The Mazda6 MPS, flagship model of the verysuccessful Mazda6 range and the mostpowerful Mazda production sedan of alltime, will be launched across Europe at thebeginning of this year. It is Mazda’s entry intothe growing market for high-performancesedans. In developing the new Mazda6 MPS,the primary goal was to create a vehicle thattakes Mazda Zoom-Zoom to a new level forspirited dynamic performance. And in thisMazda has succeeded. With its turbochargedMZR 2.3 DISI* petrol engine, Active TorqueSplit All-Wheel Drive and a chassis optimizedfor the increases in power and torque, theMazda6 MPS is Zoom-Zoom driving enjoy-ment at its very best.
Petrol direct-injection and turbocharging arethe primary power sources for the new four-cylinder engine from Mazda’s MZR family ofpetrol powerplants. It produces a maximum of191 kW/260 PS at 5,500 rpm and maximumtorque of 380 Nm is available from as low as

3,000 rpm. As a result, the Mazda6 MPS accel–erates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.6 secondswith a top speed of 240 km/h, making it one ofthe fastest sedans in the segment, and couplesthis with a combined fuel consumption of10.2 litres per 100 km. A newly-developed six-speed manual transmission makes the MPSdriving experience even more enjoyable. Itscompact, three-shaft design has a wider gearratio setting, which allows the driver to exploitthe engine’s power to the fullest.
Depending on road surface and driving situation,Mazda6 MPS’s Active Torque Split All-WheelDrive system applies up to 50 percent ofengine power to the rear wheels. Usinginformation about steering angle, yaw rate, lateral G-force and engine status, an electroni-cally controlled active torque coupling mountedin front of the rear differential distributespower between the front and rear axles for justthe right amount of torque in every drivingsituation. The system uses three different all-wheel drive protocols, chosen automatically bythe car’s engine control module so the drivercan concentrate on the road ahead: “Normal,”“Sport” and “Stability” for slippery drivingsurfaces like snow.

Local reinforcements to the body shell weremade at sub-assembly level to deliver a stifferbody and chassis to handle the increase inpower output of the new Mazda6 MPS. Thesenew features resulted in a 50 percent increasein torsional stiffness compared to the stan-dard four-door Mazda6 sedan. Besides givingthe car a more rigid body, the engineers of themotor sports division Mazdaspeed tuned thechassis to be sportier without sacrificingMazda6’s already high levels of ride comfort. Adouble-wishbone front suspension system anda multi-link rear suspension are employed. Both are equipped with stronger dampers, coilsprings with higher spring rates and thickerstabilizer bars. In addition, the brake systemhas been enhanced with larger front and reardisc brakes installed in large 18-inch wheelswith a unique design.
Discreet Design Enhancements Hint atMazda6 MPS’s High-performance NatureModifications to the exterior and interior com-plement the sporty character of the newMazda6 MPS. Mazda carefully refined theexterior design of the car with the goal of com-municating its high-performance nature in adiscreet, sophisticated way. Nevertheless, witha “power dome” for the bonnet, larger air intake,a rear bumper with a diffuser, integrated tail–pipes and discreet boot lid spoiler that provides

downforce, Mazda tailored the well-definedbody of the Mazda6 with a sporty suit of MPSclothes.
On the inside, the Mazda6 MPS has specialfabrics and even higher quality materials foran improved interior ambience. The cockpitis a harmonious synthesis of functional sporti-ness and sophisticated comfort. Special interiordesign features include a speedometer scaledto 280 km/h, a three-spoke leather steeringwheel, semi-bucket front seats, a leather shiftknob and aluminium pedals with rubber nubs. The Mazda6 line up’s sporty flagship also bene-fits from all the new interior features introducedin the summer of 2005 with the Mazda6 facelift.Among these are thicker arm rests and newvertical interior door handles, along with anew surface for the centre stack (in dark titani-um) and piano black audio system controls foran even higher quality interior look.

The new Mazda6 MPS is the most powerful pro-duction sedan Mazda has ever built. It wasdeveloped beginning in July 2002 with a majorcontribution from the motor sports divisionMazdaspeed, whose engineers employed theirextensive sports car experience in speciallytuning the chassis.
Mazda has a long tradition of building sportscars, culminating in the third-generation of therear-wheel drive rotary engine RX-7 and thecurrent Mazda RX-8 with rotary engine andfour doors. In 1991, Mazdaspeed achieved ahigh point in Mazda sports car history by beingthe first carmaker to win the 24-Hours of LeMans with a rotary engine car. Mazda was alsothe first Japanese carmaker to win Le Manssince the race was founded in 1923. And not toforget, Mazda raced rally cars in the 1980s and1990s with turbocharged engines and all-wheeldrive transmissions.
As flagship of the Mazda6 model range, design–ers of the new Mazda6 MPS purposefully avoid–ed the temptation to give the sports sedan anaggressively “rally-style” appearance. Theydecided against using exterior features like alarge wing-type spoiler or a bonnet scoop forthe engine’s intercooler. Instead, they createdan exterior that hints at the car’s powerful engineand sporty chassis in a discreet and sophisticated
14

way, ensuring that the Mazda6 MPS cuts a goodfigure wherever it is driven.
At the 2002 Paris Motor Show, Mazda revealedthe Mazda6 MPS Concept Car, indicating theirintentions of entering the prestigious sportssedan market in the future. It was designed byMazda’s European R&D Centre in Oberursel,Germany and much of the concept from 2002anticipated features that are now being launch–ed with the production model.
The Mazda6 MPS is the new flagship model ofthe extremely successful Mazda6 model range. In Europe, the Mazda6 propelled Mazda to salessuccesses that no one thought possible. Whiletotal Mazda sales in 2001 stood at 165,000 unitsin Europe, by 2004 this number had climbed to265,000 units. The lion’s share of this growth

was contributed by the Mazda6, of whichalmost 100,000 were sold during its first fullyear on the market (2003) – 43 percent of totalsales volume for that year. Mazda6’s popularityhas not waned since then and it has remainedone of Mazda Motor Europe’s best-sellingvehicles. In 2005, it had nearly the same volumeand close to 5 percent segment share for theyear. To date, more than 900,000 Mazda6s havebeen produced at Mazda’s Hofu II assemblyplant in Hiroshima and at the AAI inMichigan, USA.

The ultimate Mazda6 goes by the name “MPS.”This is an abbreviation of “Mazda PerformanceSeries” and is Mazda’s entry into theprosperous market for high-performancesedans in the European C and D-segments.Since 2000, sales of these types of sedans havenearly tripled across Europe.
For Mazda, the MPS is the most radical appli-cation yet of Zoom-Zoom driving fun. With itsmuscular yet understated exterior design andits extremely sporty chassis set up, it steps upto the plate against competitors like the AudiA4 V6 3.2 Quattro, or the BMW 330 iX. Buteven more extremely styled models like theGTA version from Alfa Romeo or the OpelVectra OPC are competitors of the 260 PSstrong sedan. Its mix of discreet styling, highperformance and its attractive price for valueso typical of Mazda, make the Mazda6 MPS avery competitive vehicle among high-perfor-mance automobiles.
The main target group for what might possiblybe the first of other future MPS models will bemiddle aged men who appreciate the indivi-dualistic design and roominess of the standardMazda6, and who find the added drivingenjoyment of the MPS appealing.

Even the standard Mazda6 exterior expressesthe brand identity in a pure form. It has an ath-letic body design that seems to move even whenstanding still, with sophisticated detailing and astrong road presence. For the Mazda6 MPS,Mazda carefully reworked the modern design ofthe standard Mazda6 sedan with the goal ofvisually communicating the high-performancecharacter of the vehicle in a harmonious way.In delivering this, designers stayed very close tothe design language of the Mazda6, whileavoiding overstatement.
Nevertheless, Mazda6 MPS’s front bumperdesign, optimized to be more aerodynamic andset off by fog lights in dark coloured mounts atthe corners of the lower front bumper, its char–acteristic Mazda five-point grille and enlargedlower air intake provide a sporty and confidentappearance. Press lines running from the frontgrille towards the A-pillars emphasize thelength of the front end. The bonnet itself is raised40 mm – a visual hint at the turbochargedpower beneath and the intercooler placed flaton top of the engine. The lines of the bonnet’s“power dome” hint at the power beneath.
Side skirts make the MPS look powerful andgive the car a low, aggressive crouch when seenfrom the side. Under flared front and rear fend–ers, the wheel arches are filled with 18-inchaluminium alloy wheels with an elegant 15-spoke design, mounted with 215/45 R 18 tyres.
24
M6MPS-Englisch-Ori.qxd 16.01.2006 14:15 Uhr Seite 24
Power is also suggested by dual integrate tailpipesin the lower rear panel. Stylistically similar tothe Mazda RX-8, the rear skirt of the MPS has adiffuser and a small spoiler on the boot lid, which provides additional downforce at highspeeds. “Taken together, we have furtherimproved the car’s drag coefficient with thesefeatures, and further optimized the lift balancebetween the front and rear axles,” said TsuyoshiKojima, Mazda6 MPS Deputy ProgrammeManager.
Developed exclusively for the Mazda6 MPS isan all-new iridescent exterior colour calledMoist Silver Metallic. In a way similar to thechanging moods of the four seasons, this exte-rior colour gives off different nuances of silverdepending on how the light hits the car andfrom what angle one is looking at it. Besidesthis, the Mazda6 MPS comes in three otherexterior colours: red, black and titanium greymetallic.

• Leather steering wheel and gear shift knob
• Semi-bucket front seats in leather
• Stainless steel scuff plates and aluminium pedals
M6MPS-Englisch-Ori.qxd 16.01.2006 14:15 Uhr Seite 27
The cockpit is where the MPS differentiatesitself from the rest of the Mazda6 model range.Sporty features here include a speedometercalibrated to 280 km/h, a sporty gear shiftknob with improved grip, a three-spoke leath–er steering wheel and semi-bucket front seatsin leather with superior side support. The elec-trically adjustable driver seat includes a seatposition memory function, which can storeup to five different driver seat positions. Threecan be programmed using the three memorybuttons on the side of the cushion. Two furtherseat positions can be programmed with thetwo retractable keys delivered to the customer. This is especially convenient, because the seatautomatically moves to the pre-programmedposition when the doors are unlocked and thedriver door opened. Stainless steel sill scuffplates and aluminium pedals are onboard aswell. Rubber nubs on the aluminium pedalsprovide additional shoe hold during accelera-tion, braking and changing gears.
The interior delivers room for five people totravel in comfort and style. For the MPS,Mazda once again raised the bar on interiorquality feel through the use of special uphol-stery and even higher quality materials. As aresult of these measures, the cockpit is a suc-cessful combination of functional sportinessand high levels of comfort. The rear seats of
28
M6MPS-Englisch-Ori.qxd 16.01.2006 14:15 Uhr Seite 28
the Mazda6 MPS do not fold down, because toenhance body shell rigidity a diagonal bracestructure was added behind the second rowseatbacks. Because of this, boot volume isslightly lower than that of the standardMazda6 – 455 litres for the Mazda6 MPS,rather than 505 litres for its sister model – aminor difference that does not affect overallboot practicality. The new Mazda6 MPS can, like its sister model, still transport four golfbags easily.
Even though the cockpit design of the Mazda6facelift, launched in Europe in summer 2005,was left basically unchanged, the new stan-dard model did see some interior upgradesversus the outgoing Mazda6 – upgrades thatthe new Mazda6 MPS also received. Theseinclude, among others, thicker upholstery forthe door armrests, as well as vertical doorhandles for passengers to hold during sportierdriving.
The newly-designed chrome mouldings forthe round gauges of the instrument clusterlend the cockpit a sporty elegance. The centrestack now has a dark titanium face and a pianoblack surface for the controls of the Bose®audio system. This system comes with an inte-grated six-CD changer and seven speakers.

• 2.3-litre direct-injection turbocharged petrol engine
• 260 PS at 5,500 rpm and maximum torque of 380 Nm at 3,000 rpm
• Active Torque Split All-Wheel Drive system
M6MPS-Englisch-Ori.qxd 16.01.2006 14:15 Uhr Seite 33
Petrol direct-injection and turbocharging arethe primary technologies used to produce theoutstanding performance output of Mazda’snew MZR 2.3 DISI engine. Compared to alarge-displacement naturally-aspirated engine– a 3.0-litre V6, for instance – the MZR 2.3 DISIpetrol delivers better low to mid-range torquewhile keeping fuel consumption down andproducing fewer emissions. Maximum powerof 191 kW/260 PS – almost 100 PS more thanthe 166 PS 2.3-litre naturally-aspirated engineof the standard Mazda6 – is reached at 5,500 rpm, while maximum torque hits its peak of 380 Nmat a relatively low 3,000 rpm.
Mazda’s new engine injects petrol at highpressure (up to 115 bar) directly into the com-bustion chamber, which causes a coolingeffect when it vaporizes, which in turn improvesthe load efficiency of the fuel mixture. At anengine speed of 3,000 rpm, Mazda6 MPS’sdirect-injection engine produces 10 percentmore torque than a turbocharged manifoldinjection engine. And the system produces alinear increase in the rotation speed of theturbocharger’s compressor blades, whichmeans substantial boost is available from aslow as 2,500 rpm.
The MZR 2.3 DISI engine employs a single-scroll exhaust-gas turbocharger, which notonly saves weight but also minimizes heat loss
34
M6MPS-Englisch-Ori.qxd 16.01.2006 14:15 Uhr Seite 34
of the exhaust gases. Direct-injection alsoallows a homogenous air/fuel mixture to formaround the spark plug, which effectively pre-vents misfire. Ignition timing can even beslightly delayed, which helps to maintain thetemperature of the exhaust gases. The decisiveadvantage of all these engine technologies isthat the Mazda6 MPS’s catalytic converterheats up quicker, helping the engine toachieve a Euro Stage IV emissions ranking.
The engine’s internal cooling effect also sup-presses engine knock and lowers fuel con-sumption without any sacrifice in powerfulengine response at low rpm. And the engine’srelatively high compression ratio (for a turbo-charged engine) of 9.5:1 also contributes to itachieving a combined fuel consumption of10.2 litres per 100 km.
www.mazda-press.com
M6MPS-Englisch-Ori.qxd 16.01.2006 14:15 Uhr Seite 35
The shape and materials of the components ofthe MZR 2.3 DISI engine were optimized tohandle the engine’s added load and heat. Theengine block and cylinder head were madeusing the Advanced Precision Mazda Castingprocess; cross-drilling between the blockliners and between the valve bridges on thecylinder head improved the engine’s thermalcharacteristics. All moving parts have beenoptimized for greater rigidity and durability. The crankshaft and connecting rods are madeof high-tensile steel, for instance, and the con-necting pin diameters were increased. Addi-tionally, engine designers optimized the shapeof the rods and introduced full floating pistons.
To increase driving enjoyment even more,Mazda6 MPS engineers conducted extensivesound tuning. They changed the shape anddiameter of the exhaust pipes and optimizedthe internal structure of the silencer, whichresulted in a throaty, sporty sound whilesprinting from a standing start – music to theears of any driving enthusiast.
An electronic throttle and electronically con-trolled turbo boost system mean the newMazda6 MPS accelerates without turbo lagand ensures spirited throttle pedal response. As a result, the Mazda6 MPS reaches 100 km/h
36
M6MPS-Englisch-Ori.qxd 16.01.2006 14:15 Uhr Seite 36

from a standstill in only 6.6 seconds. In thirdgear, it accelerates from 50 to 100 km/h in just4.5 seconds and from 60 to 80 km/h in fourthgear in only 2.4 seconds. With a top speed of240 km/h, the Mazda6 MPS is among thefastest high-performance sedans in Europe.
New Six-speed Manual TransmissionA newly-developed six-speed manual trans-mission makes driving the Mazda6 MPS evenmore fun. Its three-shaft design makes it a verycompact gearbox, and it has a wide gear ratiosetting that allows full exploitation of the en–gine’s power. The sixth gear is laid out tooptimize fuel consumption and lowers enginenoise during high speed cruising on themotorway. First, second and third gears havetriple-cone synchronizers and fourth gear hasdouble-cone synchronizers, which ensuresmooth, responsive shifting. The Mazda6 MPStransmission is easy to shift, with short, preciseshift travel.
Depending on the road surface and drivingconditions, Mazda6 MPS’s Active Torque SplitAll-Wheel Drive system applies up to 50 per-cent of engine power to the rear wheels. Usingreal-time information about steering angle, yaw rate, wheel speed, lateral G-force andthrottle-valve position, the system continu-ously monitors road surface and driving
M6MPS-Englisch-Ori.qxd 16.01.2006 14:15 Uhr Seite 37
38
conditions and – using an electronically con-trolled active torque coupling mounted in frontof the rear differential – distributes torque be–tween the front and rear axles. The vehicle’sall-wheel drive control module automati-cally chooses between three driving modes:“Normal” (delivers the majority of torque tothe front wheels), “Sport” (at high acceleration,up to 50 percent of the torque is transferred tothe rear wheels, for even more driving fun)and “Stability” (for use on slippery surfaces, itgives a 50:50 torque distribution between theaxles for maximum traction.)
A rear limited slip differential – with thesame design as that used on the Mazda RX-8sports car – also controls torque distributionbetween the left and right rear wheels.Torsional stiffness of the propeller shaft andthe rear differential mount has been increasedfor a more rigid feel to the entire rear axleassembly, especially under acceleration.

The body and chassis systems of the newMazda6 MPS were optimized to complementthe higher output and torque of the car’s engine, including the introduction of local reinforce-ments at sub-assembly level. The body-in-white received additional reinforcements atseveral locations using, among other features,high-strength steel. To realize this, a series ofchanges in the floor assembly and the bodystructure were introduced. These include:
• Reinforced cross member mounts in the area of the front bumper
• Strengthened mounts where the front suspension is connected to the perimeter frame
• The number of joints between the instrument panel members and the body increased from three to four
• A diagonal brace structure added behind the rear seatbacks with four angled members
42
M6MPS-Englisch-Ori.qxd 16.01.2006 14:15 Uhr Seite 42
• Larger cross members atop the floor assembly
• Strengthened rear suspension mounts to bear the higher damping force of the new dampers
• Reinforced gussets introduced at the top of the A-pillars in the area of the roof structure
Parallel to delivering a more rigid body shell,Mazda engineers tuned the car’s chassis to besportier, without sacrificing ride comfort. Thedouble-wishbone front suspension uses damp-ers with increased damping force and coilsprings with a 25 percent higher spring rate.Added to this were thicker stabilizer bars(increased in diameter from 22 mm to 24 mm)and optimized lower front suspension armbushings. Damper rates were also optimizedfor the multi-link rear suspension, with springrates increased by 26 percent and thicker sta-bilizer bars introduced (increased in diameterfrom 19 mm to 23 mm) compared to the stan-dard Mazda6 sedan.
The Mazda6 MPS helps protect passengerswith a strong body structure and a rigid andfurther reinforced front sub-frame. The passivesafety package includes front and sideairbags and curtain airbags as standard.Like other Mazda6 models, the brake pedal isconstructed in such a way that it does not

intrude into the driver foot well during frontimpact.
To help the Mazda6 MPS avoid an accident, thelarger 18-inch diameter wheels accommodatelarger diameter disc brakes – ventilated infront and solid at the rear. The all-disc system is backed up with ABS, EBD, brake assist, plusdynamic stability and traction control. Tocounter the additional power when comparedto the standard Mazda6, MPS’s front discbrake diameter was increased by 37 mm (to320 mm), while its rear solid brake discs are34 mm larger (314 mm) in diameter. Largerbrake callipers were also introduced.
For optimal visibility and a clearly definedview of the road at night and in bad weather, the Mazda6 MPS has xenon headlights andfront fog lights standard.
