Better quality care and experiences in child mental health: Advancing knowledge and improving norms, services and practices
through participatory research
Marjorie Montreuil, PhDAssistant professor, Ingram School of Nursing, McGill University
Abstract: According to the Mental Health Commission of Canada, it is estimated that up to 20% of children (<18 years old) in the country have a mental health disorder, and these disorders represent the 2nd highest health care expenditure for this age group. Numerous ethical concerns have been identified in relation to child mental health care, including issues related to availability and access to mental health care services, as well as concerns about the quality and experiences of the care children and families receive. In this seminar, I will present a series of projects I am conducting to address certain ethical concerns within child mental health care and services. I will also present a participatory methodological approach I have developed and employ in my work.
Dr. Montreuil is assistant professor at McGill’s Ingram School of Nursing. She has clinical experience as a mental health nurse and clinical nurse specialist. She completed a doctoral degree in nursing at McGill University and pursued postdoctoral training in
pragmatic health ethics at the Institut de recherches cliniques de Montréal. With her research, she seeks to advance knowledge and practices in child mental health to address ethical issues of high relevance to clinical care. Her research interests include concept analysis, qualitative and participatory methodologies, and ethics in the context of mental health care and nursing practice.
