WHAT IS A GREENWAY?Greenways are corridors of protected open space managed for conservation and recreation purposes. Greenways often follow natural land or water features and link parks, nature preserves, cultural features and historic sites with each other and with populated areas. Greenways can be publicly or privately owned and some are the results of public/private partnerships.

County Standard is a 10’ wide asphalt trail conforming to AASHTO and ADA for recreational trails.

LAND ACQUISITION PROCESS
County receives a written request from the land owner to proceed.
County hires a surveyor to prepare a plat of the property to be transferred.
County has property appraised based on survey. County attorney prepared legal documents and
provides the plat for review by the land owner.
GREENWAYS AND SAFETY
Greenway trails have had the fewest issues among Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation amenities.
A 2004 study by UNC Charlotte on our greenways found that greenways do not increase crime and, in some instances, crime is slightly reduced.

GREENWAYS AND SAFETY
Common sense prevails-if you have valuables in your car, locate them out of sight and lock the vehicle. Avoid the trail during floods. Enjoy walking with a friend.
