ABSTRACT

The in s ta l la t io n o f a th ird generating u n it and a l l associated equipment in the F o rt Peck Power P lan t a t F o rt Peck Dam, F o rt Peck, Montana, presented a number of unusual e rec tio n problems and necessitated immediate and c o rrec t so lu tions to insure the proper in s ta l la t io n o f the heavy hydroelectric equipment,

A sa tis fa c to ry C onstruction Progress Schedule, taking in to cons id e ra tio n a l l possib le reasons fo r delay , had f i r s t to be prepared to insure th a t the work was completed in the a llo t te d tim e. When the ac tual e rec tio n of the penstock was s ta r te d , d i f f ic u l t ie s were encountered in obtaining " tig h t" r iv e ts . I t was necessary also to analyse the penstocK s tre sse s to determine the b e s t jo in t fo r the closure sec tion .

The placement o f the immense 82 ton b u tte r f ly valve was accomplished a f te r considerable planning. Turbine e rec tio n problems included the proper alignment of the curb rin g , the speed ring arxi the sh a f t .

The assembly of the ro to r lam inations, the in s ta l la t io n of the keys, the assembly o f the th ru s t c o lla r assembly on the drive sh a f t, and the assembly o f the ro to r on the th ru s t c o lla r a l l p resen t problems th a t had to be s a t is fa c to r i ly solved during the process o f the assembly and erectio n of the generator.

When the work was completed an overspeed and tu rb ine e ffic iency t e s t was performed. The sa tis fa c to ry re s u lts obtained in d ica te th a t tho erectio n problems encountered were solved s a t is f a c to r i ly .
