription which reallyhelps the patient themost, is one based onthe peculiar symptomsof the individual pa-tient, which as a rule, have no direct connec-tion with the diagnoseddisease. Hence any-thing peculiar, queer, rare and strange thatthe patient has ob-

served (which we call P,Q, R, S symptoms inHomeopathy) needs tobe told to the Homeo-path.

Many people refrainfrom talking aboutthese symptoms, eitherfrom embarrassment orfrom the idea that thesesymptoms have nothingto do with their maincomplaint and theywant the doctor to focusonly on the main com-plaint. This results inthe Homeopath know-ing only part of the prob-lem and makes medi-cine selection more dif-ficult and usually inac-curate as well. Patientsmust remember thatthe Homeopathic doc-tor, unlike a conven-tional doctor, is treatingthe WHOLE PATIENT,and not just the PARTthat is ill; hence any-thing which the patientperceives as ‘not al-right’ is important fromthe point of view of theHomeopath, eventhough it may have nological connection to themain problem whichthe patient seeks treat-ment for. It is thesevery ‘weird’ symptomsthat can lead the Ho-meopath to a highlysuccessful prescriptionand rapid cure of theillness. Patients alsoneed to be very obser-vant about their symp-toms and what theysuffer from. Homeo-paths need a lot of de-tail about everythingthat troubles a patient. For example, if the pa-tient is complaining ofbackache, the Homeo-path needs to know theexact location of thepain, the type of pain, whether the pain radi-ates to another loca-tion, the factors thatincrease the pains andthe factors that giverelief, and also any oth-er symptoms that ac-company the pain.

The reason why Ho-meopaths need so muchdetail lies in the factthat the effects of Ho-meopathic medicinesare tested on healthyhuman beings, what we

call ‘HomeopathicProving’. Due to theenergy stimulation ofthe Homeopathic med-icine during a proving, provers develop symp-toms (which later whenthe same symptoms are

seen in a patient, thesame medicine is capa-ble of curing on the ba-sis of the Homeopathiclaw), and because hu-man beings have theadvantage of expression(in contrast to animaltesting where onlygross changes in healthcan be noted), thesesymptoms are recorded

in great detail, men-tioning exactly whatthe prover is goingthrough. Hence it isclear, that the morecompletely the com-plaints are described, the more accurate theultimate prescriptionwill be and the quickeris the restoration ofgood health.

In Large NumbersEfficiency should be the hall markThe state of public transport system is a barometer indicating

extent of development of a city. If one goes by this definition, theimage of Navi Mumbai that emerges out is extremely dishearten-ing considering the deplorable state of NMMT, the public trans-port service provider in Navi Mumbai. The quantity of service ishugely deficient and the quality is abysmally poor. Not only this, tariffs have also become unaffordable. Still they are being patron-ized by local people, not out of choice but out of compulsion, asdemand is disproportionately more than the supply.

The public transport modes in Navi Mumbai- whether NMMT,BEST, ST or local trains- none have expanded proportionately tothe increase in demand on account of large scale development inNavi Mumbai during the last decade. A major fallout of this lack ofvision is increased number of personalized and hired modes oftransportation, which itself has its adverse effects. The traffic den-sity and traffic volumes have increased tremendously without cor-responding increase in arterial infrastructure and therefore thetransport system is literally creaking under pressure. There is anincrease in traffic jams and more recently, the availability of park-ing spaces has reduced drastically especially during peak hours. The environment is also victim as huge amount of exhaust is be-ing released by the increased volumes of vehicles. Another majorimpact of increased volume and density of vehicles is increase intraffic indiscipline and consequent accidents.

Unfortunately NMMT has not fared well on the expectations ofthe residents of Navi Mumbai. This is particularly unfortunate as agood public transport system contributes a lot by way of providingcheaper transport, reduction in vehicle population and consequentreduction in traffic congestion and accidents and last but not theleast in preserving the environment. It can also solve the problemof parking space. Because of its poor vision and improper man-agement, NMMT is grossly deficient in quality and quantity ofservice. Many of the nodes of Navi Mumbai are not being cateredto and frequency is erratic and the service is absolutely unreli-able. To set the things right, there are intermittent talks of priva-tizing the organisation, but unfortunately in most of the cities andcountries, the public transport is the responsibility of the State.More investment needs to be made by the State in this sector, ifthese services have to be made efficient with an aim to cater theincreased demand. Also, improved NMMT shall not only compli-ment the services being provided by railways, BEST and ST, butshall also become the indicator of development of the city of NaviMumbai.
