Blue skies& sunshineIs it the right time to bu

    the vacation home o

    your dreams?

Roy West with First ChoiceMortgage Team of AmeriProFunding believes the timing is op-

ortune primarily because of lownterest rates creating more buyingower. For example, he said, with

he current rates, homeownersan save almost $400 a monthn interest and principal on a300,000 house compared to justcouple of years ago. The interest

rates have been kept articiallylow to jumpstart the economy, butat some point, will rise again. Itsan election year, West pointedout. The government is going todo everything it can to keep rateslow until after the election. Then,as evidence increases that theeconomy is improving, the rstthing youre going to see is interestrates going up.

The window is open and through it wafts the salty

breeze of ocean air or perhaps a fresh, ower-scent-

ed zephyr from the mountains. Whatever your day-

dream, that window represents the favorable timing

for making your notion of a vacation home a reality.

Though mortgage lendingequirements have tightened, Westaid that the type of clients buyingsecond home dont usually haven issue qualifying. Instead, mak-ng the decision to purchase a vaca-ion home is a condence issue, heaid. Most of the people buyingsecond home dont want to lose

money on their investment, so itsased on their sense of how theconomy is going and the stabilityf the market, he said.

According to a National As-ociation of Realtors (NAR) Marcheport, vacation homes accountedor 11 percent of all transactionsn 2011, only slightly more thanhe previous year. However, the

    median price of vacation homes

ropped 19 percent from 2010. In

ome popular destinations suchs Florida and California, drasticepreciation has created manyargains in vacation properties.

Closer to home, the Bolivar Pen-nsula and Sam Rayburn Lake haveeen aected by weather more

han market conditions. Hurricaneke in 2008 swept much of Boli-ars homes away and perniciousrought conditions have hurt thettractiveness of lake properties.

Anne Willis of Swedes RealEstate in Crystal Beach said thathough 2008 and 2009 were

    wait-and-see years for buyers, the

ast two years have exploded withew construction and remodeling.Beach lovers are beach loversnd some of those who said theydever be back are here again, sheaid. There are still some prettyood deals here, but lumber pricesre picking up again, so prices willkely be going up. She said theverage price of a home at Crystal

Beach now is about $250,000.Beaumont attorney Jason Byrd

urchased a vacation home for hisamily at Crystal Beach last year.We had been looking before Hur-icane Ike, he said. We gured

he market was coming back andwould be stronger. We didnt seehem getting any cheaper. Withhree young children who love theeach, Byrd views the purchase aslifestyle choice more than invest-

ment bargain hunting.Which is the right perspec-

ive, according to Richard Gagne, wealth management advisor in

Beaumont. The primary reason tourchase a vacation home shoulde to satisfy a personal lifestyleoal rather than as an investment,e said. Gagne himself owns aacation home in Cape Cod, Mas-

sachusetts. Its my dream home, and it serves as my emotionalanchor to New England where Imfrom, said Gagne, who has livedin Beaumont for 42 years. Thoughhe rents out the home part of theyear, it still represents a negativecash ow, he said. Vacation homescome with carrying costs, such asinsurance, taxes, property manage-ment fees and maintenance, heexplained. These are costs thatwould not be incurred with a pure

investment, but may be well worthit to have access to a beloved placethat can be a gathering retreat formany years of memories.

Gagne agreed that at this mo-ment, the prospective buyer canget that desired vacation home

    for noticeably less than before.

However, he noted that tourist areaprices tend to be more volatile,so emphasized the importance ofselecting a home for personal userather than market speculation.Though rental income can osetmortgage costs, the rental marketcan be ckle with the economy aswell, he pointed out.

Willis said when gas prices goup, it is good for the Bolivar areabecause of its easy accessibility. The relatively short distance tothe coast makes it very attractiveas a second home market, becausepeople will be able to use it more

frequently and at less cost fortravel, she explained. The sameholds true for the lake area, agreedBrenda Job of Rayburn Realty, whosaid buyer inquiries are picking upthis spring. West said he is seeingan increase in mortgage applica-tions for beach properties. TheNAR report indicates that 35 per-cent of buyers purchased vacationhomes within 100 miles of theirprimary residence.

Chelsea Brandimarte saidher new Crystal Beach home is a55-minute drive from her Beau-mont home, the ideal getaway for

their family of six. The Bran-dimartes bought in February, luredby the aordable price per squarefoot and selection on the market. We did not do it as a nancialinvestment, thats just a gamble, she said. Rather, it represents aninvestment in family time for them. With kids ranging in age from 2 to17, the beach is a popular choice forall and less stressful than travelingvacations. The kids put down thephones and laptops and we are alltogether, she said. We played fourhours of Scrabble the other night something we never do at home. VIP

Texas Marine in Beaumont graciously provided our party boat. It is a 2012 24-foot Yamaha Jet boat 242

Limited S, with a forward swept wakeboard tower to please the sporting enthusiast as well as the boater

searching for that elegant style. For those looking to spend a lot of time on the water, it comes standard with

a head compartment (bathroom). This boat sells for $50,999 plus TT&L. Special thanks to Beaumont Yacht

Club, 620 Marina Street in Beaumont, for hosting our fashion boat party.

Unexpected chic: We say any party is a reason for unexpected chic, espe-

cially if its on the water. Reect the colors around you in shades of aqua

and sunset to keep things festive. A shift dress becomes a work of art with

layers that move in the breeze, while a contrasting jacket and lady-like

dress demand to be the life of the party. Modern men make their own rules

when it comes to party attire. Stay comfortable in the outdoors while at-

tracting the ladies with a pair of shorts and a classic shirt accented by dapper accessories.

The perky little pup trots at

the end of her leash through

    airport terminals like shes at

    the Westminster dog show.

    But Mookie, a half Lhasa

apso-half shih tzu, isnt a show dog.

Shes a go dog. Mookies human, Angie

Morrill of Beaumont, takes the pooch on

    almost all of her travels.

At airports, Mookie is allowed to stay

on her leash until its time for boardingthe plane. Thats when she has to getinto her pet carrier. Shes stowed underthe seat for takeos and landings, butMorrill puts the carrier on her lap duringthe ight. The pup still has to stay in thecarrier, but her owner unzips it a bit soMookie can poke her head out and bepetted. She thought it was awesome,Morrill said of Mookies air travels. Shewas super excited about it.

without hesitation. She gets really excitedbout the go bag.

Mookie is the star traveler of the family.

Morrills Welsh corgi, Koda, would rather stayome, and her shih tzu, Oscar de la Renta, istill a puppy and learning to behave. Mookielso has a stranger-danger attitude, Morrillays, which keeps her away from people sheoesnt know.

Packing a doggie bagWhen traveling, Morrill packs absorbent

ads for the pet carrier, leashes, food andreats, water, bowls and Mookies favoriteoy. She also takes her dogs health certicaterovided by her vet.

Jessica Marziani, a veterinarian with Win-ie Veterinary Clinic, agrees that you should

eep your pets health record with you, espe-ially when driving out of state. If you areraveling across state lines, you need a healtherticate from your vet, she said.

The veterinarian recommends makinghort road trips with your pet before head-ng out on a long-distance adventure. Dontxpect your pet to be comfortable with a

engthy trip the rst time out. For puppiesnd cats, use a carrier that can be anchored

with a seatbelt. Dont forget to insert an ab-orbent pad and pack extras. For added peacef mind, disposable diapers are available forogs and cats, too. For dogs, Marziani advisessing a safety harness that works with a

seatbelt. She uses a seatbelt harness with herblack Labrador retriever, Pippa. It keepsher conned but gives her security, she

explained. If theres an accident, shes safer. Its also safer for the driver not to have a petroaming in the car that may become a danger-ous projectile in the event of an accident.

The vet realizes that many people withpickup trucks prefer to let their dogs ridein the trucks bed. She urges pet owners totie their dogs on short leashes if they do. Itonly takes one time for a dog to jump out andfracture his pelvis, she said. It only takes afew seconds to tie the dog in.

She remembers a client bringing aninjured 4-month-old puppy to her clinic. Ithad jumped out of the bed of a pickup truck, fracturing its femur and crushing its tail. She

set the puppys leg and amputated its tail.Within six months, it was back. The puppyhad still been allowed to ride unsecured inthe bed of a pickup truck, and it had jumpedout again. But this time its injuries were fatal. It had to be euthanized. They should havelearned their lesson, Marziani said of thepuppys owners.

When traveling for long distances by caror plane, Marziani recommends limiting yourpets food intake. Pets, like people, are morelikely to get motion sickness on a full stom-ach. Also, talk with your vet about medica-tions for motion sickness and anxiety. Thereare prescription medications that can help.

    Airline Pawsengers

If you plan to travel with your pet by planebe sure to follow your airlines guidelinesregarding pet travelers. Have an airline-approved pet carrier and your pets healtrecord from your veterinarian. Some

airlines require you to get your vet to ll out

a specic health-certicate form. Make sure

your pets vaccinations are up to date and

any necessary forms are lled out weeks in

    advance of your scheduled trip.

Many veterinarians advise keeping your p

with you in the main cabin if possible. But if

your pet is too big, it will have to be shippedas cargo, which can be dangerous since the

cargo hold is subject to extreme tempera-

tures. I dont recommend cargo, said Winn

    veterinarian Jessica Marziani.

You might want to consider Pet Airways, a

Florida-based airline that ies only pets and

keeps them in kennels in the main cabin.

    Attendants monitor the animals throughout

the ight. The airline ies out of several

major cities with plans for a Houston route

within the next year, according to a company

    representative.>>

Keep the name and contactnformation of your veterinarian

with you, and know the name andocation of the local emergencylinic at your destination. (If youretaying at a hotel, check that it ispet friendly before making reser-ations.) Cats and dogs should wearollars with identication tags. Andecause pets can lose their collars,

Marziani encourages pet ownerso get microchips for their animalso increase the chances of them

FROM ABROADpostcardsf the thought of moving across town or across states causes you to break out in hives from stress, imagine the challenges of movinto another country. Though it may sound like an awesome opportunity to a young single, when you have a household, children andpets, the effort can become exponentially more difficult. However, for those with an adventurous spirit, living as an expatriate is aamazing chance to experience different cultures and broaden the horizons of the whole family. Erin Johnson, Ann Dinham and Da

Hunter each packed up their homes and left Beaumont within the past year to scatter across the globe following their husbands

careers. In these letters home, they share some of the distinctions and differences of their new outposts.

    The Johnsons in Ontario, Canada

Its been quite an adventure moving toOakville, Ontario in Canada. We live about20 miles west of Toronto, right at thewestern edge of Lake Ontario. Its a very

beautiful place. The lake views create wonder-ful scenery during sunrises and sunsets. Wecan see the skyline of Niagara Falls and Torontoboth from right here in Oakville. Public green-ways and parks are everywhere. Ottawa is onlya few hours away, so we spent a weekend therefor the Winterlude Festival, complete withice and snow sculptures, eating beaver tails(translated elephant ears) and skating on theRideau Canal.

The most obvious change for us is the

weather. I never realized how much weatheaects the culture in a place. People here avery active outdoors, despite rain, snow, slor wind. I see people walking their dogs anjoggers faithfully running no matter the temperature.

As the weather gets warmer, people areswarming outdoors like ants.

Canada has a very diverse population. Ilove that my kids have friends from all overthe globe. Our school has representation frevery continent (except Antarctica!). Thereare lots of Americans here, too. There are ladies from Texas alone in my Bible study. TGreatest State is well represented here.

wonderful food. There is a heavy Eu-opean inuence in the food. French

nd British are most prevalent, butou can nd excellent Indian, Thai, hinese, Japanese and many other

ultural cuisines with the exceptionf Mexican. Mexican food is a littleierent here you can nd fajitaserved in a crepe.

Though there is much to see ando, everything is very expensive here.rices are about 30 percent highernd then you have to add 13 percentax to everything, so we try to eat atome a lot more. Some of the things

we used to take for granted are notvailable, such as Rotel tomatoes or

f peanut butter. There are subtle dierences in

he language here. Mom is mum, restroom is washroom, andsneakers are runners to namefew. If you say, yes maam oryall they will immediately iden-fy you as being from the southernnited States. And they really do say

eh a lot.Canadians do like their rules. I

ad to study for an hour to learn howo do trash. Recycling and compostn biodegradable bags and then I onlyet six bags of trash every two weeks!

nd if you dont follow all the rules, hey leave your stu right there onhe curb. That was a shocker for airl coming from Texas. They areery green here.

Canada is a lovely place and Imrateful that we got to come here. Buthere is a part of my heart that willlways belong in Texas mostly be-ause its people are so good. Cheers!

in Johnson lives in Canada with herusband, Michael, and children, Hannah, age and CJ, age 6.

    The Hunters in Doha, Qatar

Its 4:30 a.m. and Im lying in bed, listening tothe morning call to prayer. From our villa inthe city, I can hear at least four mosques, allrousing the locals to get out their prayer mats

and begin their day. The sounds clash and becomedissonant at times, but Im sure when I leave hereone day, I will miss it.

Uprooting your whole life to move to a foreigncountry is never easy, so we have had our challeng-es, but also amazing adventures relocating to Doha.

Qatar, a tiny country in the Persian Gulf, is mostfamous for its wealth. This is largely due to its oiland natural gas reserves. Driving to school, workor the mall, you will often spot a Ferrari, Bentley,Maserati, and plenty of Land Cruisers, which seemto be the national car. The malls all boast designerstores, ice rinks, amusement parks and lots of otherways to quickly spend your money!

One of our best experiences was dune bashing. We hired a professional driver to take us throughthe desert, and boy, was it a wild ride. The stunningausterity of the landscape is beautiful, includingtowering sand dunes and an amazing inland sea, with Saudi Arabia visible on the far shore. It wasliterally breathtaking to perch the o-road vehicle atthe top of a dune and then go ying down, everyonewith white knuckles all the way.

Speaking of white knuckles, driving here iscrazy. There are dierent trac patterns androad signs, and nobody obeys the rules. It makesyou wonder how people get their licenses here, especially since it took me three times to pass mydriving test!

Then there is the weather. The winter has been

great with mild days and, as expected, no rain. The summer is another story. It is so hot its justunimaginable. People have been known to bake

cookies in their car, or so I have been told. When wgot here in September, we went out for pizza andmy 7-year-old son asked me if they baked the pizzaoutside on the sidewalk! Though you would expectthe desert to be arid, it is very humid here becauseof the surrounding ocean.

Overall, we are having a great time here in DohOur concerns about safety in the Middle East havebeen laid to rest. In spite of the turmoil in the re-gion, Qatar remains a peaceful place. We have beenfree to practice our faith and wear the clothes weare comfortable in, as long as we respect the localIslamic culture and traditions. The food is outstanding and I highly recommend sampling some Arabicfood when you have the chance. Highlights includegrilled meat kebabs, hummus, tabbouleh and freshbaked atbreads.

We miss our friends back in Beaumont, but areglad to have the opportunity to travel and learnmore about such a dierent landscape and culture

The Dinhams in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

    Down under with the Dinhams

Christmas is in summer?! The school year starts in February?! You have to drive on the left?!

Missing holiday celebrations: Grace says, No Halloween! Eveisays, Valentines was pathetic; the teacher didnt even say Happy Valen-tines Day.

Ondaily life I now have to hang the washing out on a washline. The weather is

famously unpredictable in Melbourne, four seasons in one day and nodryer in our rental property. You can imagine taking it down/putting itup 10 times a day is not my idea of fun.

We all, even young James Beau, cycle everywhere. Every road has acycle lane, and a bike has the same rights on the road as a yute (truck).

Skinny at white is my new nonfat latte. In Melbourne, everysecond shop is a coee shop and breakfast is the main social meal of theday no invites to lunch here.

School is about enquiry learning, where progress is assessed by howwell students develop experimental and analytical skills rather than how

much knowledge they possess. The jury is still out on this one! Budgie Smugglers. Google it. Laurence is refusing to dress accord-ingly!

Whatwemiss Target, Wal-Mart, Dollar Tree, etc. The AUD$ does not go far. No drive-thru would be funny on a bike! Grace is missing her soccer team. Very few girls play soccer here.

Netball (Google it, too) is the popular female sport, but we will be learn-ing to play lacrosse.

City Dance Studio. Drama is the thang here, so look out Holly-wood!

All our friends and neighbours (dierent country, dierent spelling). The girls have been told o for incorrectly spelling color and mom.

All in, we have hadgreat back-to-backsummers moving

    River riders

The Neches is considered the last wild riverin East Texas and the wildlife is abundant.

Thats one reason why so many local boaters

love it, including the members of the Beau-mont Yacht Club.

The clubs goal is to provide a safe andfriendly boating environment. Origi-

nally chartered in 1958 as the Beau-mont Boat Club, it ocially became

the Beaumont Yacht Club in 1987. Itis governed by a commodore and aboard of governors who are elected

from the club membership. The main thing were here

for is to enjoy the river, saidRicky Ware, commodore. We

    revolve around a family atmo-sphere.

There are about 200slips total, which includes

    accommodations forabout 10 live-aboards.

There are six peopleliving aboard theirboats now, including

Ware and his wife,Jennie Ware, on his

    65-foot houseboat.The marina

    sells gas, diesel,engine oil and

    supplies.There are

    four launchramps

    located

in sheltered water for easy loading and unload-ing of small and large boats. Members can use anair-conditioned galley building, restrooms, showersand a covered pavilion.

Social events are a big part of the club year-round. Theres a summer luau, kids splash dayand an eggnog party hosted by the commodore inDecember. And with about 350 members, there arealways people around who want to go out boating.Thats what its all about everybody coming onthe river and having a good time, Ware said.

If sailing is more your style, then the PortArthur Yacht Club on Sabine Lake is the naturalnautical choice.

The clubs mission is to encourage yachting ina safe and sporting manner, with an emphasis onsailing and racing. The club, established in 1965,is governed by ocers led by a commodore and aboard of directors.

People join the yacht club mostly for the sailingand the camaraderie of the sailors, said Paul Vera, commodore. He wants to be clear that the club isnot highbrow. We all work for a living, he said ofthe clubs 84 members. We dont live on a cham-pagne budget.

The clubs facilities include an air-conditioned

clubhouse with full kitchen. The gated-entrymarina currently has about 50 slips but, accordingto Vera, will number closer to 500 by the end ofthe year when construction to repair Hurricane Ikedamage is nished. Members also have access to aeet of small sailboats, which are used during theannual summer Junior Sailing Camp and the JuniorSailing Regatta.

Members take sailing seriously and the racingand cruising schedule is full. Thursday night racesstart in March and run through the summer. Thesocial calendar is booked solid with parties after theraces and cruises, holiday events, picnics, a treasurehunt and an awards banquet.

Vera noted that there are no full-time live-

aboards at present, but several couples come everyweekend to stay on their boats. Port Arthur YachtClub is like a camp away from home, he said.

    I

f your recent vacation included some spa time, theres

good news and bad news. The bad news is that youve

been completely spoiled and are probably humming

an Enya song in your head right now. The good news

is that your spa experience can be fairly easy to re-

create at home so that you can revisit the indulgence

    whenever you feel like it.

Following are some ideas on how to do just that:

    The Bathroom Itself

If you can come home and, on a whim, order a full re-designof your bathroom, theres a whole host of renovations you can do,starting from the ground up. Heated oor tiles are a wonderfulluxury, for example.

Also popular are elaborate showers that feature walk-in design, dual (or triple) shower heads, and other congurations that createwater-based sensations ranging from a soothing mist to a torrential

downpour. Of course there are alwayslarge, deep tubs with built-in whirlpooljets, as well. Built-in warming drawersfor towels; televisions and sound systems;and even replaces are all things to con-sider when overhauling your bathroom.

But even if you have to work withyour existing bathroom, there are plentyof things you can do to re-create that spaexperience and bring a little of your vaca-tion home with you.

First and foremost, plan ahead. Geta babysitter, or get everyone out of thehouse. And give yourself some time.

Our lives are so busy, and we all haveso much going on. It takes a little whileto really clear your head and relax, saidCambie Ford, a massage therapist at Cen-ter of Attention salon in Lumberton. Ofcourse, eight hours might be overdoing it,but I would say at least an hour and a halfto two hours.

Setting the scene is important. Forthat, you want the colors in your bath-room to be subdued. Natural light is agreat relaxer, but short of that, low lightwith a good amount of candles is key.Gently scented, soy-based candles arebest.

Essential OilsEssential oils can foster specic states

of mind according to which fragrance youchoose. For general relaxation, Ford said, lavender is your go-to oil. For mentalclarity and meditation, clove oil is a goodbet. She recommends Kobashi or YoungLiving essential oils because theyre pureand all-natural.

Oils can be used in various ways: Add them to Epsom salts to make a

relaxing bath soak Put them into a pot of boiling water

to create a soothing steam Mix them with sea salt or sugar and

oil like olive or saower to make an all-natural scrub

Ford warns not to put essential oilsdirectly on the skin or into bath water

unless you read the labels. Some, likelemon, can cause burns. If the label saysto dilute an oil, be sure to do it withanother plain oil (like olive or saower)since oil and water dont mix; the oil willjust sit on top.

Something to remember when itcomes to fragrances: Keep your choicessimple and complementary orals withorals, woodsy with woodsy, etc.

You dont want a lavender essentialoil and a Snickerdoodle candle at thesame time, Ford said.

    Massage

If your day of pampering includesa signicant other, then a massage is ano-brainer. But if you decide to go solo, fret not! Salon techniques like hot rocksand heated towels are easy to re-createat home, Ford said. You can heat anysmooth rocks in hot water and use themto work out knots in your muscles. Orcreate a rice pack to soothe any areas thatare feeling particularly tense: Pour somedry rice into a sock or small pillowcase, and microwave to the desired level ofheat.

If youre heating towels, Judy Price, esthetician at Center of Attention, recom-

mends doing them in the oven. Wet andwring the towels, then put them in a bak-ing dish and heat at about 200 degrees. Then cover the pan with foil and takeit into the bathroom to keep the towelswarm until you want to use them.

Remember when using any hot prod-uct, whether it be stones, towels, pillowsor steam, be vary cautious about thetemperature and test before using it.

    Skin Care

Price recommends doing a facial afteryour bath or shower. Use a gentle exfolia-tor, followed by a mask, then a cleanser

and nally, a moisturizer. She uses Cos-meceutical products by Dr. Dusty Dean, aresident of McKinney, Texas.

In between steps, wrap your face in a

warm, moist towel. Sound like it mighttake some time? It will and thats ex-actly the point.

Do everything at a leisurely pace, plan on taking at least 45 minutes [for afacial], Price said. You can do it in 15minutes, but why?

    Hair

Once youve done all of your soaking, scrubbing, exfoliating, moisturizing, etc.,dont forget your crowning glory yourhair. Center of Attention owner JamieCullen recommends Pureology products, which are sulfate-free, easy on color, and

only available through salons. She alsorecommends using a round, boar-bristlebrush, which limits breakage while styl-ing.

Although blow-dry and styling timedepend on the cut, Cullen says to devoteat least 30 minutes of your dedicated spatime to your hair.

After a day of pampering, relaxingand taking care of yourself, if your hair islooking perfect, then everybodys happy! Its the nishing touch, she said.

    The Routine

Ford suggests that you start your spa

experience with a homemade or all-natu-ral scrub in the shower, then follow witha soothing soak with scented Epsom salts.

Next, soothe your muscles with mas-sage, do a facial, give yourself a manicureand/or pedicure (she recommends buyinga pair of uy ip-ops that will protectyour pedi but still oer the comfort ofslippers), then tend to your hair.

Finally, once youve nished yourpampering routine, keep the relaxationgoing.

When youre all through, if you can,go to bed! Get all snuggly, wrap yourselfup. Dont turn on the TV. Read a book or

listen to some good music, Price said. Itsounds selsh to say we have to take careof ourselves rst, but if were stressed, what good are we to anybody?

It sounds selsh to say we have to take care of ourselves rst, but

dream big, right? What if moneywas no option? What if you had themeans to be the envy of all of yourfriends and family? What wouldyou do and where would you go?

Would you pack the kids togo sail around the high seas withMickey and Minnie or would youmake it a romantic getaway for twoto Los Cabos? Would you run awayby yourself to explore Spain andhave a fabulous rendezvous withfriends you make along the way?

    Planning child-friendly vacations can
