ABOUT THE EAGLESNorthwest is two wins shy of its third consecutive 20-win season at 18-2. Th e Eagles are third in the Cascade Collegiate Conference, and one of three conference teams in the national top-11. Th e experienced roster full of upperclassmen, including four starting seniors, have ex-celled this season at sharing the ball and making their shots from behind the arc. NU is third in NAIA Div. 2 in assist to turnover ratio. Northwest is also fi ft h in the country in assists per game with 17.3. Th e Eagles are also seventh and ninth in the nation in fi eld goal percentage defense (.404) and scoring margin (14.3). Rich Skillman leads the conference in steals and is second in the country in steals per game (3.1) and total steals (63). Th e Eagles have six play-ers averaging over nine points per game, led Jordan Call’s 14.8 per outing.

THE LAST TIME OUTTh e No. 2 Oregon Tech men’s basketball team won its 21st game of the season Sunday, 88-78, over No. 25 Eastern Oregon University. Oregon Tech shot 48 percent from the fi eld, includ-ing 53 percent in the second half. Th e Owls made 11 of their 25 three-point attempts, and 17 of their 24 free throws. EOU outrebounded Tech, 43-33, but had 15 turnovers to OIT’s 10. Oregon Tech had a 21-16 assist advantage. Th e game featured three ties and six lead changes, all in the fi rst half. Eastern had the early advantage, taking its largest lead of the game at the 14:46 mark of the fi rst half, 15-10. Tech responded with an 8-0 run, and took a six-point lead with 8:50 left in the opening half aft er a Clarke three-pointer. Th e Owls had their largest lead of the half at halft ime, 44-31. Anthony Brown scored a career-high 21 points to lead all scor-ers. Th e junior was 8-of-13 from the fi eld. He added a game-high 14 rebounds for his fourth career double-double. Trent Roos had 18 points, making fi ve three-point attempts.

MOUNTAINEERS SLIDE IN POLLTh e Eastern Oregon University men’s basketball team received three votes in this week’s NAIA Div. 2 Top 25 poll released Monday. Th e Mountaineers (13-7, 6-5 Cascade Collegiate Conference) fell in a pair of road games at Southern Oregon and Oregon Tech over the weekend. SOU held off Eastern, 80-77, and Tech picked up an 88-78 win. EOU was ranked No. 25 in last week’s poll. OIT (21-2, 10-1) moved to the No. 1 spot in the country following its home weekend sweep over Th e College of Idaho and EOU. Warner Pacifi c College (17-4, 9-1) remained No. 8 following its overtime win at Concordia. And, Northwest University went from No. 12 to No. 11 aft er a win over Corban University. Southern Oregon is three spots out of the poll with 45 votes.

ABOUT THE GEODUCKSTh e Evergreen State College has struggled so far this season winning only one of its fi rst 20 games. Th e Geoducks have yet to win a Cascade Collegiate Conference game. TESC has also been plagued with injuries this season and have been playing with a limited roster for much of the year. Patrick Lewis leads Evergreen with an average of 11.75 points and 7.65 rebounds per game. He is eighth in NAIA Div. 2 in off ensive rebounds per game (3.7). Travis Wagner is throwing 1.95 assists per game and making 2.65 three-pointers per outing, which is second in the conference. Th e Geoducks are 10th in the country in three-pointers made per game with 8.7. TESC is also 11th in the nation in total three-pointers made this season with 175. Evergreen shoots an average of 29.2 three-pointers per contest.

Kevan West, SR, F (Concordia)West helped the Cavaliers earn a split last week with a win over Multnomah University and an overtime loss to No.8 Warner Pacifi c College. He totaled 48 points, 18 rebounds, and nine assists last week. West shot 69 percent from the fi eld and made seven of his 11 three-pointers.

KIRKLAND, Wash. – Th e No. 10 Northwest University men’s basketball team won a Top 25 matchup over No. 23 Eastern Oregon University Friday, 93-83.

Th e Eagles (15-0, 5-0 Cascade Collegiate Conference) continue their best start in school history with the vic-tory. Northwest remains the only undefeated team in NAIA Div. 2. NU also snapped a four-game skid against the Mountaineers.

Northwest was led by Michael Greene’s 20 points. Th e sophomore was 9-for-11 from the fi eld. He added nine rebounds. Rich Skillman scored 16 points, grabbed 15 rebounds, and was one assist shy of a triple double. Jordan Call recorded 18 points behind 4-of-6 shooting from behind the arc. Jason Waltman and Tyler Mende-zona each added 11 points.

A Jamar Johnson three-pointer at the 16:51 mark of the fi rst half gave Eastern a 10-3 early advantage. It would be the largest lead EOU would have in the game. Th e Mountaineers led by seven three times in the fi rst half with the last time coming aft er a three-pointer by Ma-son Jones with 10:13 remaining in the fi rst half.

Eastern led 33-27 with 5:37 left in the fi rst half aft er a Johnson three-pointer. Th e Eagles would then respond with a 6-0 run to even the score aft er a Call jumper with 4:22 remaining in the half. Two minutes later, Skillman gave NU its fi rst lead aft er a steal and dunk. Northwest would take a 46-41 lead into halft ime aft er trailing nearly 17 of the fi rst 20 minutes.

Th e Eagles created their decisive margin in the fi rst three minutes of the second half, opening on an 11-0 run. Northwest would continue to stretch the margin to its largest lead of the game, 69-47, capped by a three-pointer by Ahmaad Cook with 13:53 remaining

in regulation.

Down 22 points, the Mountaineers would then make a big run of their own. Eastern would reel off 18 unan-swered points over the next four minutes to close the gap to 69-65 with 10:07 left in the game.

A pair of Eagle three-pointers gave Northwest another double-digit lead, but EOU responded again. Th e Mountaineers went on a 6-0 run to close within four points with 5:36 remaining in regulation, Eastern would come no closer.

Northwest fi nished the game shooting 49.3 from the fi eld, while Eastern Oregon was 49.1. Th e Eagles made 12 of their 30 three-point attempts; EOU hit 11 of its 20. Th e Mountaineers were 18-for-21 from the free-throw line, and NU was 9-of-16.

Th e Eagles outrebounded Eastern, 40-30. Th e Moun-taineers entered the game as the nation’s best off ensive rebounding team, averaging 18 per game, but it was NU that fi nished with 17 off ensive rebounds to EOU’s seven.

Eastern Oregon (10-5, 3-3) committed 14 turnovers, while Northwest had 13. Th e Eagles threw 20 assists and the Mountaineers had fi ve. NU also had a 10-7 steals advantage.

Aft er scoring 28 points in Th ursday’s win at Th e Evergreen State College, Johnson scored 26 to lead EOU. Th e senior was 6-for-9 from the fi eld, 4-of-4 from three-point range, and 10-for-11 from the free-throw line. Jones added a season-high 14 points. JaMier Morris scored 11 points. Ervin Felder had eight points and a team-high eight rebounds.

OLYMPIA, Wash. – Th e No. 23 Eastern Oregon Uni-versity men’s basketball team won its 10th game of the season Th ursday at Th e Evergreen State College, 90-79.

Th e Mountaineers (10-3, 3-2 Cascade Collegiate Conference) got a pair of 20-point performances for the fi rst time since Feb. 14, 2009. Jamar Johnson scored a game-high 28 points and Cody Th urmond added 24 points. Neil Fryer and Kris Groce achieved the feat in the 2008-09 season with 24 and 20 point eff orts.

Johnson was 10-of-18 from the fi eld and 4-for-7 from behind the perimeter. Th urmond was 10-for-14 from the fi eld. Johnson scored 16 second half points, while Th urmond had 18 in the second half. Th urmond’s scor-ing total was a new career-high. Johnson added seven rebounds and Th urmond threw six assists.

Ervin Felder added 17 points and nine rebounds. Th e sophomore was 8-of-10 from the fi eld. He added three steals. Felder came into the game leading the conference in rebounds and sixth in the nation in off ense rebounds per game. He averaged four off ensive rebounds per game and fi nished with four Th ursday.

Patrick Lewis’ jumper to even the score at two gave the game its only tie. With the exception of 70 seconds

of the game, Eastern had the lead. Leading 13-10, the Mountaineers went on an 8-0 run to take a 21-10 with 9:51 left in the fi rst half. EOU stretched the run to 18-4 and took its largest lead of the game, 31-14, at the 6:21 mark of the fi rst half. Evergreen closed with nine points and trailed 36-27 at the half.

A Johnson jumper with 14:41 left in regulation gave Eastern Oregon a 54-41 advantage. TESC would respond with a 12-2 run off of four consecutive three-pointers, two coming from Travis Wagner. Th e three-point gap would be as close as the Geoducks would come. EOU answered the Evergreen run with a 10-0 run of its own to have a 13-point cushion. Eastern would take two 15-point leads in the fi nal eight minutes of play, and TESC would come as close as eight twice.

Marice Tolliver led the Geoducks (1-12, 0-4) with 20 points. Th e senior was 8-of-20 from the fi eld. He threw 10 assists, and fi nished two rebounds shy of a triple double. Tolliver also had three steals. Mike Derosier added 13 points, Wagner and Patrick Lewis had 12, and Larry Green and Elzie Dickens each had 10.

Th e Mountaineers were 49 percent from the fi eld, 5-for-21 from three-point range, and 17-of-22 from the free-throw line. TESC was 46 percent from the fi eld, 10-of-23 from behind the perimeter, and 9-of-14 from the free-throw line.

WEEK THIRTEEN: NORTHWEST AND THE EVERGREEN STATE

BASKETBALL HAS WEEKLY SHOWTh e Eastern Oregon University basketball programs will have their own radio talk show on Monday’s 12-1 p.m. on KUBQ 98.7 FM. Moun-taineer fans can tune into 98.7 FM and listen to EOU basketball analysis, game recaps, game pre-views, and interviews with coaches and players. Th e whole hour is devoted to Eastern Oregon women’s and men’s basketball.

LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARIESEastern Oregon is one of four teams to have made it to the past four second rounds at the NAIA Div. 2 National Tournament. Two pro-grams in those four, Oregon Tech and EOU, are from the Cascade Collegiate Conference. Th ere are only 10 teams that have made the national tournament in each of the past four seasons, including Eastern Oregon.

Friday’s Projected Starters

RETRO WEEKEND RETURNS TO QUINNTh e Eastern Oregon University Sports Informa-tion and Marketing Department has announced the return of Retro Weekend Friday and Satur-day. Th e third annual event encourages fans to wear attire specifi c to the themed decade of the evening. Every fan who wears themed attire will receive a giveaway. Th e Mountaineer women and men will wear throwback uniforms again this year. Friday, EOU hosts Northwest University on ‘70s Night. Th e Evergreen State College visits Saturday on ‘80s Night in Quinn Coliseum. Mu-sic from those decades will play each night. Fans that are not quite brave enough to wear retro attire can support Eastern by wearing royal blue to the games. A Kindle will be given away Friday night, and an iPod will be given away Saturday. Prizes from many local businesses will be given away all weekend.
