Nathan Tvedt and Winston Oughourli ride the Full Tiltat McLean Day 2013.

As it approaches its 100th year,McLean Day holds a special placein the heart of the community. The annual outdoor festival has

been a part of growing up and raising a fam-ily in McLean for many years. The event alsoholds fond memories for its organizers atthe McLean Community Center (MCC),chiefly Sam A. Roberts III, who has workedto put the festival together for 25 years andwho will be retiring early next year.

McLean Day 2014: Celebrating OurHometown will be held from 11 a.m. to 5p.m. on Saturday, May 17, at LewinsvillePark, 1659 Chain Bridge Road. The event isfree and open to the public.

McLean Day began as fundraiser forFranklin Sherman School in 1915, and wasthe first festival of its kind to be held inFairfax County. The McLean school andCivic League and the McLean Volunteer FireDepartment sponsored the event, which washeld in an open field adjacent to the school. The festival went on for several weeks andwas held before the Democratic Primary inAugust. Attractions in the early years in-cluded carnival games, a jousting tourna-ment, a baby show, dancing, musical per-formances and homemade refreshments.Over the intervening years, the sponsorshipof McLean Day passed from one commu-nity organization to the other, until 1975when the McLean Community Center be-gan to produce it.

Roberts was hired as the director of Spe-cial Events in 1989, the same year the Cen-ter collaborated with community groupsand finally moved McLean Day to its cur-rent home at Lewinsville Park.

“I was charged with continuing the tradi-tion and making the festival better,” saidRoberts. “In the early days, there were sixpeople who helped make McLean Day whatis it today: Frank Opeka, Tommy Lukas,Carol Lukas, Lila Asar, Mary Anne Hamp-ton and Trisha Hamilton. Their combinedideas and creativity helped me to enlargethe festival.”

Tommy Lukas, who served as master ofceremonies of the McLean Day stage from1989 to 2011, is featured on the cover ofMCC’s Summer 2014 Program Guide. Rob-erts’ staff, which includes Special Events Co-ordinator Peggy Moore and Special EventsAssistant Nadia Kader, works all year on theevent, which attracts as many as 15,000people. One other person also helped Rob-erts refine the festival over the years, hisdaughter Mandy. “My daughter is now 26,but she grew up at McLean Day and wasmy best critic. She helped me see what chil-
