MedaPhor’s revolutionary ScanTrainer simulator teaches doctors and sonographers complex, hard-to-learn ultrasound scanning skills, without the need for patients and with minimal expert supervision.

Our unique range of self-learning ultrasound training simulators replicates having an expert guiding your learning. ScanTrainer combines ‘real-feel’ virtual reality simulation with real patient scans, real-time expert guidance and feedback and curriculum-based interactive learning and assessment. As such, ScanTrainer provides fast and effective ultrasound training for hospitals and university training centres.

REAL SAVINGSScanTrainer helps relieve the pressure on

trainers and equipment by expediting skills acquisition and increasing trainees’ competency

prior to hands-on patient contact. A recent study(1) shows that practical skills training

using simulation can save costs compared with a traditional approach to training using live

scanning lists. Simulation saves tutor time – less expert supervision is required in the

early stages - and clinical equipment can be released to meet clinical service delivery targets.

REAL FEEDBACK The Learning Management System built into every ScanTrainer provides detailed task-by-task feedback to trainees. Each

task attempted is compared against expert data. Trainee results are displayed on a results review screen, with detailed feedback explaining the reason for pass

or failure.

REAL FEEL Transvaginal and

transabdominal scanning are realistically replicated

using haptic feedback devices that simulate different patient types

and positions.

REAL EXPERT GUIDANCEOur stunning new real-time ScanTutor expert guidance, literally guides the trainee as though an expert was

standing by their side explaining how to scan.

“ScanTrainer is an unparalleled ultrasound skills-based simulator

that enables standardised and objective practical assessment

at every level of skills competency”

REAL SCANS Realism is the key to the

perfect learning experience, so all our ScanTrainer

ultrasound images are actual scans from real patients.

CONTROL PANELSimulated ultrasound

controls teach core image manipulation skills and

measurement functions.

CURRICULUM BASED STRUCTURED LEARNING

Step-by-step instructions guide users through an easy-to-follow

curriculum based, structured teaching programme.

VIRTUAL ANATOMY Detailed virtual anatomy

of an actual patient, specific to each scan,

helps trainees understand orientation and probe

manipulation.

PLATFORMS

*Future developments in the fields of needling, separate probe placement or simulation of moving body parts may require additional hardware.

TRANSABDOMINAL SIMULATOR

A unique floor-mounted haptic device, developed specifically for ScanTrainer, replaces the need for mannequins and provides a highly realistic abdominal scanning experience, replicating different patient and body part profiles.

A virtual patient is shown on the second display to help with probe placement. Teaching modules and Case Studies can then be added according to your speciality, without the need for further hardware*. Current specialities include Obstetrics, Gynaecology, General Medical and Emergency Medicine. Future modules such as MSK and paediatrics are planned for launch in 2014/15.

LEARNING RESOURCES

PRACTICE WITH AN EXPERTScanTrainer has two training modes:

‘Guided Practice’ mode allows trainees to watch and replicate an expert’s scanning skills by following an expert video of them performing the scan on screen as they scan:

‘Supported Practice’ mode, when selected the new ScanTutor ‘expert’ provides real-time, on-screen visual guidance whilst the trainee scans, guiding them through both basic and complex tasks:

In a perfect world, the gold standard for image acquisition learning would be for every trainee to get one to one expert teaching on multiple patients, who never complained and allowed unlimited practice. The expert would explain how to scan; show you how to image the patient and then allow you to learn on the patient.

As you scan, the expert would guide your probe position and orientation, whilst pointing out structures and landmarks on the ultrasound image as you progressed. Finally when you had practiced enough, you would be assessed and hopefully passed by the expert...

Welcome to ScanTutor, your trainee’s 24/7 expert tutor - available whenever you can’t be.

Finally, trainees are assessed in ‘Assessment’ mode. All expert guidance is deactivated and the trainees have an opportunity to scan unaided. Trainees are provided with feedback using ScanTrainer’s Learning Management System that passes/fails each task according to gold standard metrics.

ASSESSMENT

Correct positioning of the key ultrasound controls also shown with ’traffic light’ indicators.

Structures to be located are colour co-ordinated in the instructions and on the ultrasound image, helping trainees identify key structures in the early learning phase.

Correct probe position and orientation are shown using a traffic light display on the virtual patient.

On-screen spheres indicate correct positioning of callipers when measurements are being attempted.

MODULES

CORE SKILLS MODULESUsing a selection of normal patient scans, ScanTrainer’s core skills modules teach basic transvaginal and transabdominal ultrasound scanning skills. These include:

• Orientation and probe manipulation• Identification and imaging of normal structures• Making appropriate measurements

There is detailed feedback available for all assignments, and the structured learning process is completed with a timed final examination to test newly acquired skills.

ADVANCED SKILLS MODULESScanTrainer’s advanced skills modules teach more advanced skills and typical pathologies on a range of difficult cases using real patient scans. These skills include:

• Identification and imaging of difficult or abnormal structures

• Making appropriate measurements

As with Core Skills modules, there is detailed feedback available for all assignments.

CASE STUDY MODULESCase Studies present a library of both common and rare pathologies which more advanced trainees can use to help develop their image interpretation and differential diagnosis skills. These Case Studies may be used to create customised assessment modules - Tutors can easily add their own multiple choice questions and answers, allowing tailoring to specific levels of trainee and different training programmes.
