“Huerta, with Cesar Chavez, advocated for the rights of farm workers and founded the United Farmworkers of America during the mid-1960s. Huerta helped lead the famous Delano grape strike of 1965. More than 5,000 San Joaquin Valley grape workers walked off their jobs to protest low wages. For more than 40 years, Huerta has been a tireless activist working to ensure that civil rights extend to the unemployed and the under-employed. In 1963 she fought to extend coverage of the Aid for Dependent Families Act to this group in California as well as for disability insurance for farm workers.”
