Welded Grating Stocked as

GRATE COAT®Powder Coated

McNICHOLS durable welded grating has GRATE COAT®

Powder Coating as the superior surface standard!

WE CAN DO FASTCUT TO SIZE!

MATERIAL: Plain or HD Galvanized, Painted Steel, AluminumStainless Steel - Mill Finish

CONSTRUCTION: McNICHOLS®

Press-Locked Steel Grating cross bars arepressed into the bearing bars flush top undertremendous pressure laterally displacing1/16" of cross bar material into the “dovetail”slot, assuring firm, rigid connections. Deepcross bars are used for lateral support. Themain bars are not cut, punched or otherwisedeformed below the neutral axis and there-fore can resist up to the yield stress for thefull cross-section of the bars.

EXPLANATORY NOTES FOR TABLES HWC/HWD/HWESymbols and weights shown for gratings having cross bars

spaced at 4" centers. For gratings having cross bars at 2" centers addsuffix -2 to item number. Increase tabulated weight to 1.1# for the 1/4"HW bearing bar sizes and 2# for the 3/8" HW bearing bar sizes.

Supplementary cross bars can be installed in pairs on the underside of gratings with depths of 3" or more, when specified. These additionalbars provide extra load distribution and lateral stability to the carryingmembers. For short spans, one set located at mid-point. For greaterspans, two or three pairs depending upon spacing of supports.Where gratings are subjected to extremely heavy loading conditions, or rolling loads at 90 degrees to bearing bars, further assurance of satisfactory performance can be obtained by trim banding the ends ofpanels. Such band bars are usually 1/4" thick and 1/2" less than thedepth of the grating and welded flush with the top of the grating.Banding must be specified.

ALUMINUM GRATING LOAD TABLESpan 1-3/16" BEARING BAR CENTERS

SERIES: GAL, GAL-2, GIA, GIA-2, SFT, SFT-2, GAA & GBB

Caution: When designing with serratedgrating these loads should be reducedby the factors called out for serrated.

Theoretical values based on f = 12,000 psi, E = 10,000,000 psi, gross section

of bearing bar.U = safe uniform load, lb./sq. ft.D = deflection in inchesC = safe concentrated load, lb./ft.

of grating width at mid span

Note: The carrying capacity of a piece of grating subjected to a concentrated load over only a portion of its width is determined by the stiffness of both the bearing bars& the cross bars, and therefore varies with the type of grating used. To determine carrying capacity of gratings subject to such loadings, please call us for information.

Nosings for Stair Treads and Landings - Stair treads and landing are produced by attaching a 2" deep nosing to the leading edge. Thisgives added strength and rigidity to the area that takes impact and abuse. In addition, the nosing provides more surface area for skid resistance,

wear and better visibility. Gray stair treads with yellow nosing are available at additional cost.

To determine the maximum deflection for the limited allowable load, divide the deflection coefficient by the plate thickness. EXAMPLE: Deflection for a 1/2" thick plate, 3'-0" span, at 593 lbs. per sq. foot = 0.149 (deflection coefficient) ÷ 0.50" (platethickness) = .298". GRIP STRUT® 5-DIAMOND PLANK (11-3/4" WIDTH) LOAD TABLE

©2009 We sell all grating in all material types! 1-800-237-3820

Load Table Explanation

UNIFORM LOAD (U) appli-cation to all grating:Maximum load(lb/ft2) per-mitted by flexural stress inside rail or grating strut, whichever is lower, appliedto entire grating area (full-width by clear-span)between supports.

CONCENTRATED LOAD(C) application to all walkways/planks:Maximum load(lb) permittedby flexural stress in side railor grating strut, whicheveris lower, applied transverse-ly to total width of grating atmid-span and assumed tobe carried equally by bothside rails.

CONCENTRATED LOAD(CS) application to gratingsurface struts of all walk-ways/planks: Maximumload (lb/ft) permitted by flex-ural stress in grating strut, applied longitudinally to a1-ft. length of grating atmidwidth.

The following informationrefers to Regular GRIP STRUT®Safety Grating hereinafterreferred to as “grating”.HOW TO READ LOAD TABLESTo select size of grating, deter-mine load, clear span and deflec-tion requirements. Hav ing thisinformation, select from theappropriate load tables to find theappropriate plank to meet jobrequirements.FOR EXAMPLE: If you require aclear span of 4'0", concentratedload of 300# at .025" maximumdeflection and have chosen regu-lar GRIP STRUT®, you wouldverify the following:8-Diamond GRIP STRUT® 18-3/4" wide, 2-1/2" height, 12gauge steel will carry a load of416# at a 0.18" deflection. Thisis one size to do the job. Othersizes will carry more load if nec-essary. For more economicalselection, choose the greatestwidth that will support the loadconsistent with the job require-ments and choose deeper chan-nels rather than heavier steelgauges.Grating will generally carry simi-lar concentrated loads, tabulatedin pounds at mid-span, for agiven span, material gauge andheight, regardless of width. Theuniform load tables are tabulatedin lb./sq. ft., which accounts forthe difference in load capacityshown for various widths.Deflection is in inches. To ensure the safety of the tabu-lated loads, two aspects of grat-ing strength must be considered. The first consideration is trans-verse bending in the grating sur-face, which is referred to as “strutflexure.” This occurs when thegrating is loaded with either auniform load or a mid-width con-centrated load, and the “struts”(grating surface) deflect relativeto the side channels. To deter-

mine the allowable strut loads, samples of each plank materialand thickness were tested foreach plank width. (see Fig. 3).The data resulting from thesetests was used to prepare “strutloading” tables for regular GRIPSTRUT® which give allowableloads and deflections consideringstrut flexure only. These allow-able strut and rung loads havebeen incorporated in the ProductSelection Design Tables. The second aspect of the gratingstrength is channel flexure. Thisoccurs when the channels at mid-span of the grating deflect rela-tive to support points. To verifythe performance of the sidechannels, samples were loadedwith concentrated and uniformloads at different spans. Toapproximate the most severecondition, there were no attach-ments between the channels andthe supports. In cases wherespans are shorter, channelsdeeper and grating wider, strutflexure becomes more critical. With the exception of 8- and 10-Diamond regular GRIP STRUT®,it can be assumed that both sidechannels effectively support theconcentrated load, and the grat-ing surface deflection is negligi-ble. Based upon these assump-tions, the following values foundin the load table have been deter-mined:If grating surface deflectionshould be considered whenselecting a product to meet a par-ticular specification, then thedeflection of the mid-width of thegrating, relative to the side chan-nels, can be calculated usingboth the data in the Strut LoadingTables and the Load/DeflectionConversion formula. All loadtables show maximum loads, based upon actual load tests.

DEFLECTION (D) in all walk-ways/planks: Deflection (in) corre-sponding to maximum load (U) or(C) permitted by flexural stress inside rail or grating strut, whicheveris lower, applied as defined inFigs. 1 or 2, and 3.

STRUT DEFLECTION (DS) in allwalkways/planks: Deflection (in)corresponding to maximum con-centrated strut load (Cs), permittedby flexural stress in grating surfacestrut, applied longitudinally to a 1-ft. length of grating at midwidth.
