School Health Advisory Council

• Every Texas public school district is required by law to have a school health advisory council (SHAC). • A SHAC is a group of individuals representing segments

of the community and school district which provides advice to the district on coordinated school health programming and its impact on student health and learning. • The details of the responsibilities of a SHAC are outlined

in the statue published in the Texas Education Code.

SHAC Requirements

• A parent must serve as a co-chair• A minimum of five members must be appointed to serve

on the SHAC by Board of Trustees. • Majority of members must be parents who are not

employees of the district.• SHAC must meet at least 4 times per year.• SHAC must deliver an annual report to the Board of

Trustees.• SHAC is required to submit recommendations regarding

the districts’ health education curriculum.

• (These are open meetings, everyone is welcomed to join. Meetings are held at the LSK Cafeteria if available, minimum 4 meetings a year.

SHAC Goals• Review student health program for 7th and 8th grade• Review the current Human Sexuality Program• Review District Guidelines for FitnessGRAM• Research and apply for Grant for fresh vegetables and

fruits to be served at breakfast/lunch• Review Rachel’s Challenge program at all campuses• Improve Maypearl on the Move involvement

SHAC Recommendations

• Provide CPR training for students starting at the age 10 up to 18. • Provide CPR training to all Maypearl ISD staff• Provide Diabetes Training to all Maypearl ISD staff

CPR Certification

• Mandatory for all High School Seniors to be CPR Certified before graduating.• It is also offered to High School Sophomores• Goal: Work toward purchasing CPR in Schools Training Kit

Cypress ECG Project

• 1st year paid by the Brandon Goyne Foundation • There will be a screening May 18th for all Jr High and

High School Athletes• After the first year each EKG will be $15 • This program will be offered every year to Jr High and

High School Athletes

• LSK Elementary (40 staff members)• 12 sign up• 7 participated

• Intermediate (20 staff members)• 3 sign up • 3 participated
