Learning Objectives• Become a Google expert• Identify other available online resources
– Databases & Collections– General Websites
• Assess, evaluate and use what you find!• The 21st Century Library• Web 2.0
– What is it?– How and when to use it, and for
what?
44
Let’s talk about
How many of you use Google? Is it your first choice? If not, what
is?
55
Extreme Googling
Go
What do you use to narrow or focus your search?
66
77
Narrowing/Widening your Google Search
• Try using an “exact phrase”• Use OR to widen your search • Ask Google to
– Omit (-) a word/phrase – Search a certain language or file
format– Narrow to a period of time – Search specific domain types (i.e. .org)
88
Why use quotations?• Remember… In basic search, you can specify
when you want exact phrases to be searched by putting quotes around your sentence/phrase.
• (i.e. “West Virginia”) Without quotes you could get results like this: The sun was setting in the west and my wife, Virginia, was by my side.

Evaluating Websites
Authoritativeness
The quality of possessing authority.
The quality of trustworthiness and reliability.
Guidelines to determine website authoritativeness:
• Who’s the sponsor? Provide insight on the credibility of information published on the site.
• How current is it? Should be updated frequently; as health information changes constantly.
• Opinion? Or facts? If facts, can be verified from a primary information source.
• Target audience? Should clearly state whether the information is intended for the consumer or the health professional
• Official site? Blog?

What is Web 2.0?• Web 2.0 is the term used to describe the trend in
the use of World Wide Web to enhance creativity, information sharing, and, most notably, collaboration among users.
• These concepts have led to the development and evolution of web-based communities and hosted services; such as social-networking sites, wikis, blogs, and tagging/indexing.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_2
25
We have gone from passive to active communication and sharing!
“In 2006, Time magazine chose the millions of anonymous
contributors of user-generated content to Wikipedia, YouTube,
MySpace, Facebook, Second Life, the Linux operating system, and other providers, as Person of the
Year, personified simply as You.” - Lev Grossman
26
Social networking • Idea: access/create a “community” for school,
work, family, or friends.
• Goal: to connect people with similar needs and interests for the good of all involved.
• Options: temporary or permanent, invite only or open, professional (Linkedin) or social (Facebook), etc…
27
What is a blog?
• “Blog is short for weblog. A weblog is a journal (or newsletter) that is frequently updated and intended for general public consumption.” www.bytowninternet.com/glossary
• To learn more about and create your own blog, start here at Blogger: http://www.blogger.com/tour_start.g
28
One example
A blog for you…
• Login: medstart08• Password: Wildcat!
30
What is a Wiki?• A wiki is a collection of web pages designed
to enable anyone who accesses it to contribute or modify content.
• Wikis are often used to create collaborative websites and to power community websites.
• The collaborative encyclopedia, Wikipedia, is one of the best-known wikis.
A few more tips…• Use RSS feeds to monitor blogs, news,
etc…• Google Documents
– write and edit collaboratively
• Google Health – store/organize health information/records online
• Social Bookmarking: – http://del.icio.us– http://digg.com
1. Use authoritative websites to find quality health information!
2. If you use Google, use Advanced search or Google Scholar to narrow/widen your scope.
3. Remember that .gov, .edu, and .org sites are good indicators of the quality and reliability of website content.
4. Also look for these areas on all websites: an “About” page, a “last updated” date, a list of sponsors/authors/advisors, and a statement of purpose.
5. You can use Google to find images or videos about topics as well as written information. Don’t forget to cite what you use.
