Editor’s Introduction

Welcome to the second issue of KLIK for 2015/16. Club President Craig Stirton leads off this issue with some important information on the Club Champion Trophy, and our digital technology systems. Next up, we are very excited to feature a profile of Toronto’s Harry Enchin who has done pioneering work in rephotography of city streetscapes; in this issue he shares with MCC members some thoughts and perspectives on his work. Club Historian Audrey Cherevaty has found in the archives another humorous KLIK excerpt for our readers, this time from a 2003 issue. Audrey asks that anyone wishing to contribute club memorabilia to the archives should contact her directly. This

year in KLIK we want to explore some of the lesser-known camera equipment technologies; to begin we interviewed Pradipta Datta who explains why he uses Pentax cameras and lenses, and describes what’s in his bag. Stay tuned in future issues for a review of mirrorless cameras with interchangeable lenses. The Ron Manning Trophy for Beginner Digital last year was won by Lori Metcalfe. Herein she describes her early interest in photography, more recent influences and interests, and the anticipated future direction of her work. To help us all become better acquainted with each other, readers will find bios of the MCC Executive in the next two issues. And finally, as with prior years, each issue will be timed to follow competition night; in this issue you will find the results of the second competition. Congratulations to all Ribbon Winners and participants; keep your eye on the Leaderboard! Thanks to all of our contributors in this issue. We look forward to hearing from you and getting your feedback. Editor Jim Evans

Message from MCC President Craig Stirton

Robbie Robinson - The Club Champion Trophy Last year I had a conversation with Robbie Robinson regarding the Club Champion Trophy named after him. The trophy is listed under the Digital Trophy list as it should be with the current criteria “Highest accumulated total for the best 2 images in Digital Pictorial, Digital Nature, Digital Creative”. The title of the trophy is Club Champion; however, the club also offers competitions in Print and Inter-club competitions under the GTCCC. Therefore, in consultation with Robbie, we would propose that the criteria for winning the Club Champion Trophy be rewritten for 2016/17 to more accurately reflect that the winner of the trophy has indeed exhibited outstanding skill in all areas of the Mississauga Camera Club competitions. Digital Technology Systems As your President this year, and member of the Executive for the last two years, it has become increasingly obvious that the club’s needs and dependency on digital technology is outstripping the availability and skills of our volunteer base. Most of the systems that the club uses to conduct the various functions within communications and competitions have been developed in-house. These systems have been adapted as the needs changed. Most of the original authors of the systems are either no longer with the club, or are no longer willing to continue to make further changes. This has left the current volunteers wrestling with system that are frustrating to use efficiently and more importantly unable to be flexible enough to address the demands that are being placed on the club systems. At the January Board of Directors meeting reports were received outlining the difficulties that are facing both Communications and Competitions areas. Therefore we are undertaking a course of action to assess our procedures, identify problems, and develop and implement a plan to overcome these issues and relieve the stress on our volunteer base. I am totally confident that all members are in full support of changes to ensure that, when a member volunteers to help the club, it turns out to be a positive experience and not one of frustration and anxiety wherein the volunteer can’t wait to unload the job. I will keep you updated on our progress.

Digital c-print, 54"x35", limited edition of 10 From the TorontoTIME series by Harry Enchin

The Rephotography of Toronto’s Harry Enchin

Wikipedia Definition: Rephotography is the act of repeat photography of the same site, with a time lag between the two images; a "then and now" view of a particular area. Some are casual, usually taken from the same view point but without regard to season, lens coverage or framing. Some are very precise and involve a careful study of the original image.

Editor: The following article was based on a telephone interview with Harry that was conducted in early January.

Harry Enchin describes his background in photography as being typical to that

of most photographers. He had a camera as a teenager and enjoyed taking photos of vacations and family events, recording those things that were important to him in those years. About ten years ago he developed an urge to do something different ... to take on a project that would be unique and push him into new and, as yet, unexplored territory. He had always been interested in city streetscapes, and was intrigued by the idea of combining new and old representations of Toronto and, in doing so, to evoke memory through art. About that same time he had taken his mother to visit the area of Toronto where she grew up in the Junction. They noticed that while some of the buildings were still in place in their original condition, others had been renovated or replaced by newer structures. This caused Harry to think about streetscapes generally and

how things had changed in other neighbourhoods of Toronto, and downtown commercial areas. But rather than just make images of current day scenes to compare with those of the past, Harry was keen to find a way to interweave the elements of both old and new images. The first challenge was to find good quality, large photographic images from the past for street locations that had changed only somewhat during the intervening 80-100 years. He’s been able to do this searching city archives and libraries. The next challenge was to find the exact spot where the photographer of yesteryear stood to make his/her photograph, for those images that had potential to apply the rephotography idea that Harry had in mind. Today he uses his iPhone containing the old image as reference when setting up to shoot, ensuring that he’s properly located.

In regard to this latter point, Harry tells a humorous anecdote about recently receiving a bright neon safety vest as a gift, which he has subsequently used so as to be highly visible to motorists while he’s standing in the middle of the street trying to get the perfect shot from the exact location ... and how that makes the challenge of being non-intrusive and non-distractive to passing pedestrian traffic when capturing his images all the more challenging.

Harry has been told that his approach to rephotography is unique in that he takes his image at exactly the same location, from exactly the same perspective as the original photograph; and, he digitally combines and interweaves elements of a single old image and a single new image. The contrast of old and new is readily apparent – such as city road workmen without safety helmets together in the same image with a new ‘red rocket’ streetcar – and provides

social commentary on the passage of time. His images provoke discussion on the retention of heritage buildings and structures in our cityscapes versus the aesthetics of modern architecture. Harry cites three renowned rephotographers as motivational influences in his own work:

1. Mark Klett is a geographer and landscape photographer/artist. He combines colour and B&W images of

western landscapes to create a feeling of the old west combined with current day vistas.

2. Camilo José Vegara is a Chilean-born, New York-based writer and photographer known for his photographic

documentation of American slums and decaying urban environments. His images show over longer periods of

time the impact of poverty on neighbourhoods and de-urbanization.

3. Shimon Attie is an American visual artist. Much of Attie’s work explores how a wide range of contemporary

media may be used to re-imagine new relationships between space, time, place, and identity.

Harry’s work has been exhibited and sold in galleries in Toronto, New York, Miami, and Mexico City. He has exhibited in the Scotiabank Contact Photography Festival several times, and has exhibited during and won awards at both the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition and The Artist Project. He wishes to acknowledge his support with grants from the Ontario Arts Council, Toronto Arts Council and more. For a full list of his awards, grants and exhibitions, along with more samples of his work please visit his websites at www.torontomomentsintime.com and www.newyorkmomentsintime.com. More recently Harry has been expanding his locational interests to include New York City, Boston and Los Angeles streetscapes. Harry’s work is available in limited editions and he can be reached at [email protected] .

KLIK Excerpt May 2003

Sound Familiar???

An amateur photographer was invited to dinner with friends and

took along some pictures to show the hostess. She looked at the

photos and commented: "These are excellent. You must have a

very good camera." The photographer didn't make any comment,

but as he was leaving to go home he said to the hostess: "That

was a really delicious meal. You must have some very good pots."

Thanks to Roy Williams

Interview with MCC Pentaxian

Pradipta Datta

Editor: Why did you choose Pentax? Pradipta: I bought my first SLR – the ME Super, in 1980. It may have been cheaper than other brands like Olympus, Minolta, Yashica, Canon etc. But, most importantly it got rave reviews in British photo magazines when it was released and its small size felt ideal for my hands. Besides, the Beatles loved the brand (among other celebrities)!

I went digital in 2005 and continued with the brand because it allowed me to use my legacy lenses as the Shake Reduction is built in the body which enables the feature in all the lenses. This keeps the lenses light and small. I have bought 4 more bodies since then and given two of them to my daughter.

Editor: What is on your equipment list? Pradipta: The bodies are a K-3 and its predecessor a K-5. Both have APS-C sensors. The K-3 was released in October 2013 as the flagship model for its DSLR line. Compared to the previous model (K-5), it has a 24MP sensor (vs. 16MP for the K-5), a faster frame rate of 8.3 FPS, 27 AF points (up from 11), more AF modes, and a 3.2-inch monitor (up from 3 inch). This body has a few interesting, innovative features:

1. The sensor has no anti-alias filter but the effect of an AA filter can be simulated through micro-movements of the sensor using the shake reduction (SR) mechanism. This means that the effect of an AA filter can basically be turned on and off. For subjects with very fine detail in repeating patterns where one runs the risk of false color patterns (moiré) the filter should be turned on. For landscape photography the filter could be turned off and the images would benefit from increased resolution.

2. The camera supports the FLU Card, which is an SD card with built in Wi-Fi. With this card in the camera one can control the camera remotely from a PC, tablet or smart phone. Remote live view is also provided.

3. It has two SD card slots that can be employed to record images simultaneously or alternately in RAW and/or JPG format.

I have several Pentax branded lenses, primes as well as zooms. My current favourites are a 100 prime for macro and 20-40 zoom for landscape and street. Editor: What do like about the product line? Pradipta: I like their simplistic design, ergonomics, handling and innovative features. For instance, the ability to shift the sensor allows several features like: in body SR, anti-alias simulation, astro tracking and composition adjustment. Independent reviews compare the camera very favourably with other brands and even recommend it for first time

buyers of SLR systems. Pentax digital cameras and newer lenses are weather sealed. They use a dust- and moisture-resistant structure that shuts out dust particles and water drops. Watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eo61t5fH6Qw .

Editor: What improvements would you like to see Pentax make to their product offering? Pradipta: In the K3, the AF feature and slow flash sync (1/160) have room for improvement. The video quality and focusing are also not the best. The SD based Wi-Fi also has some shortcomings. Editor: What’s new at Pentax or in its product pipeline? Pradipta: A long awaited FF body is being launched in spring 2016. Several interesting features are rumored, including support for all K-mount lenses (backward compatibility), a crop mode with three user-selectable settings (automatic, APS-C, and full frame), built-in Wi-Fi and GPS, an articulating LCD screen etc. Three new lenses are on the roadmap: a full-frame standard zoom (roughly 28-105mm), a full-frame wide zoom (roughly 14-28mm, likely F2.8), and an APS-C wide zoom (roughly 10-30mm). Editor: What equipment additions / upgrades are you considering next? Pradipta: I am happy with my stable of lenses and will consider some primes if the ‘price is right’. B&H does offer great deals from time to time but these are not always available in Canada. Besides, the current value of the Can$ makes everything that much more expensive. I have achieved some good results in close up / macro images and will continue to focus in that area for the time being.

st in Beginner Digital (Ron Manning Trophy)

Editor: We asked Lori to tell us about her early interest in photography and how it has evolved, and to share a couple of her favourite competition images from last year.

Let me begin by saying that the picture of me with the snow is just faux snow. I do love to snowshoe and am looking forward to our first heavy snowfall. I was born and raised in London, Ontario. My older brother is a photographer and when he lived at home he had a dark room in the basement. I was really young at the time so his dark room did not interest me. The smell of the chemicals was enough to keep me out! I have always loved pictures and am drawn to black and white portraits especially done in low key. I moved to Oakville in 1995. Since that time there have been a lot of changes in my life that have helped me to grow as a person. At a later age I went back to school to become a Registered Massage Therapist. This was definitely a shock to the system but I have found since changing careers that my structured world as I once knew it changed for the better. I never thought I was a creative person but the change in careers helped me to realize who I am. It has only been in recent years that I purchased my first Nikon DSLR. Photography has given me another outlet where my creative side can grow but photography has also helped me to deal with the stresses of daily life. Everyone has something that gives them peace whether it is exercise, travelling, reading or just sitting watching a good movie. For me my peace is my photography. I am always growing as a photographer. Photography is a hobby that you can always continue to learn from ... so many things to photograph so little time.

I recently took a history and theory of photography course and it was at this time I realized what I truly love to photograph. I am drawn to Edward Henry Weston’s style of photography. From his still life to his photographs of nudes he seems to find the beauty in things others overlook. His philosophy is very similar to mine. “Anything that excites me for any reason, I will photograph; not searching for unusual subject matter, but making the commonplace unusual”. I am unique and want my images to reflect my uniqueness and to be different. I am an emotional person and I want my images to have an emotional component to them. My photography is all or nothing to me. When I set out to do something my whole heart and soul goes into it. I am an animal lover and a huge advocate for animal rescue. I have three rescue dogs (Gordie, Jenna and Calvin) and two rescue guinea pigs (Petunia and Picasso). Anyone that knows me well knows that this is another passion of mine. I did a calendar of my guinea pigs to raise

money for a guinea pig rescue group. The calendar was called “Calendar Girls 2013”. I love to photograph animals, whether it is my own animals or wildlife captured while on vacation I am drawn to the living beauty of nature. One of my bucket list items is to go to Rwanda to photograph the Mountain Gorillas.

In May of this year I was featured in a magazine from Newfoundland called Downhome. In this magazine was a write up about me with several of my images taken while on vacation in Newfoundland. I was thrilled to share this with my Dad just before he died the beginning of May. With great sorrow comes great happiness. The timing of the Ronald Manning Cup had even more meaning for me as Ronald reminds me so much of my Dad. I believe everything happens for a reason. This is my third year as a member of the Mississauga Camera Club. When I was looking for a camera club to join I contacted several clubs in my area and MCC was the only club that got back to me, once again confirming that everything does happen for a reason. I’m proud to say that I am a member of such a great club. I am currently working on a series of images in hopes of one day being featured in a local gallery. Dreams do come true ... you just have to Believe.

MCC Executive Bios

Craig Stirton, President I became aware of photography while in high school. I started with a simple box camera, I even had a simple dark room set up for black and white processing and print making. I never really mastered either of those processes. But I did learn that capturing the image is only part of the creative process. When I started my teaching career, I found that using visual aids and having my students use image-making a valuable learning tool. So throughout my career photography was an important part of my life both professional and personal. When my kids were involved in competitive sports, I thoroughly enjoyed capturing their activities on film. Over the years, I had developed sufficient skill that when my daughter competed at national championships I was asked, on several occasions, to be the official photographer at the competitions. Probably this is where I started to love portraiture.

After my retirement from teaching in 2010 I became associated with Creative Image Studios as event coordinator at their studio photo shoot events. Then a few years later I went with one of the partners to assist him at Snap ‘n Dazzle Creative Photography Events as Director of Operations. Both of these opportunities allowed me to learn about Studio photography and to appreciate the challenges of photographing models. After being on the waiting list for two years, I finally was able to join the Mississauga Camera Club in September 2012. Like many other beginners at the Club, I found entering competitions very intimidating. However, after thoroughly reading the Competition Handbooks and asking the President some questions, I have competed in all but the very first competition. Being a member of MCC has helped me to further develop my photography skills and knowledge through the guest speakers, workshops, outings but most significantly through my involvement on the print and digital teams. Although there have been challenges while serving on the executive the past two years, it has been most enjoyable being a member of this Club

David Clow, Director Competitions David has been an amateur photographer for the last 40 years. Photography interests range from wildlife and other nature topics, to sports/action, to portrait/human form photography, as well as architectural and street photography. He sells his work when requested but hasn’t yet quit his day job. David is a private practice general radiologist, working throughout the GTA. Mostly self-taught, he has attended workshops with Garry Black (PEI), and Richard Martin (Gros Morne). He has had solo exhibits on The People of Havana (National Press Club, Ottawa), another on his Journey to Antarctica (RA Centre, Ottawa), as well as a juried joint exhibit on Prince Edward Island (Centre Point Theatre Gallery, Nepean Ontario). He currently is showing some of his work in the Mississauga Public Library with other members of the Mississauga Camera Club. David is a CAPA recognized judge for photography competitions. He has won several awards in the Canadian Geographic Photo Contest over the last 20 years, as well as an award in the first annual CAPA AV show competition. His work has been published in Canadian Camera (CAPA), as well as in Canadian Geographic (Best of Canadian Wildlife 2012). He currently displays some his nature photography through his website www.lightrenderings.com. He has personally lead workshops in Algonquin Park, with plans to start annual workshops in Tofino, B.C., in the near future.

Kathy Foster, Director Member Services I have been with the club since 2013. This year I am in the executive in the role of membership director. I have always enjoyed photography however got my DSLR in 2012. I experiment with any kind of photography. It depends where the opportunities arise! I do enjoy macro photography though. I am looking forward to more interesting photography opportunities within the club.

Editor: Bios of other Executive members will appear in the next issue
