of Construction and Engineering Technologies were recognized by

the Certified Technicians and Technologists Association of Manitoba

(CTTAM) with an Honorary Lifetime Membership.

Fred served for several years as a lay representative on the CTTAM

Board. Dale worked collaboratively with CTTAM for approximately

18 years as the Dean. The membership awards were presented at the

CTTAM Annual General Meeting.

Technology Ring

he technology ring is a symbol of professionalism and

is worn on the fifth finger. It is the exclusive domain of

certified engineering and applied science technicians

and technologists in Canada. The ring is formed

by a repeating pattern of five gears bracketed by a

maple leaf on each side. The gears represent the five members of the

Tengineering team: trades person, technicians, technologists, engineers

and scientists.

Certified Technicians and Technologists can obtain a

technology ring from the CTTAM office located at 602 –

1661 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg. The cost of the ring is $100.00.

Contact Anita at 204-784-1083 if more information is required.

ew applicants applying for certification with CTTAM

n historic agreement has

been signed by the Certified

Technicians and Technologists

Association of Manitoba

(CTTAM) and the Applied

Science Technologists and Technicians of

British Columbia (ASTTBC) that joins the

two in managing state-of-the-art software

for professional certification, providing a

much more effective pathway, especially for

newcomers to Canada. Key features include:

• Assessment for certification based on

competencies

• Self-assessment process, giving the

applicant the lead role

• National technology standards guide

CTTAM Competency/Certifi cation Exams

TTAM is now off ering competency/certifi cation

exams. Existing Certifi ed Technicians (C.Tech.) who

are required to write a technical report in order to

re-class to a technologist now have the option of

writing a competency exam. Certifi ed Technicians

who want to re-class to a Certifi ed Technologist can also write a

competency exam and if a passing grade is received, can submit a

re-class application. The re-class application must be accompanied

by a competency summary signed by their immediate supervisor

as part of the re-class process.

New applicants who have completed a Canadian non-

accredited engineering technology program or foreign program

that has been assessed by the panel of examiners as equivalent

to technologist academics will now be required to write a

competency exam and submit a competency summary to achieve

the technologist academic classifi cation. You must be certifi ed as

a Technician (C.Tech.) in order to qualify for writing a competency

exam. Associates are not eligible to write the competency

exam. Go to CTTAM’s website at www.cttam.com, >Membership,

ngineers Geoscientists

Manitoba has a new type

of license category – the

Specified Scope of Practice

License (otherwise known

as the Limited License).

This new category allows those

who have a non-engineering or

non-geoscience degree to be able to

practice engineering or geoscience

within a limited scope of a specific

discipline. Eligible applicants include

those who have either college diplomas

in engineering technology or bachelor

degrees in related fields which are not

engineering or geoscience – for example,

chemistry, biology, environmental

science, physics or mathematics.

Changes to The Engineering &

Geoscientific Professions Act of Manitoba

that took place in 2015, put in place the

proper regulatory framework for this

new license category. The Act changes

were precipitated by license categories

already in place in other provinces such

as British Columbia, Saskatchewan and

Alberta. Common license categories

across Canada allow for mobility

between provinces. A lot of work

was done by Engineers Geoscientists

Manitoba’s Limited License Task Group

to finalize the qualification criteria;

these criteria are referred to as “paths”

which are now on the website. A big

“thank you” to the CTTAM members who

participated on the task group.

Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba

started taking applications as of

January 1, 2017. To date, there are 16

people who are ‘beta testing’ the online

registration system by inputting real

information. So far the feedback has

been positive.

Reviewing the online files of limited

license applicants will begin in autumn,

when the digital files are ready for the

Specified Scope of Practice committee.

The committee anticipates a few

challenges and as they move forward;

as with any new system it is important

to proceed carefully to avoid any

lurking pitfalls.

license category, please go to the
