The intent of the pilot is to test the online system in your school, train staff on the online system, and to qualify your school for operational testing.

About MeCAS Online Science Tests
For operational testing, some students will require paper and pencil tests due to accommodations specified in their IEPs.
Schools testing online should test between 90-100% of their eligible students online. The use of paper and pencil tests will be viewed as an exception necessary to meet individual student needs only.
No paper and pencil tests will be administered during the pilot, so students requiring paper and pencil accommodations are not expected to test the pilot online.

Principals will be contacted for information regarding paper and pencil and online enrollments prior to operational testing.
Schools will be shipped an appropriate number of paper and pencil test materials based on these enrollments.

About MeCAS Online Science Tests
Test Coordinators will plan testing and provide you with a test schedule.
Operational online science testing must occur concurrently within your school for each session administered.
If you are testing students via both paper and pencil and online tests, all students should test the same sessions at the same times.
If you cannot test the full group of students at the same time, then you must take steps to maintain test security. Groups of students may not interact between administrations of the same test session.

About MeCAS Online Science Tests
Operational testing must occur within the test windows and must follow testing protocols and schedules contained in the Principal/Test Coordinator Manuals, Test Administrator Manual, and the MeCAS Online Science Administration Manual.
A separate MeCAS Online Science Administration Manual will be posted to iServices for each administration (one for the pilot and one for each operational test — grade 8 and high school).
Test Administrators and Technology Coordinators may print or copy these manuals as needed.
Principal/Test Coordinator Manuals and Test Administrator Manuals will be provided with paper and pencil shipments and are also available for download online at: http://www.maine.gov/education/mea/admininfo.htm.

Test Session Order and Time Allowances – Pilots
Additional time is provided for pilot testing as students are learning to use the testing tools.
The pilot tests for high school and grade 8 have one test session each and are intended to be practiced with the online system for both Test Administrators and students.
Paper and pencil tests will not be provided for the pilot.

Test Administrator Responsibilities
During the Test Windows but Prior to TestingUse your login account information, distributed by the Test Coordinator, to log into the Proctor Test Workstation (PTW) and the ‘Training Student’ accounts to practice on the Student Test Workstation (STW). Use the instructions for Starting the STW to access the secure Firefox Portable Kiosk on an MLTI student laptop.
Use the training information in the Student Training Module, the PTW/STW Interaction video and the Online Science Test Administration Manual to practice with both the proctor and student workstations.

Just Before Test AdministrationReceive the Student Login Tickets from the Test Coordinator.
Prepare the classroom for testing by removing or covering all instructional materials from the walls and ensuring that all students will have adequate work space.
Post a “TESTING – DO NOT DISTURB” sign on the door.
Confirm you have your PTW login information.
Confirm you have a copy of the administration and grade appropriate Online Test Administration Manual. The manual contains scripts that must be read to students during test administration.

Test Administrator Responsibilities
Begin Test AdministrationAllow students into the room.
Allow students to watch the Student Training Module (optional) and answer any questions. This video should be projected at the front of the room. It instructs students on the tools available to them during testing. This is video only; there is no audio.

Follow the instructions and scripts in the administration and grade appropriate Online Science Test Administration Manual to complete the following tasks:
Log into the Proctor Test Workstation (PTW). Distribute Student Login Tickets to students (do not use ‘Training
Student’ accounts to test students). Select the grade appropriate MeCAS Online Science Pilot or
MeCAS Online Science Test from the Test Selection screen. Locate the Test Access Code on the PTW ‘Test Administration’
screen and write it on the board. (A new Test Access Code will be generated each time a Test Administrator signs into a test from the Test Selection screen.)
Instruct students to log into the Student Test Workstation (STW) with the Username and Password located on their Student Login Tickets.
Instruct students to enter the Test Access Code on the STW ‘Select a Test’ screen.

Test Administrator Responsibilities
Once students have reviewed test directions pages and you have answered questions, on the PTW select ‘Session 1’ from the drop-down menu and click Go to allow students into the test session. Students will then be able to view and answer test questions.
Monitor students and assist with directions as needed. Test Administrators may not assist students with test questions.
Report any violations of test administration policy to the Test Coordinator, and report technology issues to the Technology Coordinator.

Test Administrator Responsibilities
Once all students have completed the questions in a session, they should continue to the ‘End of the Test’ or ‘End of the Session’ page by clicking on the Next button in the STW. When the student statuses on the PTW show ‘End of Test’ or ‘End of Session’ for all students, you will either:
End the Session/Test on the PTW by selecting ‘Close Test’ from the drop-down menu and clicking Go. Close Test is used to close a test session if students are testing individual sessions or when students have completed testing for the day.
or Continue to the next session on the PTW by selecting
‘Session 2’ from the drop-down menu and clicking Go. Once all sessions for that day’s testing are completed, end the test as indicated above.
NOTE: The grade 8 and high school pilots have one (1) session each; the high school operational test has three (3) sessions, and the grade 8 operational test has four (4) sessions.

Test Administrator Responsibilities
Instruct students to close their tests by clicking Complete (red Stop Sign button), and then Close (yellow Close button). As students close the test, their status on the PTW will be become blank.
Confirm all student computers are logged out of the test.
Close the test session in the PTW by clicking on End Session and OK.
Close the test in the PTW by clicking on Done from the Session Complete page.
Instruct students to log out of the STW.
Log out of the PTW.
Dismiss students.

It is possible to remove a single student from the test without ending the whole test session.Use of this option should be limited to situations such as:
Student falls ill during test, or other emergency. Laptop batteries need time to recharge prior to next
session.Click the arrow in the left-most “Remove Student” column beside the student’s name you would like to remove. Follow the on-screen instructions to finish the process.

Following Test AdministrationFor operational testing, report any students and sessions missed to your Test Coordinator, so those students can participate in make-up test sessions.
Utilize the MeCAS Online Science Pilot Items document to review the pilot test questions with students and answer any science related questions prior to operational testing.
NOTE: It is a violation of Test Administration policy to use operational, secure test items to train students for testing. Test Administrators may not use operational test questions for practice or review with students.

Training – Practice Proctoring
Training should include time for Test Administrators to practice logging into both the Proctor and Student Workstations.
‘Training Student’ accounts have been set up under your school so that Test Administrators can practice on the STW and learn how the STW and PTW interact.
The Student Training Module and PTW-STW Interaction video demonstrate the student experience and the interaction between Proctor and Student Workstations.

The Quick Start and Quick Reference Guides can also be used to facilitate Test Administrator training.
The Quick Start Guide contains a general overview of the components and an administration checklist for all roles during test administration.
The Quick Reference Guide is a step-by-step test administration guide for proctoring test administrations via the workstations.
NOTE: Test Administrators must use the Online Science Test Administration Manuals to administer the test during test administration because they contain important scripts and directions.

To ensure uniformity of test administration, Test Administrators must follow the directions and scripts in the Online Science Test Administration Manual during test administration.

One PTW must be open in each classroom during testing.
The PTW should be a wired (not wireless) machine during testing as disconnection or lapse in connection of the PTW will also disconnect students from the test.
The Test Administrator provides a Test Access Code to the students which allows them to log into the test. A new Test Access Code is generated each time a Test Administrator opens a test in the PTW.
