The latest addition to the Northwest Campus is the Larry K. Lewis Education Center. The new 90,000 sq. ft. Academic Building houses 31 classrooms, computer labs, a 133 seat lecture hall, and a Media Center. The new building is slated to be the first LEED Platinum building in Michigan when certified. It uses geothermal heating/cooling, a “Gray” water system, solar panels for hot water and electricity and has a “Green” roof. The building houses the Police Authority Administration on the first floor, Campus Administrative offices, including Office of the President, on the second floor and Faculty offices on the third floor.

FEATURED FAMOUS

SCIENTIST

Rachel Carson

1907-1964

Rachel Carson was a marine

biologist, environmentalist and

writer who alerted the world to

the environmental impact of

fertilizers and pesticides.

"If a child is to keep alive his inborn

sense of wonder without any such gift

from the fairies, he needs the

companionship of at least one adult who

can share it, rediscovering with him the

joy, excitement and mystery of the world

we live in."

"Rachel Louise Carson." 2013. The Biography

Channel website. Oct 10 2013, http://

www.biography.com/people/rachel-carson-9239741.

At the spring conference I gave a brief presentation about the science education website that I have developed over the past few years, Science Prof Online (www.scienceprofonline.com). The site offers free course materials for cell biology, microbiology (8 week and 16 week) and, soon, anat & phys. These free materials include newly updated PowerPoint lectures that now feature more critical thinking questions and animated lessons, as well as a science video and image library, homework assignments, test questions, review questions, lab exercises, "class notes" articles; all resources that are used in my cell and microbiology classes.

The Instructor's Corner (www.scienceprofonline.com/instructors-corner/instructors-corner-main.html) area of the site has most of these materials easily accessible on one page. The site is a great resource for new instructors looking for fully-developed, but editable materials, as well as established instructors look new materials.

Fall 2013 MCCB News

This book is a divided into three sections: The exploration of the botanical and historical

aspects of the various plants humans use to make alcoholic drinks, from Agave to

Wheat; a compilation of the various other plant products used to flavor alcohols (from

herbs like ginger and licorice; through flowers like elderflower and hops; to trees like

birch and juniper); and lastly to the plants we use to garnish our drinks (lemon rind,

cherries, berries, flowers, etc.). There are many interesting stories. Did you know that

George Washington was a grower of rye and distilled Rye Whiskey in one of the new

nation’s largest distilleries, producing over ten thousand gallons of alcohol per year?

And that the demand for sugar from sugarcane was the biggest impetus toward

establishing the slave trade? Some British Abolitionists refused to take sugar in their tea

in protest. There is lots of botanical interest (plant family, when it arose in Earth’s

history, how it reproduces) for those of you, like me, who are more interested in the

science than the actual drinks. She also includes

helpful asides, like a field guide to Fortified Wines, for

example, or a discussion about the World’s Most-

Imbibed plant (grapes? apples? surprise … it may be

sorghum!).

Throughout the book there is plenty of science to

satisfy the botany geek in me, with a liberal sprinkling

of humor and history. And if you also enjoy imbibing,

there are over 50 recipes for cocktails, garnishes, syrups

and infusions. Since the book is written in short

sections (each plant is given about 2-10 pages), it is

perfect for those half hour periods when you don’t have

students coming to your office, or when you need a

break from grading papers.

MCCB (Michigan Community College Biologists) provides a

state-wide forum for sharing instructional techniques and up-

to-date information for teaching college-level biology. The

organization fosters communication, friendship, and unity

among the biologists of the twenty-nine community colleges

in the State of Michigan. Our logo reflects the location of

those 29 colleges. Two state-wide conferences are held

annually.

Founded in the early 1980's, MCCB began as an offshoot of

COSIP (the College Science Improvement Program). Two

COSIP groups were originally created in Michigan: a southern

group of colleges (associated with the University of Michigan/

Dearborn and directed by Dr. Hertzler) and a northern group

of colleges (associated with Central Michigan University and

directed by Dr. Carl Scheel). The initial meeting to form a

statewide organization of community colleges took place at

Delta College in 1981. The first slate of officers was elected at

that time, with Eldon Enger as President and Janet Dettloff as

Vice-President.

- To promote an interest in biology.

- To improve the teaching of biology by

providing opportunities to share and

discuss instructional techniques and

teaching methods.

- To provide opportunities for updates on

current topics and trends in biology.

- To facilitate the exchange of ideas and foster communication,

friendship and unity among the community college biologists in

Michigan.
