Ans. ‘A Shady Plot’ here means a concealed or hidden storyline. It could be a story that is mysteriousand difficult to understand, and in which a ghost plays an important part.

BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO THE STORY

‘A Shady Plot’ is a ghost story, but there is no element of horror in it. It is rather an amusing storyabout a writer named John Hallock whose ghost stories have become very popular. In this story, thewriter himself narrates how he got the interesting plots for his stories. Through the story, we come toknow that it is a female ghost who has been inspiring the writer with interesting plots. There are otherghosts also who do the same thing of inspiring the writers. They have formed an organisation of theirown and call it ‘The Writer’s Inspiration Bureau’. One day, the female ghost comes to inform JohnHallock that she would no more help him with his plots because all the members of the Bureau havedecided to go on strike. And the reason for this strike is the use of Ouija boards by a large number ofpeople. These Ouija (pronounced Weeje) boards don’t let the ghosts any rest and they have decided togo on strike till their use is stopped. The female ghost asks John Hallock to make all his friends andacquaintances stop using the Ouija boards. John Hallock’s wife is also an enthusiast of Ouija boardsand through them, she comes to know that her husband has been talking to a woman named Helen.She suspects him of having relations with another woman and decides to leave him. But just beforeshe leaves the home, she sees her husband trying to hide someone from her. She thrusts her husbandback to see who it is. There is a woman who tells Hallock’s wife that she is Helen and then disappearsfrom the view. The writer’s wife falls into his arms and he kisses her.

WHAT THESE OUIJA BOARDS ARE

‘A Shady Plot’ is a supernatural story in which Ouija boards play a very important role. Whatare these Ouija boards ? It is central to the understanding of the story. Now let’s see what theseboards are.

Ouija board is the trade name of a device used in communicating with supernatural creatures likeghosts and fairies. The name comes from a German phrase which means ‘yes’. The Ouija board consistsof a rectangular board of wood. Letters of the alphabet are inscribed on it along the longer side,in the shape of a wide half-moon. A heart-shaped board, much smaller in size, is placed on theOuija board. This small board has roller wheels (castors) fixed to it. These wheels enable the board toslide freely.

While using the Ouija board, each participant places their fingers on the small board which thenslides about because of the resultant pressure. The letters appearing in the wide circular hole of thesmall board sometimes spell out words or even sentences. These words / sentences are taken as answersgiven by the supernatural spirit (called Ouija) to the questions of the participants.

For example, one of the participants asks :

“Ouija, please tell me who stole my bike.’’

The participants have already put their fingers on the small board and the board begins to rotateunder their pressure.

Suppose while moving, the hole of small board first shows T, then O, and then M.Thus the Ouija’s answer to the question will be taken as T–O–M (Tom).

5. I hadn’t the shade of an idea, but at the timethat didn’t worry me in the least. You see I hadoften been like that before and in the end thingshad always come my way — I didn’t in the leastknow how or why. It had all been rathermysterious. You understand I didn’t specialize inghost stories, but more or less they seemed tospecialize in me. A ghost story had been the firstfiction I had written. Curious how that idea for aplot had come to me out of nowhere after I hadchased inspiration in vain for months ! Even nowwhenever Jenkins wanted a ghost, he called onme. 6. So I went home and sat down before mydesk and sucked at the end of my pencil andwaited, but nothing happened. Pretty soon mymind began to wander off on other things,decidedly unghostly and material things, such asmy wife’s shopping and how on earth1 I was goingto cure her of her alarming tendency to take everynew fad2 that came along and work it to death.But I realized that would never get me any place,so I went back to staring at the ceiling.

7. “This writing business is delightful, isn’t it ?”I said sarcastically at last, out loud, too. You see, Ihad reached the stage of imbecility3 when I wastalking to myself.

8. “Yes,’’ said a voice at the other end of theroom, “I should say it is !”

9. I admit I jumped. Then I looked around.

10. It was twilight by this time and I hadforgotten to turn on the lamp. The other end ofthe room was full of shadows and furniture. I satstaring at it and presently noticed something justtaking shape. It was exactly like watching one ofthose moving picture cartoons being put together.First an arm came out, then a bit of sleeve of a stiffwhite shirtwaist4, then a leg and a plaid5 skirt, untilat last there she was complete,— whoever she was.

She was long and angular6 with enormousfishy eyes behind big bone-rimmed spectacles, andher hair in a tight wad at the back of her head(yes, I seemed able to see right through her head)and a jaw — well, it looked so solid that for themoment I began to doubt my very own senses andbelieve she was real after all.
