bows!" "Cutting the track!" "Back block!" These are just aw of the penalties that can send a skater to the penalty box,
sed on the Women's Flat Track Derby Association's (WFTDA)
es. You can't always knock down or pass skaters in any
ethod or direction you choose. Darn!
ere have been several WFTDA rules updates for 2013 which
l make it more exciting to watch and play. Here are the top
ree:
Blockers and Jammers will now start a jam on the same
whistle. Previously, the first whistle released the blockers
and the second whistle released the jammers only after the
last blocker crossed the pivot line. This new rule means no
more slow starts!
Minor penalties have been eliminated. Previously, there
were all sorts of minors for blocking out of bounds, elbows,
forearms, etc. Accruing 4 minors resulted in a trip to the
penalty box. A minor was called on a skater who caused anopposing skater to stumble, but not lose relative position
giving the skater who made the contact an obvious
advantage. Now, it is just majors that impact a skater's
position.
When skating back on to the track from out of bounds,
cutting in front of just one in-play skater (as long as it wasn't
the last line of defense) was previously a minor. Now it's a
major. No more cutting that one opposing skater who's
sharking the heck out of you and hitting you out of bounds.Packs are oin to have o back to hel their teammate.
Not much has changed in how a
Jammer can score points. She stil
get a point for every opposing ska
she passes after her initial pass. S
does, however, have to land a jumwhen passing an opposing skater
to be counted now.
So far, so good? There are many r
to understand and explore in the
of roller derby, so that it can be e
more entertaining for fans and sk

r those of you who are new to derby you will learn, eventually, that you will have a love/hate
ationship with it. I am proud to say that I am one of the original members of the Mclean County
ssFits, started in 2010. Hey, that’s awesome and I have loved and will continue to love this league
e moon! I put myself into this league to help it grow, and maybe I threw myself in a little too de
tarted to see the dark side, or rather the, I am losing my family side of it all. Derby is like a druu need it so bad sometimes. When you are in charge of so many aspects of the league, you begin to
urself without realizing what you’re doing to those around you. You know the ones that have alwa
en there and care about you the most. For some people this is ok, and becomes a change in life
perience and for most this is where they decide to stop derby and concentrate on family. For me t
s not an option. I love my family and I love derby so it was about to become a balancing act. Th
ignation of being the league’s VP was the beginning. So many thoughts, “how can they do it with
?”, “what if things go crazy?”, “will I be ok with not knowing all the ins and outs and decision
king?”, “oh and the meetings, lol, can they go thru all the meetings without me????” OF COURSey can, Camp! So I did it and now I can breathe again, I love derby more and my family loves having
ound. By that I mean not on my phone ALL the time when I am sitting in the same room as them
opped going to EVERY event and now pick a few. I am good with this and it keeps me out of trou
m four and a half months pregnant now and missing my skates more than you know. Travel team
youts just ended and wooo, that was great to be a part of. In the end, obviously my name was no
e 2013 list (I knew that) but damn it was hard to see. I am always on the list and I always get
rt of the team. OY!
am still an active member and will help in any way I can in this league. I am truly happy to know
en I am no longer pregnant anymore derby will still be there for me, and I will dedicate myself to b
e best skater I can be, while balancing my family life I think I owe it to derby, too, for making m
ster and I closer. He supports me and loves me and I love him so much. I have finally found the p
all of this and that’s super cool. So now it’s more of a love relationship with derby and life.

The final structure for the tryouts process inclu
number of ballots to be completed by the Training
Committee and members of the Board, Human Resour
and the Fresh Meat Committee for our newest skaters w
were trying out for travel teams. Skaters were assessed
according to not only skating skills at basic and advanclevels, but also rules and strategy knowledge, attendan
practice, bouts, fundraisers and league events, and over
attitude at practice and bouts, toward fellow skaters,
coaches, volunteers, and fans. After all ballots were
completed and collected, Ice, Champ, and I met to ente
scores for all skaters in each section, and calculated fin
rankings according to weighted factors voted upon by
league. It was an extremely exciting moment when we
were finally able to announce the 2013 travel team ros
to the league.
It took months to plan, train for, and execute thtryout process, but in the end I think that we have
successfully developed a fair and accurate system for o
league to use in the future. As is always the case in rol
derby, this was a learning process for all involved, and
sure we will have some tweaks to the system in season
come. Although the tryout process was stressful at tim
am proud of what we accomplished with our initial run
this new method, and our travel team rosters for the 20
season look pretty darn amazing if you ask me. I think
MissFits, on both A & B Teams, are happy with the re
and ready to work hard to make this season one toremember. I would like to thank my fellow Training
Committee members for working so hard to make this
success for our league, and I’d lik e to congratulate all o
my derby sisters for working your tails off to increase
skills and up your game for the upcoming season. Now
let’s skate about it!
On December 12t
& 16t
, 2012, the McLean
unty MissFits held our first ever tryouts for A & B travel
ms for the upcoming season. It was quite a journey toure out how this new tryout system would work, and this
how it all went down.
In previous years, our A- and B-level travel teams
d been decided in various ways. The first year, a poll
s sent out to rank each and every skater in order, and the
p 14 were included in our Allstar roster. The second
ar, skaters were nominated and voted on by the league to
captains for the Allstar team and those three skaters
ose their team. The B Team was then comprised of the
aters not included in the A Team draft, and they then
minated and voted on their team captains. Each of thesestems had obvious flaws, so this past year my co-head of
e Training Committee, Ms. Ice Hurt, had the brilliant idea
create a new, fair, comprehensive system to rank skaters
cording to a variety of important factors that would
ntribute to which team they were placed on. This system
came known as our travel team tryouts.
Throughout the process of working out this new
out method, communication was essential. Our league
ach at the time, Ms. Lightweight Champ, met with me
d Ice to discuss initial plans regarding factors to
termine ranking for skaters, including skills testing and
her assessments such as attitude, attendance, and league
presentation. Champ also began working on an Excel
ogram to run skaters’ scores through at the conclusion of
outs. The Training Committee then held multiple
eetings to discuss ideas regarding basic and advanced
lls testing, as well as details about additional
essments that should be included in the tryout process.
ter we had comprised our ideas, Ice created an initial
ite-up about tryouts to send to the league’s Board of
rectors. There were many suggestions, questions, and
ustments to follow, but in the end we came up with a
orough and fair tryout system.

tured Skater Interview, continued from page 2…What is your best derby moment?
erall? Putting together a bout in 2 weeks that raised over $27,000 for IL Cancer Care. Seeing the giant number on
ck before we presented it was absolutely amazing and made me feel like we were actually doing something huge,
eveloping the sport in Peoria and central IL and supporting the community. For the Missfits? I helped coach them
r first bout ever against the Decatur league and they won! It was a tough battle and it was my first time really ev
ching derby, but they trusted me and they worked their butts off for the victory. They got the memo that it was r
by and not a tea party =)
a new skater for the MissFits, what are some of your goals for the 2013 season?
2013 I want to improve my endurance, become a better jammer (which I hope to be able to do with the B's), get
witching between offense and defense, improve my footwork / agility / ability to turn both directions and other b
anced skills. I want to build comraderie with a team and keep loving the game. 2013 will be a great season - I'm r
w long do you think you will play roller derby?
ahaha - well, I survived one broken ankle and I always said I'd play until my body gave out. We'll see about that
ugh. I can tell I'm not getting any younger and my knees can't take too many more falls, but I'm not ready to hang
skates. Even if I can't play, I want to stay involved. Derby latches onto your soul - it's the sport, the speed, the hit
nets, the floor burn, the sweat and tears that go into it that keep you involved. You want to see it not only live, b
