For most people, a 20-foot plot of grassnestled near Lake Pine may not seem like abig deal.

To Lake Pine Colony Club officials, it iscrucial to safety and maintenance of theirlake.

Medford Township is planning to grantan easement to the Lake Pine Colony Clubfor use of a 20-foot long area of township-owned land, allowing the club access to thelake.

The portion of property comes fromwhat was originally a 60-foot wide strip of land along Park Road near Lake Pine. In1996, the property was divided into three,20-foot sections. Two of those sections weregranted to neighboring property owners oneither side of the strip. Lake Pine ColonyClub officials thought the third portionwas their property.

It was misunderstood by the colonyclub, given there were neighboring proper-ties, that they own the center of that,

colony club president Laura Saunders said. That center was retained by the town-ship.

While the small piece of land doesntseem like a big deal to most, it is crucial formaintenance and safety along Lake Pine.

As the geese come and populate, wecant go onto private properties, Saunderssaid. So this gives us access to certainareas of our lake to keep it pristine.

Saunders said the colony club also needsaccess to the property in case of an emer-gency.

The Taunton Fire Department uses thefire lane opposite the lake for their prac-tice, she said. We would still need accessif there would ever be an emergency inthat area.

Mayor Chris Buoni said the colony clubcame to the township early in 2014 to ask if

it would vacate the property. The township had already had discus-

sions with Lake Pine of vacating a portion

of property that really has no public use,Buoni said. It serves a use for Lake Pine.Buoni said he has no issue with allowing

the colony club to use the property. Theclub has maintained it for a number of years, despite it being township-owned.

Since it is the townships, we thoughtitd be possible since were paying to main-tain it and use access, Saunders said.

One problem the township had with va-cating the property was it could not simplyhand the property over to the colony club.Township solicitor Chris Norman said thetownship must first offer the parcel toneighboring properties. Buoni noted a pri-vate homeowner could decide to purchasethe land and make the area of the lake in-accessible to the colony club.

Medford Township this year willbe progress with ordinancechanges for Route 70. Buoni saidcouncil could begin passing ordi-nances in line with the planningboard's Route 70 corridor study asearly as this month.

Were excited to implementthat because it will allow busi-nesses to be a little more appro-priate, Buoni said. I think the

planning board did a great job inhelping flesh that out. Some of the recommendations

the planning board made in itsstudy include increasing the max-imum size of businesses alongthe Route 70 corridor, allowingmore uses for businesses in thearea and relaxing buffer restric-tions to make businesses morevisible from the highway.

Council will be discussing theproposed changes in more detailin the coming months and canchoose to pass ordinances basedon the recommendations.

Buoni said the changes councildecides to make will be ones itfeels suits the community best.

Were just trying to findthings that fit in the context of our community, he sa id.

A number of new businessesmoved into Medford, particularlyMedford Village, in 2014. Buonisaid the economic growth was ex-citing to see, and he feels it will

continue into 2015.Weve had a number of busi -ness owners express interest intown, he said. I think weregoing to see appropriate growthfor the town.

Pinelands Branch LibraryThe future of Pinelands

Branch Library could come tolight in 2015 as the township and

Burlington County continue dis-cussions on the facility.

The county recently presentedsome concepts to council to helpmodernize what the county haspreviously called an outdated fa-cility.

What we need to take a look atis what the appropriate way to ap-proach it is, Buoni said. Impretty excited about that.

In 2013, freeholders and councilwere at odds over who should footthe bill for renovations to the fa-cility. Buoni said talks betweencouncil and the freeholders were

much more productive last yearthan they were previously.Council is hoping to present a

specific plan to the public beforethe end of 2015.

Improvements to Bende ParkMedford Township is hoping to

make improvements to BobBende Park with its submissionof an application for a $65,000

    Community Development BlockGrant.

If the township receives thegrant from the Burlington Coun-ty Office of Community Develop-ment, it plans to install new side-walks and parking lot cut curbs tomake the park handicapped-ac-cessible. Council authorized theapplication at its Dec. 2 meeting.

Were basically looking to usethat money to get Bende Field inbetter condition, Buoni said.

The CDBG grant is adminis-tered through Burlington County.Buoni said the county has been a

big help in the past with grants tofund improvements to parks. The county has been very

helpful with that, Buoni said. They make sure our parks areavailable to as many people aspossible.

Township manager positionMedford will continue its

search for a new township man-

ager in 2015. The position hasbeen vacant since the resignationof former township managerChris Schultz in August.

Buoni said council has re-ceived about 40 resumes for theposition and conducted inter-views throughout the fall.

Weve spent a lot of time in in-terviews, he said. We met somereally good people, but we haventmet the person who is right forMedford Township.

Buoni said council is not inany rush to fill the position, say-ing it will take its time to find the

right person. Township clerkKatherine Burger will continueas the acting township managerto begin the year.

Norman said granting an ease-ment would give the colony clubthe access it needs and preventprivate landowners from pur-chasing the land themselves.

It would effectively do thesame thing as the colony clubowning it, Norman said.

In addition to allowing thecolony club to continue to use and

maintain the property, the town-ship could also use it for any rea-son in the future.

Council is expected to pass aresolution making the easementofficial in the near future.

Resolution on easement to be passed in near future

ploring an ordinance to better de-fine deer netting in the context of its fence ordinances.

Last May, the topic of deer net-ting came to council after therewas some confusion among resi-dents as to whether deer nettingwas classified as a fence in town-ship ordinances.

    After much discussion, in the

fall, council authorized the cre-ation of a subcommittee to take acloser look at the issue.

Deer fencing was on a councilagenda in November, but it wastabled because the subcommitteehad a number of questions comeup about the existing ordinance.

Buoni, who is one of the mem-bers of the subcommittee, said itwill continue to study the topicearly in the year. There will likelybe some movement on the subjectin 2015, though Buoni said hedoesn't expect any action for atleast a few more months.
