Head Coach Steve Cleveland3rd year (50-37)

Cleveland’s Career Year-by-Year

In his third season at Fresno State, Steve Cleveland has quickly turned the basketball program around, leading the Bulldogs back to the postseason for the first time in five years. In his second season, Cleveland led the Bull-dogs to a 22-10 overall record and a berth into the postseason NIT Tournament. The 22 wins marks the most wins for the basketball program since the 1995-96 season and is only the 16th time in school history a coach has led a team to over 20 wins. Cleveland and the Bulldogs began the sea-son 7-0 and received votes in both national polls twice during the season. Before heading into WAC play, the Bulldogs carried an 11-2 record. Fresno State finished WAC play 10-6 and alone in third place.Fresno State ranked No. 9 in the nation in 3-pointers made per game and Cleveland’s up-tempo offense had the Bulldogs averaging 71.3 points per game. Cleveland and the Bulldogs had two players earn All-WAC honors in Dominic McGuire and Quinton Hosley and McGuire was selected in the second round of the NBA Draft. McGuire also set the single-season blocks record with 114 and ranked No. 5 in the nation. In 2005-06, Cleveland saw two players gar-ner all-conference accolades, including one who would go on to be named to the WAC All-New-comer Team in his first season at Fresno State. While the Bulldogs set a new home court record for wins (12), which Cleveland broke in his second season with 15 wins, and set/tied 19 new arena marks, Cleveland guided the program to a winning season for the ninth time by a first-year coach as well as establishing the fifth-most wins (15) by a first-year Bulldog skip-per. A trio of Bulldogs not only finished the year as the WAC leaders in assists (Kevin Bell), 3-pointers (Ja’Vance Coleman) and steals (Quinton Hosley) but the same three also would be nationally-ranked throughout the season in their respective categories. Fresno State, which led the conference in four statistical categories overall, finished as the top scoring team in the WAC with a 73.8 point per game average. In three seasons at Fresno State, Cleveland has a record of 34-7(.829) at the Save Mart Center. Over, Coach Cleveland is in his 11th season as a Division I coach.

2007-08 Fresno State Roster

Bell Climbs Record BooksFresno State senior point guard Kevin Bell is working his way up the record books this season in his final year in a Bulldog uniform. Bell moved into second place in Fresno State history for assists. He is 19 assists away from passing Dominick Young for the all-time record. Bell has led the WAC in assists the last two sea-sons and his assist total has gone up all three years he has been here. He’ll need to average 4.8 assists per game to catch Young. In addition to handing out assists, Bell has moved into Fresno State’s top 25 in career points. At his current pace of more than 18 points per game, he will finish in top 20 all-time for Bulldog scor-ers. If Bell leads the WAC in assists again this season, it would mark the 11th time in the last 15 years a Bulldog player has led the league in assists. Others to leads the WAC in assists were: Shantay Legans, Tito Maddox, Demetrius Porter, Chris Her-ron, Dominick Young and Brian Santiago.

In addition, he joined a select group of former Bulldog scoring greats in-cluding Courtney Alexander, Melvin Ely, Mau-rice Talbot, Lucius Davis and Lonnie Hughey, among others. Hector Hernandez and Miller are the only current Dogs with 30 points in their careers. Hernandez had 31 last season against Cal Poly.

Ed Ferreira Farewell TourAfter 28 seasons on the Bulldog bench, Fres-no State’s long-time athletics trainer has an-nounced this will be his final season. Ferreira is retiring from Fresno State in August 2008. 2007-08 Notebook

For most college students, the sum-mer is spent relaxing. For most college student-athletes the summer is spent working on their game, but not like Hector Hernandez did. While many Fresno State student athletes lift weights, run drills and have summer workouts against one another, Hernandez was doing plenty in facing some of the world’s best talent. Hernandez, a senior at Fresno State, played last summer for his country on the Mexican National Team. Hernandez spent his summer playing with the best players from Mexico, while playing against some of the best basketball players in the world. Instead of lounging by the pool during the summer, Hernandez spent two months working out with the Mexican National Team, training near his hometown of Chi-huahua, Mexico. After several exhibition games in Mexico and a couple in El Paso, Texas, the Mexican National Team was off to its main goal, competing in the FIBA Americas Tournament held in Las Vegas. “I learned a lot playing with the Mexican National Team and it was a great honor to represent my country,” Hernan-dez said. “The experience I gained this summer will definitely help me down the road.” While in Las Vegas, Hernandez and the Mexican National Team went 2-5 overall. While their goal of qualifying for the Olympics didn’t happen this year for Hernandez and Mexico, a lot of progress was made from both sides. Hernandez played in all seven games, which were held at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas and had a couple of those games on national television. Hernandez had the chance to play against Team USA, which included LeBron James, Kobe Bryant and Carmelo Anthony on national television and scored six points against Team USA. The 6-9 forward also helped Mexico defeat Puerto Rico and Venezuela in the tournament and Hernandez scored a tour-nament-high eight points in 15 minutes of action against Canada. “It was a great experience to be on the same floor as some of the best players in the world,” Hernandez said. “That was an experience I will always remember.” But after a long summer, Hernandez is excited to be backing Fresno and is excited to get his senior season underway. Hernandez returns as the team’s leading scorer from last year, when he averaged 11.2 points and 5.2 rebounds per game.
