ABOUT THE RAIDERSSouthern Oregon is off to a fantastic start to its season. The Raiders were

picked last in the Cascade Collegiate Conference preseason coaches’ poll, but sit thirdin the current standings and are one of only three teams to have swept through theopening weekend of league play. SOU is sixth in NAIA Div. 2 in field goal percentagedefense (0.378), 12th in three-point field goal percentage (0.402), 13th in free throw per-centage (0.744), and 13th in scoring defense per game (63.8).

LAST TIME OUTThe Mountaineers won their 10th game of the season with a 73-66 win over No.

14 Northwest University. EOU trailed by 10 points in the top 10 battle, but rallied to winthe largest deficit in the Isaac Williams’ coaching era. Thomas McCarthy scored 18points to lead Eastern in the win. Eastern Oregon has now won 13 of the past 15games against Top 25 teams in La Grande. The prior evening, the Mountaineersopened conference play with a 77-59 win over Evergreen State. JC Cook scored a sea-son-high 22 points to lead EOU. Eastern shot 50 percent from the field and 60 percentfrom behind the perimeter. The series between the Geoducks and the Mountaineers isnow even at 12 to 12.

ABOUT THE HUSTLIN’ OWLSOregon Tech, the preseason conference favorites, have won four straight head-

ing into the weekend. The Owls continue their dominance over opponents at home andhave won 43 consecutive games in Danny Miles Court. OIT averages a national best11.3 three-pointers per game, making a NAIA Div. 2 best 136 total three-pointers.Joseph Foster leads Tech with 289 total points, which is the fourth-most in the country.The Owls take care of the ball when they have it with a second-ranked 1.58 assist toturnover ratio.

ASHLAND, Ore. -- Jordan Gregg recorded his 14th career double-double in a 75-57 EasternOregon University men's basketball victory at Southern Oregon Saturday.

Gregg scored 17 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in the Mountaineer road win. Eastern(15-6) (8-3) bounced back after falling at Oregon Tech Friday. The win also avenged a lossin Ashland last season when EOU was ranked No. 5 in the country.

Josh Cottle scored a game-high 18 points for No. 18 Eastern Oregon (15-6) (8-3). DanStafford finished 17 points for EOU. Josh Landsverk scored 16 points.

The Mountaineers shot 53 percent from the field, but 25 percent from behind the perimeter.Eastern's defense held the Raiders to 39 percent from the floor and 29 percent from three-point range. EOU forced 11 turnovers and committed 12. The Mountaineers outreboundedSOU, 36-24.

Humphrey Jackson led Southern (10-10) (2-9) with 13 points, Drew Herrera and DavidGrant each added 11 points.

Eastern Oregon used a 17-2 first half run to breakaway from the Raiders, after an 18-18 tie.Southern Oregon did make a run in the second half, cutting the lead to single digits twice,but couldn't get any closer.

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. -- The NAIA Div. 2 Game of the Week lived up to its hype Fridaynight, as the No. 3 Oregon Tech men’s basketball team edged No. 18 Eastern Oregon, 72-67.

The Hustlin’ Owls had it’s largest lead, 50-30, with 16:03 remaining in regulation, beforeEastern would close the gap to 68-67 with 1:14 left.

Oregon Tech (19-3) (8-2) won its 31st consecutive game at home, the second longeststreak in the nation. EOU still has not won in Klamath Falls since Feb. 16, 1979. Eastern(14-6) (7-3) ends its four-game win streak, as OIT extends its to eight games, the longest inthe Cascade Collegiate Conference.

Tech jumped out to a 14-7 lead with 12:46 remaining in the first half, before EOU would tiethe score at 26 with 5:37 left before halftime. The Hustlin’ Owls then went on a 10-0 run andwould lead at the half, 38-28. It marked the first time in five years the Mountaineers wouldnot have the halftime lead.

OIT went on a 12-2 run after the intermission to take its largest lead, 50-30, after a MikeNieraeth three-pointer. Eastern slowly began to chip away at the lead from there. EOU cutthe lead to single digits for the first time with 6:46 left in regulation, 62-53. Tech had the leadback to 66-56 a minute later, but that was its last double digit lead.

Eastern’s Cody Thurmond hit a three-pointer with 2:04 left to make the score, 67-65,Oregon Tech. Brent Johnson then put OIT back up three after hitting the second of two freethrows with 1:35 remaining. Josh Cottle then cut the lead to one point after hitting a pair offree throws on the other end of the court.

Johnson missed a pair of free throws on the following Owls’ possession, but Eastern couldnot convert on their offensive possession. Mike Nieraeth put Oregon Tech up three with twofree throws with 33 seconds left. Eastern’s three-pointer on the ensuing possession wouldcome up short, and Tech would hit another pair of free throws to end the game.

The Hustlin’ Owls’ Justin Parnell led all scorers with 17 points on 5 of 11 shooting from thefield. Myles Daley added 13 points, and Nieraeth finished with 11. Eastern was led byJordan Gregg’s 15 points and game-high 12 rebounds. Josh Cottle and Thurmond each had12 points for the Mountaineers, and Steve Sawyers finished with 10.

Oregon Tech shot 53 percent from the field, and EOU shot 39 percent. Both teams strug-gled behind the arc, OIT was 23 percent and Eastern was 27 percent. The Mountaineersoutrebounded Tech, 37-28, but committed 13 turnovers to the Owls’ six.

Oregon Tech now sits tied in first place in the conference standings with The EvergreenState. Warner Pacific is a half-game behind in third place, while EOU slides to fourth place.

have had battles over the last few years. The158th meeting between the Oregon Institute ofTechnology men's basketball team andEastern Oregon University will feature a pairof top 25 teams for only the eighth time. NEW START TIMES FOR 2010-11A new doubleheader format featuring

men’s and women’s teams alternating timeslots in conference play headlines the releaseof the 2010-11 Cascade CollegiateConference men’s and women’s basketballschedules, CCC commissioner Dave Haglundannounced.

The first half concludes Jan. 15; thesecond half runs from Jan. 21 to Feb. 19.The CCC recently voted to modify the struc-ture of its conference doubleheaders, whichhistorically have featured the women playingat 5:30 p.m. followed by the men at 7:30 p.m.Beginning with the upcoming campaign, gen-ders will split the two time slots. In the firsthalf of conference play in 2010-11, men willplay at 5:30 p.m. and women at 7:30 p.m.; inthe second half, the genders will flip timeslots. Men’s and women’s teams will flip theirplaying orders on a yearly basis.

DIALING LONG DISTANCEEastern Oregon is hitting its share of

shots from behind the perimeter this season.The Mountaineers are second in NAIA Div. 2in three-pointers made per game (10.5), andtotal three-pointers made (116). EOU is 11thin the country in three-point percentage(40%). Thomas McCarthy is 10th in NAIA Div.2 with 34 three-pointers, making 3.0 per gamewhich is 13th in the nation. MOUNTAINEERS LOVE FEBRUARYEastern Oregon has closed the season strong the past

few seasons. The Mountaineers have gone 14-3 in the month ofFebruary the past two years. Only Oregon Tech has done a bet-ter job finishing the regular season strong. The Hustlin’ Owls are15-3 in February the past two seasons. Warner Pacific is 12-5and Evergreen is 12-5 over the same amount of time.

BACK AMONG ELITE COMPANYThe Mountaineers moved up to No. 8 in the NAIA

Div. 2 Top 25 this week, thanks to their great start to the 2010-11 season. EOU is in the top 10 for the 14th time inschool history. Eastern last appeared in the top 10 before thisseason on March 4, 2009 when it was No. 10. The No. 8 rank-ing is the highest ranking since Dec. 1, 2008 when theMountaineers were No. 5.

LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARIESEastern Oregon is one of five teams to have made it

to the past three Sweet 16 rounds at the NAIA Div. 2 NationalTournament. Two programs in those five, Oregon Tech andEOU, are from the Cascade Collegiate Conference. There areonly a dozen teams that have made the national tournamentin each of the past three years, including Eastern.

FAMILIAR FOESEOU and Southern Oregon meet for the 168th time

Friday. The Mountaineers have met only Western Oregon moretimes, 187. SOU holds a 95-72 all-time lead in the series. Fivegames since 2000 have been decided by 10 or fewer points, andthree games have been decided by five or fewer points.
