Key messages

ll General Dynamics has produced, delivered and supports more 8x8 infantry vehicles than any other existing western defence company

ll General Dynamics won the FRES Utility Vehicle (UV) programme with PIRANHA, beating Boxer and VBCI after an extensive evaluation

ll All our products can meet CGS’s 2020 schedule in support of ‘Strike’, with a contract award in 2017

ll There are a range of sole source acquisition approaches for a General Dynamics MIV via Direct Commercial Sale (DCS), US Foreign Military Sales (FMS) or the Canadian Commercial Corporation (CCC)

ll General Dynamics can offer budgetary certainty with a fixed-firm price for support for all its platforms because of its long history

ll A General Dynamics MIV solution would be lowest risk in aligning AJAX, MIV, ‘Evolve to Open’ and ‘MORPHEUS’ in support of ‘Strike’

ll General Dynamics will maximise manufacturing and in-service support in the UK, securing long-term jobs and skills

PIRANHA 5

PIRANHA 5 was selected for FRES UV in 2009: the genesis of the UK’s Mechanised Infantry Vehicle (MIV) programme.

PIRANHA 5 is an exceptionally mobile and flexible platform with a very high free payload enabling high levels of add-on ballistic protection and significant growth throughout its life. At 33t GVW, the PIRANHA 5 has superior mobility through fourth axle steering, a versatile economic driveline, hydro-pneumatic suspension and large 16R20 tyres.

In addition to the very high level of IED, mine and ballistic protection, the PIRANHA 5 provides the soldiers with a spacious, flexible and comfortable interior for up to 12 soldiers.

PIRANHA 5 has been chosen by Denmark to form the backbone of the Danish Army with deliveries starting in late 2017. PIRANHA 5 has also been selected by Spain for the modernisation of the Armed Forces.

Stryker DVH

The Stryker Double-V Hull (DVH) is a modernised version of the combat-proven Stryker family of 8x8 vehicles that will be in-service with the US Army in 2017. The Stryker DVH encapsulates survivability lessons learnt from operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The latest ‘ECP’ configuration also offers enhanced suspension and driveline for improved soft-soil mobility at 28.6T GVW, a new power pack, enhanced electrical power systems, digital backbone and an open architecture to support the digital battlefield of tomorrow.

General Dynamics Land Systems has an active Stryker production line with no production capacity constraints for the numbers and timescales being requested by the UK.

Use of the Stryker supply base will provide economies of scale to the UK MIV programme in capital costs and through-life support, together with high levels of interoperability with major UK allies who operate LAV (US Army, Canada, New Zealand).
