PASTOR’S CORNER
The Bell rings
What comes to your mind when you hear a bell ring? It
generally means a summoning or a time to convene. I want
you to think of bells ringing for different occasions.
First, not so long ago most churches had a bell tower and
someone was assigned to ring the bell about five minutes
before Sunday worship service began. Those assigned to ring
the bell were dedicated and alternated days to ring the bell
proudly. The ringing of the bell before church was very sacred
to me and I believed to others also. It was a double invitation:
first, for the Spirit of Christ to enter and second, for his servant
to come to worship. It was a special religious moment with
Jesus.
Another ringing of the bell is related to the farmers. I recalled
that in the 1960’s an old television show, “The Virginian”,
used the bell. They rang the bell at twelve (noon) for the hired
men to come to lunch. The meal was not that great but the
men consumed it quickly and returned to work. They were
very appreciative, showed respect, and seldom grumbled over
the food. It was during this same era that I was fully engaged
in farming. We did not have a bell that rang at twelve noon,
but another farmer in the neighborhood had a device to get our
attention from afar and it was called a horn. We lived in a
close-knit family community and we respected the device used
to stop us for a lunch break.
The final ringing of the bell I want to relate to generally
happens in August. It is the season for traditional school to
convene for all three general levels: elementary, middle, and
high school. Take a moment and reflect on each level. The
elementary students are so excited to be entering the
kindergartener’s room for the first time. I personally was

overwhelmed when I heard that bell sound and saw all the movements in the
hallway as we entered class for the first time. Those elementary students who
are moving up to the next grade are elated. The first day ringing of the bell
means a lot to middle school students. It sets the mood for the school year.
Then the ringing of the bell at the end of each class brings a new positive
opportunity because they can use past experiences and usher in new
ideas. When I think of the high schoolers, the ringing of the bell really is a
test. Why? Because a lot of high schoolers feel like they want to set their own
course in life.
The three examples of the bell ringing have a great influence in our
lives. Whether we are in a church waiting for worship to begin, working on a
farm at twelve noon, or starting school in August, the ringing bell is a call that
helps direct us. I believe that every time I hear a bell ring it reminds me that
something is about to happen and it gets my attention.
In conclusion, I am so proud that we have students in elementary, middle and
high school and teachers who teach them. As you begin a new year please
remember to listen to the bell and be directed by God daily. Have a great
school year!
Love,
Johnnie L. Wright, Pastor
Dear MC Family,
I will not be in Worship with you the first two
weeks in August, due to the fact I will be
having surgery on July 29th. My hope is to be
back in church with all of you by August 18th. I
will certainly miss all of you, and I ask that you
please keep me in your prayers as I recover.

He Hears Me When I Call...
I have come to really love two of my coworkers. Although at times we can all scream at the
nonsense that takes place in our office, we have bonded into a kind of sister-hood that is
able to just lift your spirits. After a long push towards an event recently held, we have been
able to enjoy a very low key day...one where we seem to be playing many rounds of
musical offices - both of them propped up in my extra chairs at various points, or we have
been hanging in the doorway of each other’s offices, or camped out on the floor of the
main office, polishing off the remaining snacks from the event. We have chatted, laughed
until we had tears streaming down our faces, and let out much needed steam from the
stress held within each of us.
"What's in a name?"...my coworkers and I spoke about how our names came to be, and the
funny stories that go with growing up with them. My mother and aunt will remember well,
how my mother had to take my birth certificate to my elementary school to prove the
name the school had for me on the classroom roll was indeed wrong - as I would come
home in tears telling my mother they once again called me Susan - mind you, this
happened at the start of each school year, 5 years in a row...or how I dropped my full name
in the 6th grade, having used both of my grandmother's names – my given name - because
a popular night time drama had a vivacious woman with the same name, and it became
something kids loved to pick on...or how now, those most close to me use my full name, for
they know and understand how dear it is to me.
Many years ago, the teachers knew not my name...many years ago, there was much effort
given to prove my name...many years ago, I did not answer, because I did not hear or
recognize that by which they called my name.
I am now grown, and my name defines me...my name is written on the most important roll,
just as it was given...and as I told my two cronies today, not only have I heard it called, but I
no longer have to prove a thing...because the Master teacher knows all about me, and
always hears me when I call...

Please join us for a church community picnic: Sunday August 25 at 11:30am.
The menu is open to what you each want to bring and share!
We would like to have folks willing to bring grills and cook hot-
dogs and hamburgers. With the summer heat, it would be great if
you have a tent canopy for sharing too.
We suggest potato salad, coleslaw, baked beans, chips, drinks,
ice pops, and watermelon—-what you like and bring some to
share!
We will be out on the lawn, so frisbees and corn toss, water
balloons and other games to do would be great!
Please let us know if you can bring a grill or tent in addition to your smile to share the fun!
