Single Unit Support for W-CDMA/HSDPA and GSM/GPRSChipset and Mobile Device Protocol and Application Testing

The MD8480C is a Base Station Simulator for testing 3.5G W-CDMA mobile phone stationswith High Speed Download Packet Access (HSDPA) functions. It has an air interface conforming to 3GPP specifications, and permits a full range of application tests. Capabilitiesinclude testing chipset and mobile station coding/decoding processing, voice and packet communications, and MS-to-MS testing (requires two MD8480C units). MD8480C protocol sequence tests include position registration, origination/termination, handover (option),and disconnection from a mobile station/network.Moreover, by adding optional functions for GSM/GPRS, handover tests between W-CDMA andGSM/GPRS can be performed. The MD8480C is ideal for developing UMTS mobile UE supporting global services, as well as for evaluating high-function application software formobile stations that support HSDPA.

: Single Unit Support for Development of3G/3.5G Mobile Stations

With its MU848060B TDMA option, the MD8480C supports W-CDMA and GSM/GPRS services as well as HSDPA in asingle unit. This support for handover tests within and betweensystems permits efficient development of UMTS mobile UE byeliminating the need for a BTS simulator in each system. As a result, low-cost space-saving test environments can beconfigured.

: Cuts New Project Development RisksBy supporting test development using the C language, theMD8480C enables creation of test scenarios that supportexpanded services. It also allows backward compatibility withscenarios created for the earlier MD8480A/B, and helpsdecrease risks from the changed development environment. The MD8480C's fast development environment also helps minimize project development risks, and upgrading fromMD8480A/B to MD8480C is possible.

Valuable Analysis Functions and Excellent Operability

: Trace ScreenThe test results for the sequence described by the test sce-nario are displayed on the trace screen shown at the rightusing the accessory MD8480C control software.Message capture — including the base station number, primitive details, and Layer-3 message data — between thesimulator and mobile station can be confirmed. If the actualresults are saved to a log file, post-testing failure analysis canbe performed by displaying the traces associated with thesaved logs.

: Measure ScreenThe MD8480C control software (a standard accessory) has abuilt-in Measure screen as shown on the right. It provides counter functions including send data throughputfrom the simulator side, ACK/NACK returned from the mobilestations, and CQI (Channel Quality Indicator).Simulator and mobile station operation can be confirmed quicklyand fault analysis can be performed simply using the data com-munications test.

Control PC

W-CDMA mobile terminal protocol sequence tests can be performed by setting up the equipment as shown in the diagram below to run tests includ-ing broadcast transmission, location, registration, mobile station origination / network, dis-connection from the mobile station/ network , and handover (option).Furthermore, any parameters and sequences used by the protocol sequence tests canbe defined, permitting variations such as quasi-normal test and SMS test. In addition, data transfer between the mobile station and MD8480C can be monitored simultaneously.Using these advanced functions makes troubleshooting more effective and mobile stationprotocol sequence testing more efficient.

Application Tests

: Voice and Data communication TestsThe MD8480C can perform a variety of application tests.

AMR Voice TestWhen a handset (standard accessory) is connected to the MD8480C, voice calls with the mobile station can be tested.

IP Packet TestWhen a PC is connected (10/100BASE-T) to the MD8480C, IP protocol data communication testing can be performed.

PPP Packet Test (Option)When a PC is connected (RS-232C) to the MD8480C, PPP protocol data communication testing can be performed.PPP is the protocol used when connecting via dial-up.

PPP (built-in server) TestFor additional PPP testing, the PPP protocol stack is built into the MD8480C so the PPP protocol can be terminated in theMD8480C.High-speed communications between the PC and MD8480C is possible using Ethernet (14 Mbps downlink and 384 kbps uplink).

MS-to-MS Test

: MS-to-MS and Other Tests User Data Test

Any data can be inserted to the send DTCH and demodulated DTCH data can be captured externally. This permits tests such as error rate measurement.

Video Call Test (Option)When a video call using the ISDN interface is connected to the MD8480C, audio and video communications tests can be performed between the mobile station and an external video terminal.

MS-to-MS TestWhen two MD8480C units are connected by 10BASE-T/100BASE-TX, end-to-end UE testing between two mobile stations is supported.

7

Coding and Decoding Function Tests

W-CDMA mobile station coding and decoding functions can betested using the setup shown in the diagram below. In the coding test, fixed and variable data (such as PN9) outputfrom the W-CDMA mobile station coding unit is compared withthe decoding results shown on the Trace screen. In addition, simultaneous BLER and BER measurements aresupported (BER tests require an external BER counter) andreceived signal timing errors can be displayed. In the decoding test, MD8480C fixed and variable W-CDMAdata (such as PN9) is output for comparison with the mobilestation decoding results.

: Coding/Decoding Setup (2)The setup shown on the right can monitor the MD8480C downlink output constellation (QPSK/16QAM) and power control condition, using the MS8609A Digital Mobile Radio Transmitter Tester to configure a fading simulator. This also enables visually checking variousmobile station operations in a dynamic environment, such as CQI notification to base station.
