Kia orana, What a fantastic result achieved by our students at Totara Springs Sports Camp last week, I was privilege to attend and stay on Thursday evening and the children all played very well. Thank you to the parents who supported Whaea Olivia and our students over the week but a special thank you to Glenn for attending the whole week and Petrina for two nights. Measles As you may all be aware in the news over the weekend in regards to the measles outbreak which is a concern. This is a reminder to everyone to check that they and their children are fully immunised against measles. What is measles? Measles is a highly infectious viral disease that can be serious. It is spread from person to person through the air by breathing, sneezing or coughing. Just being in the same room as someone with measles can lead to infection if you are not immune. The first symptoms of measles are a fever, and one or more of a runny nose, cough and sore red eyes. After a few days a red blotchy rash comes on and lasts up to one week. The rash usually starts on the face and spreads to the rest of the body. Measles can be very serious. Who are at most at risk? People most at risk of contracting the disease are those who have not had the Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) vaccine, or who have just had one dose of the vaccine. People who are regarded as not immune to measles are: People born after 01 January 1969 who have not had two doses of the measles mumps- rubella (MMR) vaccine or have not had a laboratory confirmed positive measles result Children over four years old who have not received their second dose of MMR Infants under the age of 15 months who have not received their first routine dose of MMR vaccine. They are susceptible and rely on everyone else to be immune so that measles does not spread to them. What should you do? x Immunisation is the best way to prevent measles. x Ensure you are up to date with your immunisations. The vaccines are free for children and adults who have not previously received two doses of MMR. If you are not immune it is important to be aware of the symptoms of measles. The early symptoms of measles are fever, runny nose, sore red eyes and cough. If you develop symptoms of measles: If you do become unwell please phone your GP or call Healthline on 0800 611 116 for advice or seek medical attention depending on severity of illness. It is important to call first because measles is highly infectious, and people with measles can infect others in the waiting room. Stay at home and away from public places (such as sports events, gatherings, parties, school, work, child care, shopping centres, public transport and so on). See your doctor as soon as possible so a diagnosis can be confirmed. However, phone the surgery ahead to alert them of your symptoms and to allow them to make arrangements to assess you safely and without infecting other people. Unimmunised people who have had contact with a person with measles will normally be advised to stay at home and away from all public places, school or work for 14 days after their contact. Senior Class: Mrs Robinson, Whaea Emma & Matua Wayne Kia ora Koutou, Congratulations to the Totara Springs athletes who came away overall winners for 2019 and a big thank you to the parents who supported us while at camp. Thames Valley cross country runners will be running at South Farms in Ngatea on Wednesday. A notice will come home today, but children are expected to organise their own transport to and from the event please. Other reminders are that the children will be presenting speeches on Tuesday and Wednesday with finals being judged on Thursday. There will be no school on Friday due to teachers only day. Enjoy your week everyone. Ngaa Mihi nui - Olivia Robinson, Whaea Emma and Matua Wayne

Room 5 Mrs Donovan Last week Lindsay from Project Energize brought some helpers and Room Five was taught a new T ball game called Danish Rounders. I've put some videos up on Seesaw of the class learning the game if you haven't seen it yet. The class is underway with their kiwi inquiry, so encourage them to tell you what they find out. We are learning the names of fruit in Te Reo, so it would be helpful for them to have some in their lunchbox. Remember there is a teacher only day this Friday. Have a great week. Kind Regards, Angela Donovan

Room 4: Mr Bax This week we are beginning our upcycling projects to make new equipment for our outdoor play area. This is part of our topic study about recycling. We are continuing to learn and practise our new words in Te Reo. On Tuesday we are visiting the library to return and issue our books. Readers will be brought home throughout the week for students to practise their reading. Have a great week.

Room 3: Mrs Cameron It was lovely to get out in the garden this weekend and see the spring flowers beginning to bloom. The children said their speeches last week and they are up on Seesaw for you to view. It is not easy to get up in front of others but they all did really well. If you are bringing a goat, lamb or pet to Ag day next term you need to get your entries into the office this week. Have a great week.
