ABOUT THE WOLVES

Cardinal Stritch plays with a shorter lineup, having its tallest player since Dec. 3, listed at 6-6. " e Wolves have eight underclassmen and two seniors. CSU returns six players that saw time in last year’s ! rst round loss to Oregon Tech. Stritch is fourth in the country in assists per game (16.8), ! / h in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.32), sixth in ! eld goal percentage defense (.398), and eighth in scoring defense (62.6) and scoring margin (+14.2). Cardinal Stritch’s key win this season came on Dec. 9, on a neutral = oor, beating No. 3 Davenport, 70-59. Stritch rides a 12-game win streak into national tournament. CSU is 8-3 against teams with winning records this season and 1-1 versus teams currently ranked in the top 25. " e Wolves’ ! ve losses were by a combined 43 points.

THE LAST TIME OUT

" e top-seeded Oregon Tech men’s basketball team held o+ an Eastern Oregon University rally in the Cascade Collegiate Conference tournament semi! nals, 91-79. Oregon Tech’s Bobby Hunter led all scorers with 24 points. He was 7-of-17 from the ! eld and 9-for-10 from the free-throw line. " e freshman had 17 points at hal/ ime. Scotty Riddle added 18 points. David Clarke totaled 15 points, nine rebounds and six assists. Kyle Gomez and Jason Gamb-lin each had 12 points. " e Owls beat EOU for the seventh straight time, and 22nd time in a row inside Danny Miles Court, dating back to 1979. " e loss ended Eastern’s ! ve-game win streak. " e Mountaineers shot 41 percent from the ! eld in the game, making nine of their 22 three-point attempts, and 14 of their 17 free throws. Jamar Johnson led EOU with 13 points, while Anthony Brown and Cody " urmond each had 12. Brown and Je+ Ranstrom each grabbed seven rebounds, and " urmond threw six assists.

EASTERN QUALIFIES FOR FIFTH STRAIGHT NATIONAL TOURNEY

Eastern Oregon makes the national tournament for the ! / h straight season and sixth all-time. " e Mountaineers have a 5-4 record at the NAIA national tournament all-time. EOU will look to advance to the second round for the ! / h consecutive time, a feat accomplished by only three other teams. " e CCC was one of three conferences to land a quartet of quali-! ers in the ! eld. " e Cascade Conference has quali! ed four teams to the national tourna-ment for the fourth straight season and ! / h out of the past six seasons. " is year’s quali! ers are identical to those in 2011. Oregon Tech, Northwest, Warner Paci! c and Eastern Oregon return to Point Lookout, Missouri, and Keeter Gymnasium for the 21st annual tournament.

ABOUT CSU’s LINEUP

Nick Ford, a 5-9 junior guard, is seventh in the country in assists per game (5.8) and eighth in assist-to-turnover ratio. Derek Semenas leads CSU in scoring with 16 points per outing. " e sophomore was named All-CCAC a/ er shooting 46 percent from the ! eld and hitting 49 three-pointers. Navjot Singh was named the CCAC Player of the Year a/ er averaging 14.1 points, 6.9 rebounds, 2.94 assists and 1.48 steals per game. Derek Woel+ er leads the Wolves averaging 7.24 rebounds per outing. Tony Smit was the conference’s Freshman of the Year scoring 9.52 points per contest, shooting 49 percent from the ! eld and 48 percent from be-hind the arc. Cardinal Stritch’s head coach, Drew Diener, is in his third season and has been named the CCAC Coach of the Year all three years. Diener’s three-year record is 76-24.

MOUNTAINEERS LOVE FEBRUARY

Eastern Oregon has closed the season strong the past few seasons. EOU has gone 28-5 in the month of February since 2009. Oregon Tech is 29-5 in February the past three seasons. EOU also posts one of the best records of any confer-ence team through January and February the past four seasons. " e Mountaineers are 62-16 over those two months, while OIT is 68-12.

EOU CREEPS CLOSER TO TOP 25

" e Eastern Oregon University men’s basketball team is two spots out of the NAIA Div. 2 Top 25, which was released Wednesday. " e Mountain-eers received 58 votes in the latest national poll. EOU received 32 more votes than the prior poll, but four more votes than the 28th place team. Eastern needed to be 27th to qualify for the national tournament.

LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARIES

Eastern Oregon is one of four teams to have made it to the past four second rounds at the NAIA Div. 2 National Tournament. Two pro-grams in those four, Oregon Tech and EOU, are from the Cascade Collegiate Conference, Bellevue and Oklahoma Wesleyan are the other two. " ere are only seven teams that have made the last ! ve national tournaments, including this season, three from the CCC; Eastern, Warner Paci! c, OIT, Bellevue, Northwood, Indiana-Southeast, and the host College of Ozarks.
