Vernon “ Rhythm Genie” Lewis passed October 28 2011, at age 57 from complications of Sarcoidosis.Vernon served on the MECDA Board of Directors, and as vendor coordinator for Cairo Carnivale. Vernon was a talented and diverse musician with a distinctive style seasoned with ardent passion for dancing, drumming, and all manner of music from around the world.

He rarely turned down an opportunity to play and donated his time and skill freely. He fervently promoted Middle Eastern drumming and dancing and was an endlessly patient instructor of percussion and senior computing. He was an eloquent and calm voiced MC for a variety of Bellydance events in Southern California. Many Cabaret, Tribal, and

Fusion Troupes in California will remember his calm reassuring words and eye contact when he improvised performances. Vernon and I host(ed), nurtured, and

facilitated Village Mandala Drum Circle in Claremont, Ca and presently in Montclair, Ca since 2000. In addition to many

other instruments Vernon played doumbek, djembe, congas, bongos, Klong Yao, marimbas, timbales, talking

drum, udu, piano, and traditional American drums. An unforgettable radiant and dazzling smile,

hearty and robust laugh, kind and gentle manners belonged to Vernon, as well as broad musical

interests promoting dance, learning, and art. Vernon was gregarious and always interested in other people. He was my beloved heart and soulmate and I am graciously accompanied by family : son GJ and sister Kim, music and Senior Computer students and Village Mandala

as well as a host of dancers, drummers and others who miss him intensely.

Mathew Rupnick “Matthew the silent” passed away on January 23, 2012 at the age of 68 after a six year battle with lung cancer.

Matt was devoted to helping others find a path to

personal growth and believed that music was an integral piece of that puzzle. He viewed music as a healing instrument and volunteered his time and music at the Veterans hospital and Relay for Life events and was actively involved with the Remo

Drum center drum circle, Village Mandala drum circle and Zorthian’s ranch. Matt began drumming with the

belly dance community in the 1980’s and was a core drummer for Village Mandala, he was also a phenomenal

guitarist and loved playing the harmonica; he took pride and joy in his self produced album “Moon Runner”.

Matt’s bold spirit, friendly smile and persuasive personality

will be missed by the many lives that he touched- Andy Kister
