Mean is the average of a set of data. To calculate the mean, find the sum of the data and then divide by the number of data.
12, 15, 11, 11, 7, 12
12 + 15 +11 + 11 + 7 + 13 = 68
68 / 6 = 12
First, find the sum of the data.
Then divide by the number of data.
The mean is 12
Mean
You can remember that “mean” means
to average because the
“mean teacher averages your
grade.”
What is the median? The middle number in the set of data when written “in order” (first step we do)Given: 14, 28, 0, 1, 1
Reorder from least to greatest
0, 1, 1, 14, 28
The middle number is 1
What if you have an even set of numbers?Given: 10, 0, 20, 30
Reorder from least to greatest
0, 10, 20, 30 Add the two middle numbers together.
Divide by 2. What is your median?1
5

Mode
Mode: the number that appears the most often.
A family has children aged 3, 4, 5, 3, 1.
3 appears twice, the other numbers only once.
3 is the mode.
1, 1, 2, 2, 3, 3, 4, 4
There is NO mode
What is the mode?
Yes, there are two modes.
What are they?
2 and 4
1, 2, 2, 2, 3, 3, 4, 4, 4
Can there be more than one mode?
You can remember that mode means the number that occurs the most because “mode” and “most” sound alike!
Range – the difference between the greatest and the least value in a set of numbers.
1, 1, 3, 7, 10, 13
Range = 12
First put the numbers in order from smallest to greatest.40, 30, 43, 48, 26, 47,
and 50To find the range you would take the largest number, 50, and subtract the smallest number, 26.
55 – 26 = 29
Range = 29
