This summer in youth life groups we have been reading and learning about the Sermon on the

Mount. We often hear about the Beatitudes and are encouraged to be the “salt of the earth,” but sometimes we don’t think about how we should actually apply these concepts to our insanely busy, sometimes messy, everyday lives. With the preaching of The Sermon on the Mount, Jesus affirms that these people were blessed because of their personal troubles and hardships – something that is pretty amazing to comprehend.

In order to help us look at the Sermon on the Mount from a more modern perspective, we’ve been reading “The Cotton Patch Gospel,” along with our Bibles. “The Cotton Patch Gospel” is translation of some of the New Testament by Clarence Jordan. It puts the Sermon on the Mount into contemporary language and has been interesting to read alongside our traditional translations. Clarence Jordan’s “Cotton Patch Gospel” is set in the context of his farming community, commonly known as Koinonia Farms. Koinonia was a place where black and white people worked, studied, worshiped, and lived together. This is truly remarkable considering this was during the height of the Civil Rights Movement. We’ve used Jordan’s humility, steadfastness to God, and courage to be different as an example of living out what Jesus asks us to do.

We’ve talked about salt, about chewing on the gospel, and in the next few weeks we’ll continue talk about light, prayer, and how to apply all of these concepts to our everyday lives as young people in the 21st century. It’s so easy to be spiritually recharged after something like a retreat or camp, and our goal is to try and remain spiritually recharged every single day through simply living out what Jesus calls us to do. He calls us to be different. He calls us to live life at a higher standard. He calls us to be complete, through Him. Be with our youth life groups in prayer as we try to be salt and light to others in the world. Whether it’s the summer or school year, God wants to see our influence on people around us through our actions and through the way we live our lives. Help us to spread God’s message of hope and continue to be “salty.”

This summer, several of the female persuasion decided we needed

some 'ladies only' events at church. Our first event was in June at Newk’s. It was so fun to have ladies as young as 21 and as old as 86 at the same table all at once. We talked about our summer plans and our lives. Also in June, we had a game night in the Fellowship Hall at church. Amber Stark brought traditional games to play Alexis Carlsson planned the most fun murder mystery for the end of party! Ladies searched for clues all over the church

in hopes to solve the murder. It was a blast. I have really enjoyed getting

to know some of the women from Calvary in different settings.

On September 13th at 9am, the ladies are invited to come to join Mary Alice and me for coffee and to learn about jewelry made by artisans in impoverished countries. We can try on jewelry and get to know

each other better. Check the Tower or worship folder in the upcoming months for more ways to connect with other women from our church.
