Byers Evans House Museum Denver, Colorado

Byers Evans House was the home of William Byers, founder of the Rocky Mountain News. It is located in the urban core of downtown Denver, adjacent to the Denver Art Museum.

Mundus Bishop’s design restores the front garden and creates a new entrance terrace and plaza for museum visitors.

An elegant trellis marks the visitor entry. Finely detailed sandstone steps and paving complement the historic stone walls. An espalier of flowering trees screens the terrace, providing a comfortable, intimate outdoor space for museum activities and public use. Lush flowers and groundcover, street trees, a tree lawn, sandstone walks, and wrought iron fencing re-establish the house as a prominent urban building.

Denver Botanic Gardens Welcome Plaza Denver, Colorado

Mundus Bishop’s contemporary design for the Welcome Garden at Denver Botanic Gardens features an entry plaza and garden composed of native Colorado materials. Denver Botanic Garden’s core values – Transformation, Sustainability, Diversity and Relevance are expressed in the garden’s design.

The Welcome Garden is the main entrance and gathering space for the many school groups that visit the Gardens. It also serves as a special events space and as an exit for the summer concerts.

The centerpiece of the Welcome Garden is a water feature composed of sandstone and granite water walls. Cascading water falls over a granite wier and carved granite steps into a tranquil lower pool.

Garden plantings are indigenous and hardy trees, shrubs and perennials that thrive in Colorado’s climate. Evergreen trees create a dense backdrop; riparian and upland shrubs and perennials line the water basins; and deciduous and ornamental trees provide shade define private spaces and shade the terrace.

Civic Center Broadway Terrace Denver, Colorado

Mundus Bishop’s rehabilitation of the Broadway Terrace in Denver’s Civic Center has created a new public gathering space for every day users and special events that expresses the elegance and importance of its role in the life of the city.

Broadway Terrace is a now a vibrant, pedestrian space. Undertaken as largest landscape rehabilitation project ever accomplished for Denver’s most beloved urban park, the design respects and builds upon the park’s original character. The stage-like presence of the terrace has room for large gatherings, complemented by small, quiet alcoves. Simple, but elegantly finished paving graces each building entrance, and sandstone walls define the terrace as threshold between building and landscape. The CU Visual Arts Complex is LEED Gold certified, new construction.

Bill Hosokawa Bonzai Pavilion and Tea Garden Denver, Colorado

When Shofu-en (“pine-winds”) was built in 1979, it was the first phase of the full Japanese Garden envisioned for Denver Botanic Gardens. To fulfill their mission, two additional gardens were needed—a tea garden with an authentic tea ceremony experience, and a garden to display the bonsai collection.

Mundus Bishop’s design of the new gardens complement and complete the original masterpiece by adhering to traditional Japanese form and “roles” with a plant palette and detailing adapted to respond to Colorado’s local conditions—climate, materials and craftsmanship.

The Bonsai Garden is an edge, a back drop, an entrance and a destination. The gardens are individualistic gems, consistent with Japanese character and style, and in the tradition of DBG’s use of natural and man-made materials (sandstone, wood and concrete).
