It is with great pleasure to look out the window and watch it rain while I try to find something of interest to write about this week. Having spent sometime in the great outdoors this weekend it is quite obvious that the crops need rain very badly. The corn and beans that have had some rain are looking very good and if the rains continue the crops look to be very good. Lets hope the rains will stay around for a while.

Remember school is out so be on the lookout for all the kids out on bikes and don’t be texting while you are driving. And parents do your son or daughter a big

favor and have some form of lights put on your kid’s bikes, both front and rear, especially if they are out delivering newspapers early in the morning.

The cost can’t be very much compared to a visit to the emergency room, let alone the injury to your child. Give it some serious thought.

Congratulations to all the new graduates out there and lets hope they can find the jobs they are looking for. It will not be an easy task that much is for sure. Until next week lets hope we can enjoy this rain for a few more days and you guys out there, why not take the little lady out for supper tonight.

That’s my Opinion.....What’s yours??

401(k) Review and Rollover Can Be Rewarding

Your 401(k) offers tax-deductible contributions, tax-deferred growth of earnings potential and a variety of investment options — so it’s a great tool for building retirement savings. Yet like all tools, your 401(k) must be used properly to get the best results. That’s why you should review your 401(k) at least annually and make whatever adjustments are needed.

Depending on where you work, you may get some 401(k) review help from your plan provider. But if that assistance isn’t available, you might want to consult with a financial professional to make sure you’re getting the maximum benefit from your plan.

As you begin to review your 401(k), your first question should probably be this:

“How much should I contribute?” At the very least, try to put in enough to receive your employer’s matching contribution, if one is offered. If you don’t earn this match, you are essentially walking away from “free money.” Beyond this, though, the amount you put into your 401(k) might depend on what other retirement savings vehicles you have available. For instance, if you’re eligible, you may also want to contribute to a Roth IRA, which offers tax-free growth potential, provided you’ve had your account for five years and don’t start taking withdrawals until you’re 59½.

Of course, it’s not only how much you put into your 401(k) that determines its success — it’s also how you choose to allocate your investment dollars. (Keep in mind that asset allocation does not guarantee a profit or protect against loss.) Your 401(k) may have a dozen or more investment choices, such as stock funds, bond funds and money market funds. To choose the right investment mix, you’ll need to consider a variety of factors, including these:

• Your age — Generally speaking, the younger you are, the more aggressive you can afford to be with your 401(k) investments, because you’ll have decades in which to potentially overcome the inevitable down periods of the market. As you get older, you may wish to invest somewhat more conservatively, but you’ll still need some growth potential in your 401(k) portfolio.

• Your goals — Everyone has different goals for retirement. You might want to retire early and travel the world, while your co-worker desires to work as long as possible and then, upon retirement, stay close to home and pursue hobbies. Because you each have different goals, with different income needs, you also may need to follow different investment strategies within your 401(k).

• Your other retirement income sources — If you have a variety of retirement income sources — a pension from another job, an IRA, a spouse with generous retirement benefits — you may need to invest differently, perhaps less aggressively, than if you had fewer options for retirement income.

Apart from putting away as much as you can into your 401(k) and choosing the right investment mix, what else can you do to get the most out of your plan? Here’s a suggestion: If you have worked at various jobs and acquired multiple 401(k)s, consider rolling them over into one account. You might save money on fees and reduce paperwork, but more importantly, you’ll be able to concentrate your resources and pursue a unified investment approach, with your investment dollars working together toward your ultimate retirement goals.

As you can see, a 401(k) review and rollover can reward you in many ways — so do whatever it takes to maximize your 401(k)’s performance.

If you’re like most people, you go through many complex thoughts and emotions when choosing investments. In fact, a field of study called “behavioral finance” is devoted to understanding why people make their investment decisions. As part of their work, behavioral finance researchers examine “biases” that affect people’s investment selections. And as an individual investor, you, too, can benefit from understanding these biases — so that you can avoid them.

Here are some of the key biases identified by behavioral finance experts: * Overconfidence — Overconfidence leads investors to believe they know the “right times” to buy and

sell investments. But if you’re constantly buying and selling in the belief that you are correctly “timing” the market, you maybe wrong many times, and you may incur more investment fees, expenses and taxes than if you simply bought quality investments and held them for the long term.

* Representativeness — If you make decisions based on preconceived ideas or stereotypes, you may be suffering from a bias called “representativeness.” For example, if you see that investments from a particular sector, such as energy, have performed particularly well in one year, you might think these types of vehicles will do just as well the next year, so you load up on them. Yet every sector will go through ups and downs, so one year’s performance cannot necessarily predict the next year’s performance. Instead of chasing “hot” investments, try to build a balanced portfolio that reflects your individual goals, risk tolerance and time horizon.

* Anchoring — Similar to representativeness, an anchoring bias occurs when investors place too much emphasis on past performance. If you own shares of XYZ stock, for instance, and the stock price hit $60 per share, you might assume XYZ will always sell for at least $60 a share. But if XYZ drops to $30 per share — perhaps as a result of a broad-based market decline — you might think it’s now “undervalued,” leading you to “snap up” even more shares. However, XYX shares could also fall due to a change in its fundamentals, such as a shake-up in the company’s management or a decline in the competitiveness of its products. As an informed investor, you need to work with your financial advisor to determine the causes of an investment’s decline and any actions you may need to take in response.

* Confirmation — If you are subject to confirmation bias, you may look for information that supports your reasons for choosing a particular investment. This type of bias can lead to faulty decision making, because you’ll end up with one-sided information. In other words, you may latch onto all the positive reasons for investing in something — such as a “hot stock” — but you may overlook the “red flags” that would cause you to think twice if you were being totally objective. To fight back against confirmation bias, take your time before making any investment decision — a quality investment will almost always be just as good a choice tomorrow as it is today.

Question: When we have a thunder storm approaching my pet trembles and hides. Can pets tell when the weather is changing or have phobias?

Answer: Animals have very keen sensory abilities. They can pick up very slight changes in smells, sounds, barometric pressure, and even ozone levels. Dogs can hear sounds four times further away than a person and cats even farther. Dogs can hear five times higher sounds than humans and cats can hear twice that of dogs. Humans have approximately 5 million olfactory cells in which to smell with, cats have 100 million, and dogs have 120 to 220 million depending on the breed (large breeds have more). Dogs and cats tend to hear and smell things that humans are incapable of. When your pet seems to “know” how you feel, they are detecting the slight shift in molecules of odors you are putting off. This works for everything from thunderstorms to moods.

Animals may exhibit signs of chronic anxiety, fear, or may suffer from a phobia when their senses pick-up changes. Research on storm anxiety in dogs has shown that 15 to 30 percent of dogs fear thunderstorms. A report by the Journal of the American Animal Hospital Association, suggest that certain breeds seem to be more likely to develop storm phobia than other dogs. The breeds that top this list are herding dogs (collies and German shepherds) and hounds (beagles and Basset hounds).

Noise phobias are difficult to treat because it is difficult or impossible to control the stimuli (thunder, fireworks, gunshots, slamming doors, etc.). According to the Humane Society of America, animal shelters across the country are accustomed to receiving ‘July 4th dogs’ show run off during firework celebrations and are rescued by animal control officers or good Samaritans. Fear is a normal reaction when an animal is faced with a situation they view as dangerous. Pets suffering from a phobia and/or chronic anxiety are often hypervigilant and easily startled. They may pant continuously, panic when they go outside, can’t be left alone or run and hide.

Surveys have shown that nearly 60 percent of pet owners say they have a pet that suffers anxiety. Of these, 70 percent say that their pet experiences anxiety “fairly often” or “frequently”; the other 30 percent say anxieties or fears are “extremely” or “very problematic”.

Signs that your pet is exhibiting fear, anxiety, or a phobia include: shaking, trembling, panting, urinating, hiding, growls or barks with ear, tail, and head lowered, panics when left alone, or salivates. Owners who notice these signs with their pet should discuss them with their veterinarian. Your veterinarian can assess the situation and determine the best therapy for your pet. Stress and anxiety can lead to aggression. Long term exposure to stress and fear is frequently the root of behavior patterns that present as aggression. The risk of illness, such as skin and digestive problems or heart disease, is also greater. Treatments may be as simple as a nutritional supplement or behavior training, or some other form of therapy. Pet owners can try calming caps or anxiety wraps or quiet association techniques. These techniques use constant physical pressure to help calm the pet. Desensitization and counter-conditioning techniques are behavior modification tools that may be used. You should consult your veterinarian for the best techniques for your pet.

Celina Couple Receives Albert HecklerAward from Cheryl Ann Programs

Louis and Dorothy Hoyng never imagined that they’d be-come involved with Cheryl Ann Programs.

They were raising three happy, healthy boys in their Celinahome. Louie operated his custom upholstery shop next door, and Dorothy worked in the high school cafeteria. They were atypical family.

Then a very atypical thing happened. Their middle son,Brian, was struck by lightning in 1981 when he was 16. Withthat bolt out of the blue, the Hoyngs’ lives changed forever.

The odds of being struck by lightning are one in 280,000,but the Hoyngs couldn’t afford to spend much time thinkingabout their terrible luck. They had a son who needed themmore than he ever had. The first years after Brian’s accident, which left him with severe disabilities, were very difficult, they said, as they searched for someone who could help themhelp Brian.

Their school district helped as much as it could. Finally, then-Superintendent Ralph Stelzer recommended a place the Hoyngsknew about but had never visited as parents: Cheryl Ann.“Cheryl Ann was the best thing that ever happened to us,”Louie Hoyng said. “It gave Brian his life back.”

The people of Cheryl Ann helped Brian with his everydaylife. They gave him a place to go and jobs to do. He made newfriends, and enjoyed everything about his experiences there,up to and including the bus ride out to Mud Pike.

“When he would see Sam Morden (his bus aide) he wouldjust smile, and the people in Adult Day Services really knewhow to make him laugh,” Dorothy Hoyng said.

It wasn’t long before the Hoyngs were finding ways to re-pay Cheryl Ann for its help. They were regular volunteers.

Louie Hoyng completed upholstery jobs for the uniqueequipment used at Cheryl Ann, and often, said SuperintendentMike Overman, “Louie would forget to send us a bill.” Healso served a term on the county MRDD board and was theboard president.

For all that, and for their tireless advocacy on behalf oftheir son, the Hoyngs received the Albert Heckler Award at

the staff appreciation banquet in March. The award is giveneach year to a Cheryl Ann family that exemplifies service andadvocacy.

“The Hoyngs both served as good examples of first-rateadvocates for their son,” Overman said. “They rarely evermissed a day spending time with him, and they always spokeup to be sure his needs were being met. They were really spe-cial parents for Brian, and really good supporters of our pro-gram.”

Brian Hoyng died in February 2008 at the age of 43. In theyears after the lightning strike he taught his family a lot aboutpatience, hope, endurance and acceptance. He introduced theHoyngs to a world they had only seen from the outside—but itwas a world where they found welcome and acceptance.

“We met some wonderful people during our years at CherylAnn,” Dorothy Hoyng said. “They worked their hearts outhelping us with Brian.”

Celina Rotary Dog Park Dedicated

BY: BETTY LOU DENNEY/HALL Opening day at the Celina Rotary Dog Park received

rave revues from the dogs. As the gates opened for the firsttime on Tuesday May 12, dogs of all sizes were seen mak-ing their way to the park to get a chance to run in over 3acres of wide open spaces of the chain-linked fenced inarea. Small dogs area is an acre and the large dogs haveover 2 acres. The new park, which is one of newest andbiggest things happening in the State Parks around the coun-try, was made possible due to the efforts of Deborha Borns,Rotary Club President. Her friend, Darlene Lynskey, is alsoworking on getting a State Dog Park in her home town ofSt. Marys. The two dog lovers along with many volunteersworked many hours with the help of the State and CraigMorton, who is the regional manager of Grand Lake St.Marys. Together they cleared away debris from the previ-ously unused land. The Park is located at the end of WestBank Road

Deb Borns saw her idea come to life with the help of theCelina Rotary Club’s major donation and businesses as wellas individuals who helped with labor and monetary dona-tions. The idea came to her after visiting another dog park.At the dedication ceremony Deb thanked many of thepeople who made the park possible. Jeff Larmore, PastRotary President and Celina City Council Member spokeas his 150 pound Newfoundland, Bentley checked out thepark. Jeff is also a large contributor to the park in honor ofthe recovery of Bentley after he had been lost for severaldays. Craig Morton, Regional Manager of State Park GandLake St. Marys and John Hunter, Assistant Chief of theDivision of Parks and Recreation also spoke at the dedica-tion ceremony. Deb concluded her speech with some wiselessons that she has learned from her own dogs. A few ofwhich were: Never leave home without your leach andyour ID. If you stare at someone long enough, you will getwhat you want. Last, if it is not wet and sloppy it is not areal kiss.

One of the many visitors enjoying running free on dedi-cation day was a lab /poodle mix owned by Dave Hochstien,

professor at Wright State University. He has other dogs athome but decided to only bring one at a time. He com-mented that this was the first time his dog had this muchexercise since he got him a year ago.

There are a few small problems to work out with thepark, such as the water faucet would not shut off and therewas a small hole under the fence in the small dog side ofthe park, which of course was found by one of the littlefurry visitors on dedication day. These problems will beeasily fixed. Memberships ($10) to Fur Ever Friends arebeing sold to help with the upkeep of the park. The use ofthe park is free to the public. One of the additions theywould like to have is benches added to the park for thecomfort of the owners.

The green stations placed around the fence for the dogwastes were given at a discount by Florida based companynamed DogiPot. Gary Brown, Assistant Operations Man-ger, heard about the plans for the park and wanted to helpby giving discounts on the pots. The company has all Oxi-biodegradable bags inside the pots for your dog waste. Garyflew in from Florida to be a part of the ribbon cutting andopening of the park. More of their products can be foundby going to: www.propet.org.

If visiting the park remember to follow the rules that areposted at the entrance. Common sense is your guide suchas:

Dogs should have their current shots The park has little dog and big dog sections, keep

dogs in their own spaces. Don’t leave dog unattended Do not bring a dog that shows aggressive behavior Keep small children under close supervision Clean up after your own dog Never bring a dog to the park that has an illness. These are just a few precautions to remember. Check

the rules before entering the park and you and your dogwill have a great time The Park is open daylight to darkeveryday.

Deb Borns prepares to cut the ribbon at the Dedication of the Celina Rotary Club Dog Park. Helping to hold the ribbonis Darlene Lynskey and John Hunter, assistant chief of the Ohio’s Division of Parks and Recreation. On left is CraigMorton, Regional Manager of Grand Lake St. Marys. The Secret Lives of Fortunate Wives

By: Sarah StrohmeyerReviewed by: Georgia Rindler Marti Denton has the good life. The

wife of a man making a seven-figure salary, mother of two perfect daughters and friend to the most envied women in the state: she has it all. She is one of the fortunate ones living in Hunting Hills, a

gated community outside of Cleveland, Ohio. The women in her social circle redecorate regularly, entertain constantly, and visit their hair stylists, therapists, dermatologists, manicurists, life coaches, personal trainers, and plastic surgeons more often than they eat. They play tennis, attend fund raising events, and take lavish vacations. Their children are headed to Ivy League colleges after they finish their

private school educations on the best campuses in northeast Ohio. They also have a regular book club, although no one ever seems to have time to read the book. They are all just so busy. Keeping track of the cook, housekeeper and the rest of the staff is a fulltime job in itself. And that’s not to mention the shopping. Hunting Hills wives know that the more they buy, the more their hard-working husbands value them. Whether he is an investment banker, CEO of an outdoor outfitters conglomerate, stockbroker, or into real estate, he is an important man. Most of the couples have lived here all of their lives; growing up together and attending the same high schools. They are living the American Dream. In such a perfect world, what sort of secrets could they possibly be keeping? Traffic tickets, divorce, kids in trouble, drunken driving, drugs, extramarital affair; some of these things are expected to happen. They are just part of life and can all be handled easily with a call to Roy Phelps. He’s on retainer and can clear up any legal mess. But when a true problem does arise…. to whom do they turn? Can they really trust the outsider who married into the group? And can she trust them?

This is all part of the humorous drama that is The Secret Lives of Fortunate Wives. Of course the book is fiction, and there is no Hunting Hills, Ohio per se. But in her travels, the author has found similar upscale suburbs from coast to coast. She based her story on those she heard from real people. I enjoyed this book because it is a light, fun read. The characters have everything they could possibly need, yet still grasp for more. They seem to thrive on minor scandals and gossip. From the ten rules that Hunting Hills wives live by to the reasons and ways those rules are bent and broken, The Secret Lives of Fortunate Wives is an entertaining book. It’s nothing too worrisome or intense, just an amusing story about life in the rich and fast lane. you can find The Secret Lives of Fortunate Wives in the fiction section: FIC STR.

Sunday, June 24, 2012, 1:00 – 4:00, the Mercer County Indian Relic Collectors will be hosting the 32nd Annual Prehistoric Artifacts Exhibit at the Mercer County Historical Museum, the Riley Home, at 130 East Market, a block east of the Courthouse at Celina. The Exhibit is free and the public is welcome.

The theme of this year’s exhibit is, “Protect our Native American Heritage in Western Ohio.” The Mission of the Historical Society is to preserve local history and to educate the public about that history.

The fact that this is the 32nd Annual Exhibit is evidence that this has been one of the most successful exhibits ever hosted by the Mercer County Historical Society at the County Museum. One reason for this success is the dedication of the Artifact Collectors to bringing various parts of their collections to show the public. The second reason for this success is the popularity of the exhibits with the public.

Ray Eblen coordinated the first exhibit by the Mercer County Historical Society, on March 18, 1973, at the old museum site at the corner of Main and Fayette Streets, the first year I was President of the Historical Society. After the Mercer County Commissioners purchased The Riley Home for the Mercer County Historical Society in 1975, the Society hosted the first Open House April 25, 1976. Thirty one years ago, the Mercer County Indian

Relic Collectors began hosting the Prehistoric Artifacts Exhibit. These Collectors hunt for artifacts which include slate types, flint types and stone tools. (The word “artifacts” means an object made by human work.)

The slate artifacts may include utilitarian pieces, e.g. tools, ornaments, or ceremonial pieces, of various shapes. Robert Converse’s book, “Ohio Slate Types,” includes examples of prismoidal or ellipsoidal bar weights, and double or knobbed crescent pieces, bannerstones (ball, chlorite tubular, pick, Chlorite pick, winged, and panel). Birdstone examples include bust-type, pop-eyed, and bar-type. Slate Gorgets include rectangular two-hole, semi-keeled, spineback, humped, expanded center, boat-shaped, constricted center, bi-concave, quadriconcave, expanded

center, coffin shaped Glacial Kame and ovate Glacial Kame, elliptical, indented, sandal sole shell, stone sandal sole, and reel-shaped gorgets. Equally so, there are a variety of shapes of slate pendants. Another slate tool is the unusual atlatl weight form known as the Geniculate. This book contains fine illustrations of a variety of slate artifacts with descriptions.

The flint artifacts often are what we commonly call “arrow heads.” The Flint Ridge artifacts have the colors of a rainbow and are valued by collectors. The first time I had a rough piece of flint and thought

I would see if I could create an arrowhead, I cut my finger! Flint is sharp! you will have to look at Robert Converse’s book “Ohio Flint Types,” to identify various flint artifacts as well as document their age.

Stone tools are often found in Mercer County. Robert Converse’s book, “Ohio Stone Tools,” illustrates various stone axes, celts, pestles and stone bowls. These three books are the best handbooks available.

We invite the public to bring the artifacts they have at home and ask the Collectors to identify the artifacts. We will have Robert Converse’s books available to help identify artifacts. Ohio Archaeological Magazines are another source of information. These slate, flint, and stone artifacts are not only tools, but also works of art, created by prehistoric man thousands of years ago and were used in Mercer County as well as other counties here in Western Ohio, and across the continent of North America.

[The Mercer County Historical Society President Joyce Alig, may be contacted at 3054 Burk-St. Henry Road, Saint Henry, OH 45883, or [email protected] or 419-678-2614.]

Larry M. Young and his grandson Casey have been showing their Collections of Prehistoric Artifacts at the Mercer County Historical Museum for years.

Dan Muhlenkamp and Roger Rindler spoke to the Coldwater Kiwanis at their regular meeting on June 5, 2012. Dan and Roger spoke about the 100th Anniversary of Preferred Insurance Agency. Roger described the agency that began as the Boeke Insurance Agency in Coldwater in 1912. The Gebele Insurance Agency began in Celina in 1914. Over the years there were a number of changes in ownership and different partnerships were formed in each of those agencies. In 1993 John Boeke, Roger Rindler and Dan Muhlenkamp established

the business as Preferred Insurance Agency. Dan described what he called a “new way to conduct business” in which the agency conducts its business in

a professional manner, but tries to have fun, too. One of the ways they try to give back to the community is through an activity called “flamingo flocking.” Brightly colored plastic flamingos are placed in front of homes or businesses and owners make a donation to one of seven charities to have them removed. Dan also demonstrated how the business is using its website and Facebook to interact with the community.

Kiwanis newsThe May 10 meeting of the Gal-

axy Leaders 4-H club was called to order by President Brianna Wenning. Fourteen members answered roll call by saying if they were ready for school to be out. Five advisors and eight guests were also present.

Lauren Wenning and Amber Free-man led the Pledge of Allegiance and Hannah and Madison Fox led the 4-H Pledge.

The secretary and treasurers re-ports were read and approved. Sa-mantha Fritz made the motion to ac-cept and Brianna Wenning seconded it. Motion passed.

Under old business, members were thanked for picking up their miles of trash. Extra bags, gloves and vest were collected. Advisor Carol Westgerdes reminded mem-bers that if they need any help with their projects to call and advisor for

help. 4-H camp registration is still being accepted.

New business, May birthday candy bars went to Avery Kremer, Rachel Schmackers and Wyatt Fritz. The Mercer County Senior Fair Board is sponsoring chicken din-ners on June 10th at the Fairgrounds. Those interested in purchasing tick-ets need to get them from the Senior Fair Board office. This is to ben-efit the Jr. Fair. The project judging schedules were handed out. County group registration forms, skillathon times, modeling papers, demonstra-tion contest forms and various Queen Contest forms were also distributed to the members. The forms were all explained to the Mothers in atten-dance.

In observance of Mothers Night were had two guest speakers for the evening. Erin Niekamp a chiroprac-

tor from Niekamp Chiropractic Cen-ter and Cindy Fifer a Massage Thera-pists from The Special Touch. Erin talked about how to align the bones in your body. She also talked about stretching and exercises before do-ing strenuous activities. She showed everyone how she works on the back to take out the kinks. Cindy talked about how massages can also help relieve the body of pain. They work together in treating their patients. Members were told that these prac-tices can help with ear infections and many sports injuries. Cindy showed everyone how to give hand massag-es. Thank you to Erin and Cindy for coming and talking to us.

Amanda Melhouse gave a health report on staying healthy during cold and flu season, a safety report on

babysitting safety, and a demonstra-tion on how to draw a picture using your name.

The meeting was adjourned by Hannah Fox and seconded by Sarah Brunswick. The Fox family and Car-ol Westgerdes served refreshments.

The Cloverbud activity was mak-ing butterflies. For recreation the members played the Bee game.

The next meeting is on July 12, 2012 at 7PM at the Coldwater Li-brary meeting room. THERE IS NO JUNE MEETING. Please bring finished projects and books to the meeting to be looked over. We will answer any questions you may have that night. Hannah Fox and Wyatt Fritz will have reports and Amanda Melhouse will have refreshments.

Remember Dad

Father’s Day is right around the corner and that means many children, spouses and other family members will be scrambling to locate the per-fect gifts for the men in their lives.

Put away those coupons for neck-ties and remote control caddies. There’s a good chance Dad wants something a little less cliche and more in tune with his interests. If you think carefully about gift ideas, there’s bound to be something that will be a perfect fit.

SportsIf Dad follows a particular team

or sport, gifts inspired by his love of a favorite team are a surefire bet for success. Team jersies, game memo-rabilia, tickets to the next at-home game, or an expanded satellite dish or cable TV sports programming pack-age are some gift ideas that will co-ordinate with a sports theme. Some dads also may be content to simply hit the links or spend a few hours at the batting cages.

Personalized GiftsPersonalized gifts can show that

special man in your life that you care about him in a special way. Instead of a run-of-the-mill item pulled off a store shelf, a personalized gift can feature a name, date or sentiment right on the gift itself. Think about giving Dad a personalized plaque that designates his work area in the garage or a pocket lighter or photo frame en-graved with a special message or his name. An embroidered bath robe, or a golf bag embroidered with his ini-tials may also be a special treat.

Fit for FoodiesAs the adage goes, “The way to

a man’s heart is through his stom-ach.” Take advantage of these words of wisdom by gifting your Dad with food or culinary-themed items. Dad may be an amateur chef and will en-joy a cookbook by his favorite Food Network(TM) personality. Or he may have a restaurant he insists on going to all the time, so guarantee-ing a gift card to said restaurant will be a hit. If Dad appreciates not only the taste, but also the culture of food, plan a tour of food shops in the area or go on a wine- and cheese-tasting

adventure.

Gear HeadsSome dads get revved up about

automotive gifts, especially if they spend the weekends pampering their prized cars or trucks. If he tends to have a wrench in hand and head under the hood, treat your father to some new supplies for his automo-tive pursuits. Quality car waxes and upholstery cleaners are always in de-mand. Or give him a gift certificate to his favorite hand-wash, auto-detail-ing center. Gas station gift cards or a new ratchet set are other good auto gift ideas.

TechiesSome dads get excited about the

latest tablets or smartphones. They may keep abreast of virus-detection software or think the technologi-cal gadgets sold in those speciality magazines and mall stores are must-haves. Chances are if you spend enough time with Dad you know just what he likes to dabble in, and you can get him an electronic device he’ll find invaluable.

Great gift ideas for Dad

Observations ... by John BrunsJUST WHAT YOU WANT

They played a lot of games in the NBA even in this strike shortened season, but it is about now I start to pay any attention. Actually one can skip the first half of most pro games as things do not get serious until then. I am probably one of the few Ohioans who was glad to see LeBron James excel against Boston and move to the finals. The guy has been abused by Buckeyes for years for his disastrous television show and departure from Cleveland. I think he really is an okay guy, and a great athlete who has handled his abuse well.

Now to politics. We have had our share of long winters in Ohio, the kind where we had little choice but to hunker down and wait for the wind, snow, and sub-zero weather conditions to ultimately dissipate before we could stick our heads outside. I am guessing those days may not be remembered as bad after what we Ohioans will face in the next five months. If the economy and national deficit is as bad as I am told, where are all these millions and millions of dollars coming from to convince, hoodwink, confuse, confirm, or change our minds about the November vote. The only possible escape from these people who are so concerned in helping us make the proper decision, might be to disconnect your television and phone, cancel your mail service, don’t go to work, church, or other large gatherings of people, and move into a tent into the woods someplace. you still may have someone slap your tent flap before the election to enlighten you on political facts.

We already have and definitely will continue to hear and read all variety of reasons to vote for the correct candidate and I feel free to offer a few ideas of my own.

The anticipated close election may well turn on the condition of our corn and beans, the price at the gas pump, and any local layoffs. The crops are in the ground, fertilized, and weed free. The weather is always the key factor, and things have been somewhat abnormal in that area both locally and nationally. We have had winterless winters, very early then cold springs, and floods and record droughts nationally. The conservatives basically see climate change as a liberal pipe dream. If

the weather continues to act strangely, count points for the liberals, who have pushed for environmental and energy controls. When gas was nearing four dollars at the pumps, we saw adds busting the President’s energy policies. The price of gas has dropped so have the critical television ads, but jury is still out on this one. Would we really know and actually care if the national employment rate is 8.1 or 8.2 if it were not told to us by some media type? The economy is actually a local concern. It’s what is happening to myself, my kids, and my neighbors, not people in New Jersey or California. Things are at least okay with the local job scene, so another wait and see.

Greenville – On June 23rd at 6:30pm the Lucas Oil Pro Pulling League is proud to sanction the 5th Annual Ohio State Championship Pull presented by Bayer Crop Science at the Great Darke County Fairgrounds in Greenville, Ohio.

The Barga Family has been involved in tractor pulling for nearly 50 years and is very excited for another great tractor & truck pull at their new location the Great Darke

County Fairgrounds. The benefit pull will continue its partnership with Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation of Greater Dayton (JDRF) by donating a portion of the proceeds to JDRF. The Barga Family has three children in one family who are diagnosed with juvenile diabetes.

“We truly believe this event is good for Darke County and most importantly JDRF,” said Ron Barga. “Thus far we have donated

over $40,000 to Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, which we couldn’t have done without the support of everyone involved.”

Currently slated for the fifth annual event are five PPL classes on two pulling tracks, including the E3 Super Modified tractors, MAC Trailer Unlimited Super Stocks, Optima Batteries 2WD Trucks, Premier Crop Insurance Pro Stocks and the Air Dog Hot Rod Semis. For

a third year in a row they will have a Kiddie Tractor Pull starting at 4pm for ages 4-10 with signups in front of the grandstands. Visit the Ohio State Championship Pull website at www.ohiostatepull.com for more info or contact 937-337-0371.

Tickets are $15 per adult for general admission in the grandstands, $20 per adult for VIP pit passes and all children 12 and under are free. Also, there are FREE $5.00 off coupons available at local participating Dollar General stores.

Gates open at 3:30pm to the grandstand and pits, with the pull starting at 6:30pm. We encourage everyone to take the opportunity to see these awesome machines up close and talk to the drivers.

The Barga Family greatly appreciates the large response from the local businesses that chose to help support this pull in 2012. A big thanks to all the sponsors: Bayer Crop Science, Premier Crop Insurance, Greenville National

Ohio State Championship Pull to be held at Great Darke County Fairgrounds

Pictured are Tri-Star Horticulture students Melissa Kahlig and Elinda Larwence, who competed in the State FFA Science Fair held during the State FFA Convention. Their project consisted of a study of macro-nutrient uptake in four types of wetland plants. The plants were obtained from Grand Lake in cooperation with the Mercer County Soil and Water Conservation Service. The students constructed a simulated wetland in the Tri-Star Greenhouse and kept the plants for four months during the winter. During that time period they performed various water and plant tissue tests to determine the nutrient levels in the plants. Their main focus was on nitrate and phosphorous levels in the plant. Their goal was to determine which

wetland plant was best at removing nitrates and phosphorous from the water. During the science fair the students were required to explain their project to a panel of judges and construct a display explaining the process and results of the project. The students earned a Gold Rating for their project efforts and were very pleased with the results their achieved.
