Measuring LENGTH
When we measure length we are
looking at how far away something is, how tall or short it
is, etc.
The are 2 groups/categories
for length….Customary
and Metric
Customary length is what we use in
the United States. It includes inches, feet, yards, and
miles.
One inch is about the size of a small paperclip. It is the smallest customary
measurement.
One foot is about the length of a
piece of notebook paper.
One yard is about the length of a
regular baseball bat.
One mile is about the length of a 20 minute walk. (7 times around the
bus ramp at PCE)
12 inches=1 foot
3 feet = 1 yard
36 inches=1 yard
Metric length is what most of the world uses. It includes
millimeters, centimeters, meters,
and kilometers
A millimeter is about as thick
as a dime.
A centimeter is about the width
of your index finger.
Your arm span from finger to finger tip is
about a meter.
A kilometer is more than a half a mile. (About 4 laps around bus ramp @ PCE)
