Staff Testimonials / Working @ McVeigh

“I feel working at McVeigh’s allows employees to reach their potential whilst managing a healthy work life balance. The integrated design culture makes for a well rounded skill-set across all disciplines and I believe this to a competitive advantage for McVeigh’s. The workload over the past 3 years since I began employment has been consistently steady and at times busy, however the management of resources has allowed the team to achieve project deadlines whilst maintaining high quality and innovative deliverables.” Brock Buckley, Graduate Structural Engineer and Structural BIM Manager, joined Aug 2012

“I feel I have a great work life balance at McVeigh. We work hard but that is not at the expense of my personal time. One of our key values is ‘team’ which we stand by! I find that we work really well as a team at McVeigh and have a real sense of achievement when sitting back having a beer on Friday afternoon.” Mark Taylor, Architect, joined Nov 2008

“When people have asked me what it’s like to work at McVeigh, I tell them the story of my first day which I think says a lot about the workplace culture we enjoy. On my first day at McVeigh I turned up and before I’d sat down at a desk I was introduced to everyone in the office. When I did sit down it was at a desk and computer that was already setup for my working requirements. We then had a morning tea where I was again welcomed and got to chat with my new team. After what could have been a nervous day, there was a bottle of wine waiting for me at home and a note from the boss again welcoming me to the team. My first day made me feel part of the team, and in return I was excited to make my contribution. Compare this to the other first day experiences you might have had and think about what this says about McVeigh’s culture.” Gregg Hoesman, Senior Structural Engineer, joined Aug 2013

“My McVeigh experience is working in a collaborative team to produce great projects for clients. The workload varies; during the busy weeks we work hard to hit our targets and during the quieter weeks we take some down time. Our project management tools allow us to map our projects, ensuring we have enough time to complete them – they also show us where we will be pushed for time and allow us to alert clients early on if we need to move deadlines.” Elise McDonald, Structural Engineer, joined Nov 2012

“At McVeigh’s I find work to be challenging but very rewarding. The workload can be tough at times, but as a Graduate Engineer, I know that there is a lot for me to learn and that this development does not happen easily.” David Crisp, Graduate Structural Engineer, joined June 2014

“At McVeigh’s I find work to be a rewarding challenge. Michael & Gordon are always available to ask questions to and provide guidance throughout the design and project management process. However, I am encouraged to work through issues, investigate solutions and confidently enact my decisions independently. Workload is typical of the industry and usually dependent on deadlines and client deliverables. However that being said we are much more able than most companies to set deadlines and help influence client decisions throughout the process, thus making our workflow more controllable. This is due to a strong emphasis placed on up front project planning and critical design issues so that concentrated effort is placed where is it most valuable and so that clients are informed about our design process.” Casey Shea, Senior Civil and Stormwater Engineer, joined Aug 2012

“The McVeigh story is unique in the Brisbane market and is a story about taking chances and crossing boundaries. The old barriers of architecture and engineering have well and truly consigned to the scrap heap and a new era of close participation is ushered in as the mantra for this small but robust practise. I like working at McVeigh because my architectural credibility now has the added grounding that comes from working hand in hand with civil and structural engineers; that most architects would consider invaluable but most clients consider the way of the future.” Paul Rice, Project Architect, joined Sept 2013

“As the newest member of the McVeigh team I have been overwhelmed with how welcoming, kind and warm the team have been towards me. It was made clear to me in the recruitment process by Michael McVeigh that he is extremely passionate about the team having a good work life balance and since joining the team I can honestly say this is very evident. Within my first week of starting as a Architectural Graduate I had a first site visit, client meeting, design presentation and a networking event in the form of a ping pong champions, under my belt and out of the office every evening on time. I am extremely excited to see what the future has in store for me at McVeigh Consultants.” Paula Whelan, Architectural Graduate, joined June 2015

“I’m so privileged to work directly with Michael McVeigh and to have the opportunity to be mentored by a successful business owner with over 27 years experience. Since I joined the McVeigh team the company values, Design, Team, Client and Performance, have been very clear and are the basis of all of our business strategies and decision making. There has always been strong emphasis on Team, and this is evidenced by the young, inspiring, vibrant and successful professionals that I am surrounded by on a daily basis. Whilst our work pipeline is healthy and our team is busy, it is not to the detriment of our personal lives and I have always been given the flexibility that I need to do what I need to do.” Kate Perry, Executive Assistant and Practice Manager, joined Nov 2009

“I have been working at McVeigh Consultants for the past 3 and a half years. At McVeigh’s we do work that we like and enjoy and fit in with our core values. Most of the time we have a steady workload flow due to our excellent marketing strategy we have in place. Sometimes a team member in a specific discipline might have a larger workload than some of the other team members – it is then the team leader that redirects resources to assist that team member to achieve the clients expectations and of course our own internal expectations/goals. With McVeigh being a multi-disciplined organisation (Structural, Architectural and Civil) there is a lot of internal communication and discussions that take place on a daily basis to achieve the desired outcomes for our projects and to meet our clients expectations.” Grant de Lange, Senior Civil Design Drafter, joined Feb 2012

“I’ve worked at McVeigh for 3 years. The work is challenging at times, but there is no limit of people that are eager to help or work collaboratively to find solutions to problems. The staff are extremely friendly and open which makes it so much more of an enjoyable work space. Team building and communication is always encouraged and events are organised to implement that. Management are supportive of staff and welcome and encourage feedback on their own performance.” Natalie Bower, Administrative Assistant and Receptionist, joined Dec 2012

Staff Testimonials / Working @ McVeigh

“I find the work I’m involved in at McVeigh’s to be of quite high profile and something to be proud of. The workload associated to such projects is significant but is drastically offset by the very social environment and staff functions. McVeigh always pride themselves on achieving the highest client satisfaction and is rewarded by the continual return business of their clients.” Ian Morrison, Structural Design Drafter, joined July 2013

“At McVeigh we use a system of detailed project plans to plan out “who needs to do what, by when”. This allows us to ensure that the best people are on the job and that they have sufficient support to undertake the work required to achieve the client outcomes and timeframes. We have weekly project meetings to review the program and deliverables for each project and to identify “critical issues” that may impact on the outcomes of the broader project. Using these tools we are able to identify issues early and manage the resources efficiently to prevent any “surprises”.” Gordon Kleynhans, Senior Associate Civil Engineer, joined Aug 2011

“At McVeigh’s I find work to be a fun, rewarding and exciting experience. The collaborative nature of the people working at McVeigh’s creates a great atmosphere to discuss issues and come up with some great solutions to problems. I am always pushed to question, challenge and really take ownership of what I do. My work mates are easy to talk to, helpful and really create an enjoyable work environment.Workload is manageable. All jobs have their challenges, something that we that we really focus on at McVeigh’s is managing our clients expectations. When done right I find this allows for stress free work where jobs can be completed on time and to budget. Creating a happy client and a satisfied and proud employee.” Jacob McVeigh, Graduate Civil Engineer, joined Dec 2013

“At McVeigh’s I find work to be satisfying, inspiring and provides development opportunities. Senior staff manage workload well. Staff are happy and motivated.” Sandra Atkinson, Structural Engineer, joined Jan 2015

“McVeigh is a great place to work, our integrated approach to design has created a strong team bond that has flowed over into both socially and team sporting activities. We have a continued emphasis on innovation and the effective use of project/time management tools to help maintain our life/work balance. I find the work to be both challenging and rewarding and have a great sense of pride in the service we deliver.” Adam Segrave, Graduate Structural Engineer, joined Dec 2012

“McVeigh is a great place to work and you can go wherever you want to. Workload is what you make it, we work for good clients that we choose. We use the client’s ‘success factors’ to lead us in the right direction. Projects are very interesting and the progression and development of how we do our work is ever evolving. I would say to a potential employee; “come with us on the journey”. Matthew Irwin, Senior Associate Structural Engineer, joined Sept 2011

“Over the past 10.5 years I have found working at McVeigh’s to be extremely rewarding given the abundance of opportunity for self-development that has been afforded to me. I have been running my own team with complete freedom on decisions of the type of work I chase, leadership style I use, and innovations with documentation, so long as I adhere to the 4 company values of Design, Team, Client and Performance. I am a team leader with a lot of responsibility and accountability, yet I arrive at 8am every day and leave to go to my “third space”, the local gym, at 5.30pm every day.” Vince Williams, Senior Associate Structural Engineer, joined Jan 2005

“I have worked at McVeigh’s now for 5 years starting as an Architectural Intern and progressing through to an Architectural Graduate. I find the work at McVeigh’s to continually encourage growth in my career. I have been encouraged to continually take on more challenging work that has allowed me to become as involved as I wanted to be on a broad range of projects and, realistically experience everyday challenges you face in the Construction Industry. Workload is openly discussed on a weekly basis to ensure that you have the support you need to complete tasks and meet deadlines. With every business, there are busy times where overtime on projects is required to meet project deadlines. This is again openly discussed with team leaders and Michael McVeigh, if the project timeline calls for it staff members propose what hours they believe they can manage with project deadlines in mind and overtime to do carry out the work is approved. My experience with McVeigh’s has always been positive. In terms of work life balance everyone participates in Friday drinks, inter-office ping pong championships and networking opportunities occurring regularly, there is an open line of communication with Management and my contribution to the McVeigh team always feels valued.” Jessica Ellis, Architectural Graduate, joined Aug 2010
