The COUNTRY MATTERS programs are adaptations of short stories by A. E. Coppard entitled "The Higgler," "The Black Dog," and "The Water¬ cress Girl;" and a story of H. E. Bates entitled "The Mill." 'The Higgler" tells the story of a peddler in farm produce who is offered, and rejects, a tidy farm, a secure life, and a beautiful woman only to lose everything because he can't trust his own luck. In "The Black Dog", an aristocratic young man falls in love with a village girl and dis¬ covers he has stepped into a ruthless environment that he cannot endure. "The Watercress Girl" is a story of twisted love and hate and a brutal attack by one woman upon another. 'Lotsa Luck' FoLynn IrwinBy RUTH E. THOMPSON"Oohi This is the first time

I've seen you without yourbathrobe!" gasped a prettybrunette named Sophia asWynn Irwin drove into sightneatly clad in a sports' jacketand slacks. It was indeed thefirst time that this Sophia (sheis an NBC receptionist) everhad seen Wynn in person. Hegrinned. Strangers on thestreet holler the same phraseat him, or a variant, "Where'syour bathrobe?" The bathrobeis the entire wardrobeassigned him as DomDeLuise's parasite brother-in-law on NBC's "Lotsa Luck."The series, which bowed last

September, wasn't renewedfor fall but Wynn speakswarmly of it as, "My biggestbreak so far." Technically, the 41-year-old New Yorkerhas been an actor for only sixyears. But he has been in andout of show business since heand a partner developed acomedy act for Catskillresorts when they were still inhigh school. Right after highschool, Wynn bought himself asmall store, "Greeting cards, gifts and religious items" butsold it off to return to per¬forming. All in all the actendured for eight years. Witha few intermissions such as

Army service for him, twoyears at New York Universitytrying to buckle down to abusiness major. No go, hebecame a talent agent insteadof a storekeeper again. And what turned him to

acting? "My marriage brokeup suddenly. My wife wentback to her home in Californiaand took our son. In mydepression — and I wasdepressed — I went one day toRoosevelt Raceway andbumped into a friend whoproduced plays on LongIsland. "Why don't you giveme an audition?' I asked.Well, three weeks later he did.Had me read both the Felixand Oscar roles in 'The OddCouple' and hired me.Which role? Oscar, of cour¬se." (He has reprised the rolesince in Texas). With his first break-througn

into acting, Wynn closed outthe family-sized spread in thepleasant residential section ofKew Gardens and moved intoa studio apartment in theheart of Manhattan. "And Iapplied myself to actingand I made the rounds every

iyi. " He got lucky withcommercials, having ap¬peared in over a dozen majorones. He has a long-rangegoal. "I would like to playJimmy in 'Look Back inAnger.' But, of course, I willalways like doing comedies, too." Good thing, too, becausehis short-range goal is to keephimself busy, earning and

cheered up.It is strange that the big talk

shows haven't discovered himyet. His dour humor wearswell. He doesn't strain to sayfunny things but the thingshe says just come out funny.A week after "Lotsa Luck"

fin shed filming, Wynn cameEast; a refresher to hisRunyonesque spirit. "I'm acity type. California is aterrible place for me when I'mnot working. I was starting tolearn to play tennis. My ladyfriend said I should get in¬volved and she bought me aracket." He doesn't name the

"lady friend." Yes, she is stillthere at the moment but she

prefers New York, toom Butshe is an actress and ap¬parently practical enough torealize that's where the workis.

Art is resigned to goingWest, again, if work beckons. In fact he went out a year agowithout an assignment just tolook around. "I was sitting inSchwab's Drug Store — Ireally was— like Lana Turnerwithout the sweater, when agood friend came up and saidhe was reading a pilot script

Answer: Most actors do soapopera a I for the money and b) tokeep busy. Miss Stevens isdoing it because she loves thiswhirl at acting. She certainlywould not seem to need themoney for she lives on thepalatial scale of old-time moviestars.

Gracious, bright and bubbly, actress Ruta I-ee has long beenin demand as a celebritypanelist on game shows. Nowshe has moved up to dailyheadliner rank as the co-hosti along with Alex Trebek) ofNBC's new mid-morning "HighRollers."As is now the custom with

game shows, all five of a week'ssegments are now taped in asingle day ... and a lucky breakthat is proving for Ruta. Hersummer theater bookings runthrough September. (In Julyshe starred in "Bells AreRinging" in Worth and rightnow she is off to St. Louis with a

production of "GoodbyeCharlie.")She is an unusual young

woman. Slender, blonde, prettyand always fastidiouslygroomed but never seeming tofuss about her looks. She is wellorganized and energetic withoutbeing abrasive about it. She isnow serving her fourth term as

president of The Thalians — a

group of performers who aiddisturbed children — and she isheart-and-soul dedicated to thecause. When she has the time, she travels around for theAmerican Cancer Societycrusading against smoking.Back in her starlet days, Ruta

suddenly made newspaperheadlines of a happy sort whenshe crusaded to get her 90-yearold grandmother sprung frombehind the Iron Curtain to liveout the rest of her years withher descendants in the U.S.Kuta wasted no time on redtape. She personally contactedThe Kremlin and to everybody'ssurprise (except maybe Ruta'siit got the ball rolling. (Theelderly woman did get to theU.S. where she survived untilthe age of 94).Both Ruta's mother and

father are of LHhuaniandescent. She herself was born inMontreal, Canada and livedthere until she was 12. Then herparents heeded her pleas torelocate in California so shecould train to be an actress andgo into movies.
